Toyota Solara SE
Strength:
I guess I could say that the body of it held up alright, that is, after it sent me into 3 front bumper to back bumper flips, and 4 side over side rolls. I loved all the features of the car, previous to the accident (see below).
Weakness:
The wheels fall off while driving. (see review summary) I was driving down interstate 95 one sunny morning, going 70 mph (the speed limit in NC) when my rear driver side tire detached from the axle. Not just the rubber part, but brakes and all ripped off from the rest of the car. The missing wheel caused my 6 month old car to go swerving across the highway three times before running off the right side of the road. As the three-wheeled car went down a small hill, it was sent into flips and rolls, 7 in total. I landed right side up in a field on the side of the highway; no airbags (the car had 2 front impact and 2 side impact) had deployed. This past week I met a man who stopped working for Toyota two months ago and his Toyota dealership had recently sold a woman a 2001 Toyota Solara, in which all four of her tires fell off as she was driving down the highway, in the same manner. Investigators have determined that the bolts were not properly attached to the tire. Similar Products Used: 2001 Honda Accord Coupe EX. I just bought it two days ago, but so far, so good. |

SE 4cyl Manual
Strength:
This car has a nice sporty look with nice amenities from a luxury car. The plus side in my opinion is that it is not driven by many people, so if you want to break from the pack look no further. With a TRD quickshifter this car is a joy to drive.
Weakness:
The only gripe I have is the performance. I've driven the V6 SLE model and it quite simply decimates the 4cyl with just about the same mileage. I'd recommend this car for looks and the comfortable ride, not to mention it looks a little different from the rest of the pack. Similar Products Used: Compared to a '97 Camry and a '98 Sebring Convertible (previous cars)this car offers smoother acceleration, a softer ride, and a refreshing break from the pack. |

Strength:
Quality materials used throughout. Toyota spared no expense when insulating the interior from road/engine noise and the upgrade JBL stereo is fabulous.
Weakness:
It is beginning to grow on me, but I really could do without the rear spoiler. Unfortunately, they all seem to come with them now. Other than that, I have no complaints. I prefer a manual transmission and the Solara is a joy to drive. With a light touch, you can shift the gears imperceptibly (no herky, jerky). The interior is luscious and offers the same luxurious feeling of a Lexus. I recommend this car because of the solid, high quality feel and ride. As other reviewers have commented, entry and exit from the rear is a tad awkward (hey, it's a COUPE!!), but it really is quite comfortable once you're back there! Similar Products Used: I evaluated the other cars in its class and none compare. I won't buy another domestic car because I really don't believe they have the same quality standards. The Accord Coupe just didn't offer the striking styling and roomy interior as the Solara. And regrettably, the Lexus SC400 is not in my budget. |

Toyota Solara SE
Strength:
Fuel efficient, Quiet Ride, Responsive Steering, JBL Sound System, Comfortable for 4 Adults, Toyota sweats the details (amenities, compartments etc.)
Weakness:
Nothing yet. This is a quiet riding comfortable car with well-laid out controls and superb fit and finish. I chose the 4 cyl. Model for fuel efficiency and it has not disappointed. It is smooth and delivers reliable power. It does not provide gut-wrenching acceleration. However, this was not a major consideration in my decision to purchase this model. I enjoy the power moonroof, power seat and JBL Soundsystem. The car handles well and the steering is responsive even though it lacks a bit of road feel. I have driven the Camry Sedan and was most impressed by the front and rear stabilizer bar suspension in the Solara. If you are interested in a sporty coupe that gets good gas mileage and has a great reputation for reliability this is the car for you. Similar Products Used: Ford Mustang: Solara is quieter, more efficient, has cleaner bodylines and better road manners. It of course lacks the acceleration and perhaps a little mystique. |

/Solara SLE/V6 Convertible
Strength:
Smooth quiet ride.
Weakness:
Ride could be a little firmer - suspension is a little too soft for true sports driving. Lacks low end torque. As far as I'm concerned, this is a midsize convertible Lexus. Your mom will love it! Smooth quiet ride. With the top up, even quieter than than my 94 Maxima. Great 6cd sound system, although the 10" subwoffer is overkill for top up driving. With the top down, the low-end washes out to a good sound balance. Similar Products Used: 74 Alfa Spider |

SE V-6
Strength:
Great looks, sporty feel, quiet, lots of power w/supercharged V-6.
Weakness:
brakes could be stronger, car sits a little too high from the factory, suspension is a little mushy. I paid around $22,000 for this car which is a great value because it has almost every option. When the supercharger was added the car went from pretty fast to extremly fast. The car is putting out close to 350 horses now with 2 inch pulley on supercharger. I would highly recommend this car to anyone that wants a sports car with the style and comfort of a Lexus. I would not recommend this car to anyone with kids. It is too expensive to have little ones climbing back and forth accross the seats, spilling drinks, and dropping food in it - espesicaly with the white interior. Similar Products Used: Maxima, Accord, Camry - In my opion this car offers better looks and performance than all of the above, but for anyone that would be transporting more than 1 passenger on a consistant basis I would get the 4 door Camry which is also available with most of the same mods from TRD. |

Strength:
Styling is subjective, but I like it. The acceleration is great with the V6 and 5 speed. Fit and finish is, of course, top notch. The interior materials feel richer than Honda or any American counterpart.
Weakness:
The paint seems scratch proof. Can't explain it, but it doesn't seem as "deep" as European makes. I paid $23,100 not including tax for an SE V6 5-speed with the PZ package which included JBL, moonroof, power seats, leather, spoiler and the 16" rims. Added side airbags, a must. Would I recommend it...definitely. I plan to add a TRD supercharger sometime soon making it a little faster. Should hold me over before the Supra comes out. The other thing that attracted to me to this vehicle is uniqueness. I don't see too many on the road, unlike Accord. Don't get me wrong, Accord is a great car. I just prefer the Solara. Similar Products Used: Tested an Accord V-6; no 5 speed. Maxima was my 2nd choice; drived beauifully but I didn't like the tail. |

Strength:
Awesome exterior, extremely quiet ride, much larger interior than it's competitors, sporty punch with the 200hp V6 w/ the traditional camry handling, pretty good JBL system, rides like a lexus...personally, i think MUCH better looking than the crampy honda accord coupe.
Weakness:
Sometimes exhibits understeering in turns I paid around $26500 for it which is pretty good considering i got almost all the options (i.e. moonroof, floor mats, side airbags etc.) I would definately recommend this car to anyone looking for a luxurious, sporty yet also roomy coupe for a mid-range price. The comfort, stability, reliability, and pleasure of driving this solara SLE definately exceeds that expected from a car in this price range. =) Have fun in your solara because I personally think you'd have to try in order not to. Solara
Strength:
The moment you sit in the solara you have to wonder, "Did Toyota forget to put the Lexus badging on this car?". This car is so well put together. Closing the door, you can feel the how perfectly everything fits together. The in dash six cd player is so cool. The electrochromatic rear view mirror is excellent in reducing the glare from those damn SUVs. Good power and good gas mileage mix. This car's ride is twice as good as the regular Camry. The Solara was assembled in the Toyota plant where the Lexus RX300 is going. Was Toyota seeing if they could build a Lexus quality vehicle in North America?
Weakness:
The electrochromatic mirror idea should have been expanded to the two side mirrors. If your without kids, but a little too old for a two seater sportscar, then the Solara is definetely a best buy. Similar Products Used: Much better than Camry and Accord. |

Toyota Solara SLE V6
Strength:
I very happy with the Toyota Solara SLE V6. It came fully loaded with the added safety features of passenger and side airbags. It has the backing of the Camry family reputation and it feels like your in a much more luxurious car (like the Lexus SC400, my fantasy car but twice the price of the Solara). This car rides so quietly and smoothly, you can't tell the engines on. It's very comfortable for long distance travel. This is my first V6, and I can definitely feel the difference in power. It's averaging about 25 miles per gallon city/freeway driving. For a 2-door coupe, there's plenty of leg room in both the front and back seats. The trunk is very roomy and the two rear seats fold down for easy loadig. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Weakness:
I'm short, so I tend to have seat pulled up further towards the steering wheel. This makes it a little awkward to reach back for the seat belts. Although, the gas mileage is fair, the V6 eats up the gas much faster than 4-cylinders. For individuals with families, I wouldn't recommend a 2-door, access to the rear seats could get cumbersome. $25,000. I would definitely recomend this car for individuals looking for a classy looking sports coupe. Similar Products Used: None |
