I feel extremely safe in this car. No swaying on the highway, can definitely see out of this one better than the 1999. They must have moved the side mirror a little. Great gas mileage, great pickup, comfortable..heated seats are great. Don't think I will ever switch..except to get a convertable...
Weakness:
lack of cd player...no ash tray, or at least I can't find it>> I purchased a 1999 beetle and loved it for 3 years. Minor problems, battery blew up, gas latch wouldn't latch. Decided I needed something larger so I went to a jeep liberty...WRONG MOVE! Nothing but trouble with the Liberty, came back to a 2002 beetle and love it again. Don't know why I ever switched. Do miss the CD but would rather be safe than have the cd player. My dealership is wonderful. Well, the people I deal with are. They bend over backwards to keep me happy. Salesperson just called to make sure I still liked it...and I've had it almost six months.. Similar Products Used: 1979 beetle convertable, 1999 beetle |

Looks cool. Powerful turbo engine. OK gas mileage.

Number of minor repairs, COST of repairs, After market radios make check engine light unoperative, CD player not standard equipment in $24,000 car.(they want About $500.00 for theirs). Purchased this car for my wife from a private owner that bought it new. Under warranty, the previous owner had the dashboard replaced for several electrical problems, and had something with the trunk latch repaired. With only about 20,000 miles, I thought all the bugs were out, and this was a great buy. WRONG!! With warranty expired, the check engine light came on and for them to plug in their machine to evaluate the problem was $85.00. They told me it was a faulty sensor. Part cost $12.00, labor=$60.00, Bottomline: $157.00 for a $12.00 part that took them 5 mins. to repair. Since then, the check engine light has gone on 2 more times with similar results. (small part, BIG price!) Also, BEWARE OF AFTER MARKET RADIOS INSTALLED IN YOUR VW! Their check engine light machine is wired through the radio and doesn't work if you have an after market radio installed!(That's another story). This all happened with under 25,000 miles! In sum, If you like a cool looking car with alot of expensive, time consuming headaches, this is your car!! Similar Products Used: 1979 volkswagon beetle With many repairs. |

Turbo S New Beetle
Strength:
Just breakin it in right now but hpefully it will give me it's full potential. Love the sound of the turbo kickin in.
Weakness:
None at the moment, if any will post up later So far I am very happy with this car. This a different experience for me. My husband and I also own a 2002 MINI Cooper S and so far I like the front seats in the Beetle rather than the MINI, soo much easier. I also like the Monsoon sound system. No problems yet, however my Beetle didn't come with a CD player. |

TDI New Beetle

Diesel engine - excellent gas milage. 800+ kms per tank (45L per fill) If i could drop VW's diesel engine in another vehicle....
Weakness:
Below poor Quality. Expensive repairs. At time of purchase - warranty was 2yrs-40000kms.(i wonder if they knew what they were putting on the road?) Is this characteristic of any VW's made in Mexico? Are the German built VW's better? Bought car new- first and last time purchasing VW. Quality below POOR. Paid $30000 Canadian. Since new, trunk latch has never worked properly-taken to 2 different VW Dealers-neither was able to correct problem. Rattles and vibrations in the doors. Lock assembly fell out of the drivers door. Gas gauge does its own thing whenever it feels like. Power window switch broke on the drivers door. Changing headlights is 1/2 hour labour at the dealer. Dealer installed spoiler - brake light stopped working- they charged to repair the connector that fell off. Coin tray above drivers seat fell apart. Brakes cost $1000 dollars to repair - 4 rotors - 4 pads - 2 calipers on rear - All of this with under 100k km(60k miles) Similar Products Used: 1991 Toyota Corolla 4dr Sedan - 250,000 kms - never experienced the quality/poor workmanship issues at all. I bought this car new as well. |

Good MPG
Weakness:
Costs a fortune to repair anything and accessibility of routine parts is minimal without specialized equipment. Not a very good vehicle from the standpoint of enginnerring.Runs OK but repairs are outrageous. This vehicle is obviously designed to wring dollars out of the purchaser for routine maintenance. I would strongly advise women and non-mechanical minded people to avoid this car like the plague. Similar Products Used: Toyota--Much much superior!! |

New Beetle, 2.0
Strength:
Can go up hills in a single bound. Does great in the snow. 40 miles a gallon easy. Colorful Dashboard. Sunroof. Heated Seats. I love its soft curves. It turns into a hatchback, with backseats down-sleeps two comfortably. Herbie Rides Again! & it's still the Love bug.
Weakness:
The cost of repair. The engine light/electrical problem at 29,000 miles. Burns oil. I love my New Beetle. I bought it 6 months and 5,000 miles ago. But the emmissions engine light went on, then off. Now the engine will not turn over and VW says it will cost 900. and that might not fix the problem. But I still love my VW Beetle called Slugbugs by teenagers, but called Snowball by me. Burns oil...had to add a quart after 2000 miles...that's about it so far....(fingers crossed) I have had this car since september of 2002, and i absolutly love it! The only problem i had was the check engine light coming on, which was covered by warranty, and was believed to be a faulty sensor. Haven't had a problem since. The only thing i notice is about a month ago, my car at idle started making a low 'rattling' sound from the motor....? i'm 17, love cars, but not an expert...wondering if it's just the car breaking in? Anyway, great interior...a chick magnet. Reflex Silver. Similar Products Used: none |

TOO MANY TO LIST THIS CAR IS FUN TO DRIVE, BUT HAS MANY PROBLEMS. THE WORST PROBLEM IS THAT IT BURNS A LOT OF OIL. ( I NEVER HAD A NEW CAR THAT I HAD TO ADD OIL TO IT).ON A TRIP FROM NEW YORK TO MIAMI THE OIL WELL GOT EMPTY(YES, EMPTY)THAT WAS A SHOCK TO ME.I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE POWER WINDOW SWITCH. (THE CAR WAS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD). ALSO, WHEN I HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES, I HAD TO PAY 600 DOLLARS. THAT IS TOO MUCH!!!!!. I STILL LOVE THE PERFORMANCE AND THE LOOK OF THE CAR AND I WAS TEMPTED TO BUY THE NEW CONVERTIBLE, BUT I HAVE OTHER FRIENDS WHO HAVE VOLKSWAGENS AND THEY ARE JUST NOT RELIABLE CARS. TDI Beetle
Strength:
good gas milage 40 mpg fair response
Weakness:
headlights burn out too often headlight not easy to replace by yourself battery life short (2 years) poor brake response VW customer service does not care!!! window regulators fail interior not durable I’ve had my new Beetle for 4 ½ years now and it has been a fair good car except for the constant problems with the headlights burning out and the window regulators breaking. I have 163,500 miles and have had to replace the headlights 7 times driver’s side and 6 times passenger side. They have always been replaced by a dealer or authorized mechanic charging about $40 each time. The interior of the car is not the best – headliner is ¾ off, seats stain and cannot clean, cup holders break. The TDI is also very expensive to maintain. Oil changes cost $40 to replace some cheap paper oil filter and use diesel oil. The timing belt cost $1600 and the A/C cost $1500. VW North America told me that they do not get many complaints on the headlights, which I find hard to believe since I see many Beetles missing headlights. They have extended the warranty on the window regulators to 7 yeay/70,000 miles. |

Strength:
Handling, engine, transmission, interior layout, heated/comfortable/adjustable seats, styling, fun.
Weakness:
Interior paint and trim wears off too soon. (door handles). Would like extra gauges to monitor engine and transmission. Great features, performance, design. Too many little problems happening lately, however. Power windows intermittently go up very slow, especially in cold weather. Driver's side is the worst. No leaks anywhere. Replaced driver's side headlight bulb myself for a cost of $6 and 30 mins. of time. Good selection of aftermarket parts for the engine and body and interior. Check engine light comes on intermittently. Probably a sensor or computer glitch. Autozone will check it for free. I'll replace a sensor myself if that's all it is. It averages about 28 mpg fuel economy. I put pure synthetic Mobil 1 oil in it. Runs quieter and cooler now. The trunk latch is weird about relocking before I can get out of my seat to open it. Transmission works great. Hope VW dealer will fix the windows for free. Similar Products Used: 2000 Toyota Celica GT |
