Strength:

This thing will take whatever you throw a it...snow, inclement weather, 2 kids eating in the backseat, you name it

Weakness:

It did like its oil towards the end
Noisy on the Road (just turn the radio up)

This was the best car I ever had. I traded it in for my Solara in 2006. The car was 12 years old (to the exact day..never forget the *shocked* looked on the sales guy's eyes when I drove up in it!). I put less than $4K TOTAL into this car in the 12 years I had it. The interior was quite beat up towards the end. Made it to 189K miles. LOVED IT!

It did like to drink lots of oil towards the end---but I just fed it regularly (Jiffy Lube fills up for free between changes! Gotcha!). Other than that no problems. When I traded it still had the original clutch and pretty much everything else. Only things I ever did were the O2 sensor valve, one starter, and the valve cover gasked (did that twice). All the rest was completely normal maintanence.

I had the bare bones stripped model..2 dr without A/C, vinyl seats. Cheap as I could get (was a starving college student at the time!). I NEVER ONCE regretted having to get a 2nd job for a year to make the payment on the car.

I put more money into my Solara in the almost 2 years I owned it than ALL the money for Tercel. Amazing.

GREAT car!!!!!

Strength:

-Dependability
-Great gas mileage
-Easy to maintain
-Good acceleration with a manual transmission

Weakness:

-Backseat access is limited
-Small car which can be intimidating while sharing the road with today's giant SUV's.

Just a great car! This car lasted 13 years for me and was still running with 200,000 miles on it when I finally decided to upgrade. If I had just one word to describe the Tercel it would be, Dependable. This car never let me down no matter how stupid I was by taking it on rough dirt roads, over snow, etc. I do not think that I will ever have such a great car eventhough I will spend much more for my future cars than what I paid for the Tercel. I would recommend this car without any reservation, it's simply a wonderful car and a phenomenal deal.

Strength:

Fun, sweet tuner if done correctly, not everyone has it :P, cheap! Surprisingly quiet on the highway(well mine is anyway)

Weakness:

Don't like the thought of the single beam suspension in the rear...shakes whole car if you go over a big bump.

Awesome car!! Car fricken lasted surprisingly 411,000+ miles before I blew a cylinder :D(not gonna say how.) Car was so reliable, I bought another one for $4,000 right after! This one has 130,000 miles after owning it for a year, but if its anything like my old one, I've still got close to 270,000+ miles to go!

Strength:

Easy & simple (none of that useless "power seat belts & heated seats" junk), fast with a 4age or 7afe engine swap, good project car

Weakness:

Cabin suffers from severe road noise, could use wider wheels, not a beginners car

My dad picked up this car in '03, planning to use it as a work car. However, i picked up my permit & started looking for a car. I wanted something simple, no fancy stuff because i planned to modify it. I searched the classifieds, the cheapest car was a '91 civic hatchback, 160k miles, all stock for $5500. way too much, so i started working on the tercel. in about a month, i had it up & running, & repairs altogether cost me about 30 bucks. i have a 750w sound system with XM, & im planning on a overhead monitor next month. It's an excellent car, but i would not recommend it as a daily driver.

excellent MPG

I have owned a Tercel before and they are great cars. I had a 1984 hatch back auto,ac,and had the right tuning that gave me 53 mpg on the hiway. I now have a 1996 Tercel Sedan and it has an 4 speed automatic with ac, this car gets 48 MPG. These are great cars, I thing they made them too good. If you are looking for a compact car that gets great gas milage then this is the car for you. This is my daily commuter car I do 800 miles a week. The 1996 has plenty of head room and is a pleasure to drive and work on.

Strength:

Great fuel economy Surprizing highway handeling Cheap operating costs Great in snow Great first car

Weakness:

Lacks interior size mainly back seat Lacks power going up hills and passing cars Tires are too small Little things freaqently go wrong

The Toyota Tercel has been a great car for me as a student. No it dosen't have the styling of a Jaguar or the power of a Mercedes but it has a greater advantage, its cheap! This car is very reliable and very few things have gone wrong. I wish they would have a bit larger tire as it would be more trusting on highways and handeling sharp turns. This car should not be used as a family sedan, it does lack size and power for a primary family sedan. It is great for getting from point a to b with few costs. I was surprized with this car on the highway how well it handles, if you take your hands of the steering wheel it stays firmly in place. I highly recommend this car for reliablility, low costs, and exceptional fuel economy.
