Strength:

Great mileage with the diesel. Road mileage with the gas should be good also. Fun to drive. Acceleration is excellant. Great around town. People always comment about seeing me around town. Popular with High School kids. Picture of our decorated Senior car will be in the yearbook.

Weakness:

Little hardware problems with 2000 Beetle. No real problems yet with 2006. 2000 Beetle had glow plug relay fail. Engine would not start. Dealer wanted $450. (relay and glow plugs), local guy was $150. Relay only. Dealer (Momentum in Houston) was more interested in their Audi sales so service was not very good. Local service much better. Avoid the dealers. They will replace everything rather than find/fix what's broke. 2000 Beetle had electric windows fail but warrantee covered it. Gas cap compartment door does not open. I have to force it but it is cheap enough that it can easily be popped open by hand. Vinyl seats wearing badly where my hips slide in on seat back. Leather in 2006 Beetle does not drag on my hips like the vinyl in the 2000 so the problem is less likely. Both cars: If you unlock the car with the key fob and you don't start the engine, then the car will automtically lock itself in about 30 seconds. Keep the key on your person at all times. The potential exists to get yourself locked out. Both cars have had problems with the cheap plastic splash guards under the engine. The low ground clearance does not allow these to last very long. You will hit the concrete parking logs(for lack of a better term) and curbs so you will have to mess with the splash guards until you rip them off the car.

I've got two now. 2000 Diesel Silver and 2006 gas Yellow. Lots of pep in both. Daughter drives old one to high school. Next year she will take the 2006 to college. Sunroof, 6 CD changer & XM radio will make the trips home more fun. I want my diesel back.
Diesel runs about 30-33mpg just back and forth 7 miles each way to work. Gas gets 20-22. If you want something to scoot around to/from work/school, these are both great. The Beetles are intended for that purpose.

Similar Products Used:

1987 Honda Civic, 1983 Honda Accord. Both very good but not as much fun.
My 1st car: 1972 Plymouth Duster. Almost as much fun as the Beetles.
1961 Beetle (college car) Last Beetle without a gas gage. 30 MPG all the time. Best car ever in snow. You could see my mid-life crisis coming.

power, cute and fun to drive.

Weakness:

brake switch (recalled), window clips (recalled) lamps burn out frequently. I wish they'd recall the whole car.

This car leaked a week after I got it. The trap on the moonroof was plugged. Window fell and wouldn't come up. Break lights would stay on after you turned the car off. These last two are recalls. But I have to say, Armstrong Buick took care of everything for nothing. Service great. Now the gas hatch won't open. I had to pry it open, cause it don't run without gas. The car runs great, its a turbo and it has alot of spunk. The engine purrs, but the body is crap. It belongs in a litter box. I hate to pawn it off on anyone else. It has 94000 miles on it. I can't believe vw would produce such quality, I'd be ashamed.

Weakness:

See description above

I've had this car since 2002 and it has been one thing after another. They really went cheep on the parts for this car. I have had to replace the break light switch 4 times in 3 years. Both window clips broke, my reverse gear just went out, one time I couldn't open the gas tank, the electrical system is a joke (watch out I've been locked out of my car 2 times). At random an interior button or switch will decide to go on strike. I would not recommend this car to anyone! While its fun to drive and looks cute, its a real lemon. In fact I'm trying to sell mine so if anyone is interested in a real POS I have one for ya

Volkswagen NewBeetle has more room than you think before you drive it. It's a smooth comfortable ride. The engine sounds great.

Weakness:

I would like to see it have more trunk space but it was decent. As I said before, I would like to know about repair costs and is it worth it when it is brand new and has a warranty? Anyone comment please?

I am seriously looking into buying a Volkwagon beetle and I test drove it and it was wonderful. I have a close friend who owns one, she bought it brand new, it's great. She's never had a problem. I will say I've read great reviews on the car. The only concern I have is when something does break down with it, i was told they are very expensive to fix, can anyone tell me if this is true?

I also would like to say that I went to Carmax and had HORRIBLE customer service, they wouldn't even let me test drive without first running my credit to see if I was preapproved. Where has anyone ever gone and they wouldn't allow a simple test drive?

Also... for the person who bought a NewBeetle from Carmax, your problem is Carmax, I've heard that from at least 5 friends of mine who went and purchased a car from them. I am refering to different models, such as a Jetta, Honda, Beetle, and another Honda. It's Carmax, don't believe a word about the inspection crap they advertise and what they call "customer service". Trust me... they suck.

where to begin. 2.0 engine has to work to hard with the manual 5 speed. 3k rpms at 60 Mph!
swtiches break easily...gas flapper, hatch not dependable.
Other people have had the car catch on fire. no ryme or reason.
People on the road do not respect New beetles. I have had quite a few people try to run me off the road in DFW. They dont respect this car at all.

I purchased the newbeetle from carmax back in 05’
It has been in and out of the shop so many times I cant remember.
The radio on the car stopped turning off when you removed the key and nobody could fix that.! It was a 5 speed manual and I was hitting 3000 rpms at 60 mph I always felt like I there should be a 6th gear.
Had lots of trouble with the hatch and the gas flapper not opening. The hatch would not close and I could never find a manual release for gas flapper….

In addition to that it just up and started with all these malfunctions one day and would not start. They had to replace some kind of funky relay I think #57.
I had the ac fan go out at 75k and the coolant fan on the radiator go bad around the same along with the external ac fan and switch. which after replacement were grinding pretty bad and had to go back.
One issue I had was Every time I hit a bump in the car I would hear a rattle. They say they replaced the struts and strut mounts but that never made the problem go away. It had been in the shop for this issue over 5 times! Besides other issues. Like the mirror control snapping off due to bad placement. Switches would sometime just up and break! I had to replace the gas switch and that cost $28 just for the switch. The warranty people would have put it in but I needed my car to drive to work so I didn’t want to get into a 50 dollar fee and wait 3 days just to replace a switch. So I did it myself. Which fixed it till it got real cold then the gas flapper stuck and they had to replace the lid. The gasket around the oil pan started leaking oil real bad so that had to be fixed at 78k miles.
I had a head light go out at 70 k and I had to put in the replacement.Well the bulb was cheap enough to buy but putting in the bulb was very complicated. Unlike most vehicles vw doesnt follow standard conventions. I had to dig up the instructions on the net because I didnt have an owners manual. I think its strange that it takes like 30 minutes to change a head lamp. NOw get this. To change the rear lamps you have to have something called a "bone tool" weird.

In the end I made up my mind that German was not the way to go. Im sticking with HONDA... dont buy this car unless you plan to rip out the engine and transmission and put in all honda parts.

My suggestion don’t buy this car!
I brought mine back to the dealer and got a Honda element.!
If anyone wants to contact me and ask me any other questions feel free to do so because these cars are not good.

I am a woman and the look of the car is very appealing to me...its seems very rounded and fem- cute daisy in the bud vase...I would like to buy one of these if I had the money to spare. and have a honda engine and transmission in it. then it would be cute and a good car.
The worst part is I got burned for a lot of money before I traded it in. they rolled $3,300 of my remaing balance back into the honda loan too. So ladies trust me dont buy this one. It is cute. But it is so no worth it.

Fast - and fun to drive (when you can)

Weakness:

Not dependable, no coat hook for hanging clothes, sun visors useless for keeping sun out of your eyes, can't get parts, poor gas mileage

What a nightmare. EPA says mileage is 37/42m (diesel - TDI) but the best I can do is 37mpg, and usually average around 35 - that only after 12 months of begging in Sptb to fix. The selling dealer in Greenville after keeping the car for several days found the thermostat was defective - and replaced it. Had to sent it back to Greenville on a wrecker when the car overheated due to losing Antifreeze. Now mileage is around 37-38 WHEN I GET TO DRIVE IT. Instrument cluster has been replaced twice. The first time had to send the vehicle to a dealer on a wrecker - because it wouldn't start. Had to wait for it to come in. The trunk lid has been so hard to close, I have bent the lip at the bottom of it. The stop light on the trunk was defective - had to replace it. Now (I haven't seen the car for about 10 days, the Driver's seat frame broke (no I'm no fatty - weigh about 190) the seat won't latch down - flies up every time you get out of the vehicle, banks down when you sit down. Dealer won't give a loaner - because he saays it is say to drive with a broken seat - so it sits at the dealer.
Also have had trouble with the alarm system - all related to the trunk lid - had to be adjusted several times. The latest round with the alarm now working - they say the radio had slidden into the dash too far and the sensors were not activated. (??????). The car has been towed to a dealer once because it wouldn't start, it has been held captive at a dealership for well over three weeks since new - and only one night did I get a loaner - and then only because they told me it was ready, and I had someone take me to Greenville and didn't have a ride home. Would I buy another Volkswagen - well - the dealer wants to trade with me for another, and is wanting me to take close to $6,000 less than I paid for it - against his list price. So much for holding it's value. To summarize - not dependable, not cost effective to operate - can drive a gas car for less than the diesel bug - quality is not there - and you lose too much when you go to sell.

Also - the engineers who designed this car probably never rode in it. The sun roof can't be used over 45 miles per hour, and there is no place to hang close when you go on a trip.

I can't complain about the dealer's because they have tried hard to fix the car, and have had to spend so much time trying to get it running right - I know they hate to see me come in. If I were to weaken and buy another Volkswagen, it would be because of the dealer - not because of the Brand

Where to start...THIS CAR HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE! I bought this car brand new from the dealership on Oct. 18, 2005(I live 4 hours away from the nearest dealership!) and within the first week, my top wouldn't work properly and my stereo system completely broke. After a freaking huge ordeal, they came and picked it up and fixed it. However, the top still malfunctions from time to time. Since then, I had to go up for a recall TWICE, my windows were malfunctioning-driver side won't always go in the top properly-leaked once from rain, the entire passenger side would go half way up and then back down if you were trying to put them up, so I made the appointment for 8:30 am, left my house at 4:30 am to get there on time, got there and they wouldn't give me a rental. So after walking around Greenville, NC for 6 hours, I went back and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong with them. They thought maybe they needed to be lubed, so they did that and then thought that would help. About 2 hours into my ride home, they malfunctioned once more. Then, my light in my visor quit working. Too irritated to deal with them again so soon, I didn't call right away. Then the day before Thanksgiving, my exhaust system fault light came on when I started it. I got maybe 1/16 of a mile down the road and it started shaking badly and smoking white smoke from the tale pipe. We had a bad storm that day and you couldn't get off the island so I couldn't have it towed. The next day being Thanksgiving, I still couldn't have it towed. So finally Friday, they towed it away. Here it is Monday afternoon, my 6th day with no car and they have still yet to tell me what is wrong with the car, and have not given me a rental. I called at 9am this morning and he said he'd call me back after he spoke with a technician. With no word, I called back at 1:15 and got no answer. I called yet again at 1:25 and was put on hold for 10 minutes just to be told he would call me back as soon as he talked to the service manager. It is currently 2:30 and I have no car, no word about my car or even a rental car, and no ride home from work. I pay $400 a month just to be stranded. Smart.

OMG DUDE THIS CAR IS AWESOME! I havent had it long, but its awesome. It handles pretty good for a small little car. It doesnt have the power of my 24 dohc twin cam v6 ( 99 Contour SE SPORT , but it passes easy and handles 85mph very well. Not alot of wind noise sounds system is awesome. Only problem is the tank lid likes to stick open alot, but hey if thats it the cars awesome! The body and frame and paint look great. Everyone is complaining about up keep, but compared to my old ford its nothing. I think i pay 48 dollars for a check up where ford charged me 85 bucks. Parts arent bad either. I had my 60k tune up for only $223.00 ( at the dealer . OOOOO the only thing i dont like is the oil is really hard to do and no one save the dealer will change it.
