Strength:

Durability, mileage, cost, and A/C.

Weakness:

Rust, needs power steering, sometimes passing on the highway is a bad idea.

I bought this car primarily for winter driving and the occasional off-road experience. This was the best $500 Canadian I ever spent. I bought the car two years ago and the odometer on the car just passed 300,000kms this month and it runs beautifully. Since I bought this car I have put about $200 excluding gas and insurance (which don’t cost much in this car) into the car. About one hundred dollars was from me ripping off the muffler a few times while off-roading, the car just wouldn’t quit going. There are only two problems I found with the car. It is in serious need of power steering for city driving. The body has a tendency to rust in certain areas. As a preference I would much rather have a manual transmission for a fun drive. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking into buying their first car.

Strength:

great gas mileage, easy to park,

Weakness:

power, power, power...it''s not even offered as an option. You can''t even merge on the freeway with the A/C on. 1994 power steering not even standard.

Reliable, basic transportation...for local. This car was my vehicle for about 5 years...it is small, easy to park, and gets great gas mileage (35+). The bad news is that you can''t drive on the highway above 55 or even merge safely, the engine is so weak. Every time I drove 60+ the engine would complain vehemently, the car would shake, and so I had to puttputt along in the slow lane. It also had no handling skills, even after I changed tires. This is coming from someone who drives a pickup truck--I''m not looking for a Diablo, but an automobile should stay on the curves at 20 mph! The car NEEDS antilock brakes badly. I suppose for what I paid it is an okay deal, but I would recommend to anyone looking at used ones now--buy a Civic or Integra instead--they are more powerful by a landslide. The seats in the basic 1994 Tercel do also NOT fold down and it has a miniscule trunk, so forget about carrying anything. The A/C doesn''t work very well, and drains the engine so badly it cannot be used on merging or hills. I must say it was a reliable car though-- 5 years and NO problems whatsoever. Okay for basic local transportation or college car, but not commuting or vacations. And buy one with power steering--YOU WILL need it, despite dealer''s pitch.

Strength:

Good on gas , cute , doesn''t take long to wash because its small. Pretty good pickup.

Weakness:

Ticking noise , small, brakes have always squealed.

Pretty good car very small though, my best friend is 6''5 and he has a hard time getting in. Its a good car to go back and forth to college in. Bought it with 32k its now 56k miles still runs good always had a clicky noise. Stero system is lacking. Though its not worth what we paid I would say $3500 on a 96 would be better then 8500 we got ripped by the dealership :''(

Strength:

Excellent on gas 45-50 mpg, Doesn''t look to bad with a bit of wopping up, Can lace in 1st & 2nd. Very small easily hot boxed.

Weakness:

Crappy engine that burns oil like something sick, with 4 hoes in it bottoms out on anything more then a pebble, Trunk can hold enough booze, nowhere to hide my ganja. When my buddy Jet 6.4'' 250lbs gets inside its like rammin a gallon of sh*t into a match box.

I purchased this car last june, because i thought buying toyota was buying quality. This is the biggest load of crapola you will ever hear. I have nothing but trouble with this vechile, i''ve have had the engine rebuilt 3 times, replaced entire exhaust, cv axil seals, washer pump, tires, brakes, fuel filter & pump, etc.. list keeps on going. This car for a small engine (1.5) has some balls, can take a civic with same displacement. With the 5pd. its not too bad 180 km/h flat 200+ km/h dropping from the sky @8000 rpm - screamin like a school boy. You have to drive this car as if you''ve stold it for to have any balls at all.

Strength:

I babbled on and on above. Economical yet in a quirky way...like a modern day air cooled VW Bug (which I''ve also had). Turn the key and go and go and go...

Weakness:

Seats. The oil/smoke thing. Pokey starting out but good cruiser.

Though Tamaqua has had her minor issues and everyday maintenance, she''s never left me stranded. Very reliable and a great "hug the road" feel driving down the road. Great for parallel parking. Can go 85 for miles and miles although it''s a bit pokey starting out at lights or at the bottom of hills. Needs momentum I guess. Anyway, she''s been going through oil for a while and finally failed inspection. I decided that''s served me well over the past two years and 60,000 miles of driving all over the place. The new valve seals, piston rings, tune up and 800 dollars etc will be worth it and will hopefully keep it alive for a few more years. Anyone else have similar work done? Did it start going through oil and smoking here and there right away? Hope not.

Strength:

- good stereo
- excellent interior lay out.
- good engine
- excellent lock protection!
- good gas mileage.

Weakness:

It's a complicated car. If you crack your tail light, you have to pay up to $250 Canadian to replace the WHOLE light..not just the cover because the tail light comes in one unit. So a person with a crack or a person with a totally smashed out light will both have to pay $250 to replace.

This car is great. It's got that sexy sheek look to it (the newer models) and the interior is comfortable and well laid out. Stereo is awesome, steering is awesome, seats are awesome, everything is great! I love the back of the car on the newer models...not the rounded but the good chunky backs that kinda go up. I'd love to add a spoiler to jazz things up. Black is the perfect color for the car. Engine makes a beautiful revving sound when accelerating!

Strength:

It has excellent gas mileage. It has plenty of room up front. It is extremely reliable. It looks good. The body style will not go out of style.

Weakness:

Power feels a little weak if you slam on the gas. The rear is worthy of a real sports car. The trunk is average. Road noise is high on the freeway

The tercel was our first car when we bought it in 1995. It has been a fantastic car for us. Besides the regular oil and filter and tune-up at 30 000, 60 000 miles, we haven't spent a dime on repair in six years and now 85 000 miles. It's a good looking car and even though it isn't very fast, it compensates by being reliable. The front is quite roomy for this little compact, even compared to its bigger sister the Corolla. The back is a place where only children are allowed. We never regretted buying this vehicule. We intend to keep it until it dies, and to this day it performs like the first day.
