Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

Engine was quick and ii was fun to drive.

Weakness:

EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE EINGINE!

I bought this car so that I could have something reliable through out college. I recieved the opposite. I have had more trouble with this car and different dealers in town. First I got a bad battery in my car and it started when it wanted to. The window regulators have both been replaced twice in this car that they did under warranty free because there was a national recall on them. Then while fixing them they scratched the tint on the window in multiple places and did not have it fixed. After that my engine was making a noise, while under warranty, they made me pay $75 for labor after they told me in the beginning that they would not charge me anything. Now my paint on my hood is bubbling and it is also flaking off my front bumper. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR.

Everyone has one!! And if you don't, you should get one!

This makes my second Jetta. My first 99 Jetta saved my life when a Police Officer ran me off the road into a telephone pole. The safety features are remarkable. I will never own another vehicle!!

Good pick up, the standard features are upgrades on many other cars.

Weakness:

Transmission and engine

I should have known something was wrong with the dealer and the car. Less than a mile after I left the dealer with my car, the gas light came on, and less than 300 miles, I heard a ticking, checked the oil and it was two quarts low. The engine light started coming on and off at around 50K miles. But the end all is that the car started jerking in reverse one day and within hours, I was stuck on the highway, the transmission was gone and the car wouldn't go in reverse and just barely forward. Since I only had 56K miles on the car, I thought that the warranty covered this. But no, I was not the original owner. I have had other cars where this did not matter. If it was under warranty than the work got done. So now I am stuck trying to "find" $3500, while still trying to pay for this piece of . . .

Strength:

Beside being ultra reliable, the car gets good mileage, has plenty of power, has a huge trunk and handles well. In short it is a pleasure to drive. The fit and finish is exceptional. Paint still looks great. Unlike GM it uses separate levers for turn signals, wipers etc. On my Blazer when you put the turn signal on, half the time the wipers start up! Our car was built in Germany, perhaps the newer cars, which I think are built in Mexico are not as good a vehicle.

Weakness:

None that I can think of...it's been an incredible car. I'll drive it until quits..which'll probably be another 10 years.

We purchased a 1986 Jetta in Dec. '85. We still own it! This has been a fabulous car. In over 17 years we have not had a single problem with the drivetrain (or much else for that matter). I can only recall taking it to the shop once to have a tie-rod end replaced and once the radiator sprung a leak (many years ago). We do regular maintenance. We've had a few little things eg. one or two of the windows wouldn't roll up easily, the driver's heated seat quit within the first year (fixed under warranty), the odometer quit a few years, ago but really nothing significant. We're still running the same clutch!

Strength:

Road handling is good.

Weakness:

Poor quality cup holders...poor company service/support. Poor gas mileage. Expensive to service. Parts don't last.

Gas mileage 35-40 mpg not the 50 advertised. Brakes and MAF sensor had to be replaced at 60K. VW only paid for 1/2 MAF sensor & refused to consider remainder. $1220.00 service cost at 6400 kms.

Strength:

styling inside and out, trunk size (for a small car) fit and finish, practicality

Weakness:

2.0 could uise more power (115 horsepower seems really old school - but adequate) rear seat room

I have owned this vehicle for four years and only have great things to say about it. still looks and runs perfectly and only the regular service has ever been required. I am actually picking up another one this week because we have been so happy with the first. personally, I would highly recommend it.

Strength:

Lots of torque more than any in the class. Good power Very classy Good gas mileage Good sound system Lots more power with the P-Flo and exhaust Great on long trips and in city

Weakness:

Needs taller 5 gear or a 6 speed

I have had my car for a year now and I don't know what every one is complaining about. Myself and 3 other friends own Jettas and have had nothing wrong like what people are talking about. I have had not one problem. The car is fully broken in and still making power. The gas mileage is great and so are the looks. I compaired all the cars in the class before purchasing and the jetta was the the best bang for the buck. All in all I love this car and will be back for more. BUY THIS CAR!

Model Reviewed: Jetta 1.8 T 5-speed Manual

Strength:

Fun to drive for the millisecond when something isn't malfunctioning.

Weakness:

Window regulator malfunction, electrical system, brakes, ignition coil replacement, oil usage, interior design (cup holder that allows condensation from drinks to drip on audio system), etc....

I guess I can find cold comfort in the fact that almost ALL postings on carreview.com have been negative about the Volkswagen experience. I am currently in the process of writing my third customer complaint to Volkswagen Customer Care (Ironic name isn't it....)and was referring to carreview.com to quote the experience of other 2001 1.8 T Jetta owners. Let me start with all the problems we've experienced: 1) Blikers inoperable 2) The window problems we all know about 3) Electrical issues.....(numerous) 4) Check Engine light goes on at will 5) Rear & Front Brakes (27,000 miles) I could go on and on, but I won't. Save your money and buy something else, anything else. We have been to the Volkswagen dealership 14 times in the two years we have owned this vehicle. The reason you buy a new car is to experience a small grace period where nothing malfunctions on your vehicle. This car has been nothing but a disappointment.
