Strength:

First and formost, it is a Toyota. It is quiet ... maybe too quiet. Smooth acceleration and quite responsive in the 65 - 95 range. Luxurious interior, well thought-out dash.

Weakness:

Paint doesn't gleem like nice black Maxima's. Not the feedback from the steering I would like.

Have the 2000 Solara V-6, 5 speed, black with charcoal gray interior. I expected something quicker, but what it lacks off the line is made up for at high-speed cruising. It is very, very quiet. I could take this car across country and not feel fatigued. By the way, as for mpg's - they promised me a high of 27, but I got 32 with the air on. For every criticism I can think of I find two or three other things that make me feel like I have the best car for the price - I paid around 26,500.

Strength:

I like the stereo system a lot, especialy the JBL speakers that came with it, but thats it!!!

Weakness:

Bad Styling, looks just like the Chrysler sebring, which is 10 grand less.

I payed 30K for this car and the next day I saw it in the news paper for 15K for the same but about 3 months older. Its an ugly car and the interior has tipical toyota styling. For 30k I could have bought a much better car, but my wike made buy this crap.

Strength:

Toyota reliability, sporty looks, sleek interior, very quite engine, and lots of leg room (front & back).

Weakness:

The premium JBL sound system is weak, and the car sits too high.

CAR/$: 2000 Toyota Solara SE V6 $26,500
Overall, I am very pleased with the car. I was drawn to the sporty look, and Toyota's reputation for quality. The interior looks like more expensive coupes. The engine is sooooooooo smooth, you can hardly hear it! The 3.0L V6 accelerates the Solara to 60MPH in 7.5 secs(auto). I average 20MPG mixed driving (city/highway).

I would not hesitate to recommend this car to anyone looking for a sporty and reliable coupe!

$25,400 for SLE model. Highly recommended. It has more than enough power for ordinary driving, is very comfortable, handles well, has build quality equal to Lexus for a lot less money and is a fine looking car. The consistant reliability of Toyota was a large factor in the dicision to buy this car. Also the 2000 model has upgrades included that are important to me such as 16 inch alloy wheels and better tires standard. The only additional equipment was Side airbags, traction control, sound upgrade and floor mats. I did not want sunroof and had to order special. This only took a reasonable 1 month. Satisfaction with dealer and car is 100%.

Strength:

Good balance of looks and performance.
Sporty enough to be a fun ride but luxurious for a night out.

Weakness:

Weak factory tires.
Slow off the line.

Great car. I got the SLE-V6. The V-6 has a little punch yet is decent on gas. The interior great, and I get many compliments on the inside and outside. The ride is very quiet, and the engine is so quiet sometimes I have to strain to hear it. I bought wider tires (1') and a lower profile, which dramatically improved the car previously lushy handling.

Strength:

Comfortable, quiet, sporty looking, and it wears the red color extremely well. It accelerates well enough, and handles well enough when you are paying attention. Good fit and finish, everything works. More luxurious feel than the Accord Coupe.

Weakness:

Not much feel for the road. Very little feedback transmitted through the steering, so that I have to pay more attention to where the car is heading, rather than being able to just assume it will keep going straight. This may be because I was used to a manual steering Sentra. I want more resistence when the car is going to change direction. The trunk is big, but the opening is restrictive, and the trunk opening into the backseat is nearly useless, it's so restricted. Fine for skis, no doubt, but not much else. No trunk release on the keyless entry. And the door often doesn't close on the first try, requires slamming.

It's an excellent car, and I feel better every time I look at it, largely because the red is sooo beautiful. I paid about 22k. I would recommend the Solara to anyone wanting this size coupe. This is the choice if you want quiet, comfortable, and of course reliable. But the Accord is a better driver's car. It's a toss up, but I wouldn't trade.

Would get a V6 in hindsite.
A little too much play in the wheel - not a performance car.
Under-steers around turns

I would recommend it

Strength:

Great car for the price. Get the manual and you have a little sport along with ALL the Camry advantages.

Weakness:

Friggin ugly ass spoiler. Tried to take it off, but realized that I would have to pay to cover the holes that supported the spoiler.

I love this car. I got the manual transmission and it's really been a blast. One thing that I recommend is that you get the automatic version unless you like looking at the rpm for when to shift. It's extremely quiet! If you've got the radio on, you won't hear the engine until you hit around 4000rpm. Also, I've had a little trouble with the manual. Sometimes it just doesn't want to go into reverse or first gear. Other than the gears and the spoiler, I have nothing to complain about. As of right now, I'm lusting for TRD to finally release the supercharger for this car. I mean, I have fun racing the older model mustang gt automatics (surprisingly, my solara keeps up with a 1997 v8 all the way to 60mph), but I want the big fish. Gimme the supercharger so I can start smoking the new gen mustangs and give 40 thousand dollar cars a good race, or whooping! =) If you've never driven one and wish to have a good overall car, test drive the solara. Guarantee to be on the top of your mind if you want a sporty car with Lexus ride quality, under 30 big ones.

Strength:

GOOD BUILD QUALITY, SMOOTH DRIVE TRAIN, GOOD FUEL ECOMONY,FAIRLY QUICK
ACCELERATION, NICE STEREO SYSTEM,ROOMY

Weakness:

COULD USE A LITTLE MORE TIRE AND SIGHTLY STIFFER SUSPENSION.

THE SOLARA HAS BEEN A VERY PLEASING AUTOMOBILE TO OWN SO FAR. THE CAR HAS
A LOT OF CLASS AND STYLE FOR THE THE MONEY. AND MOST IMPORTANT IT IS A
TOYOTA. THE ABOVE MENTIONED CHEVY IS THE LAST AMERICAN CAR I WILL EVER
BUY. I ENDED UP TRADING THE CAR IN WITH ONLY 15K MILES AND MANY TRIPS TO
THE DEALER. I TEST DROVE THE HONDA ACCORD COUPE,AND THE NISSAN MAXIMA.
THE ACCORD WAS NICE BUT HAD A SMALLER INTERIOR AND LESS TOW CAPACITY (1 K
VS 2k). THE MAXIMA WAS AN IMPRESSIVE AUTO BUT IT HAS NO INDEPENDENT REAR
SUSPENSION AND TOYOTA HAD A UP ON NISSAN QUALITY WISE. THE AMERICAN COUPES
IN THE SAME PRICE RANGE JUST DO NOT COMPARE AND WERE NOT A OPTION. I JUST
CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW A EDUCATED CONSUMER WOULD SPEND HIS OR HER HARD EARNED
MONEY ON A AMERICAN CAR WHEN THE JAPANESE CARS ARE SUPERIOR IN EVERY ASPECT.
