have been driving a 2002 solara sle v6 for a month. it''s very quiet and has ample power. interior is very nice and jbl sound system is also excellent. it gives a smooth ride but handling and suspension isn''t as firm as I want it to be. nice looking car (front and side looks) but i don''t like the new taillights. (i have been looking for after-market taillights with no success. let me know if you know where I can get a pair.)

Strength:

Sharp looking, lots of power, nice sound system.

Weakness:

We bought the top of the line SLE which still carries a good book value until you talk to the dealer. They have their own values and basically tell you the car isnt worth much when you want to trade.

Its been one thing after another. We are on our 3rd set of tires with only 31,000 miles on the car. The dealer blows us off. Toyota customer service blows us off. Everytime we have a problem the dealer makes us feel like its our fault. The quality in the car just isnt there. We have also had some major problems with the transmission continually shifting. The dealer fixed it under warranty, but we just dont trust the car anymore. We cant wait to get rid of it.

Strength:

Nice styling and decent power, although nothing extraordinary. Roomy interior.

Weakness:

Handling. This car feels like it''s all over the road whenever it''s windy. The stock 16" Bridgestone tires provide poor traction in icy conditions. The brakes sometimes feel as though they are not going to stop the car. I feel like I''m sliding or being pushed right through my stops. The rear seats do not fold down flat. This makes using that already small portal very difficult and almost useless. The rear seat belts are situated so that back seat passengers are practically sitting on top of the latch assembly. They have to get their behinds up off the seat before being able to latch the seatbelt. The belts are suitable for small children and not adults. The power driver''s seat has no slide forward feature for passenger entry/egress. The only way to move it forward is electrically, which is slow. No frame around the door windows.

I purchased the Solara for many reasons but the two that stood out at the time were the supposed Toyota quality and the overall styling. I have owned this car for 2 years; it has been almost mechanically trouble free. BUT -I had to have my front brake pads and rotors replaced at 32,500 miles. The brakes were so worn that the warning light was coming on. The front brakes were upwards of 85% worn while the back ones only about 40%. Front brakes wear more but this is unusual anyway, especially for mostly highway driving. The rotors were too warped to turn down. The paint on this car is absolutely horrible. I have never seen paint damage so easily on any car. After one year, both door had thousands (no exaggeration) of pits in the paint, all the way through. It seems as though the paint is too soft, like a manufacturing error. Toyota wants no part of it. The interior has too much plastic that rattles. The passenger seat rattles loudly. Toyota claims the entire seat needs replacing and that there is no "fix" for the problem. Automatic headlights are a good idea but there is no way to just turn the feature off. The lights turn on and off annoyingly when it is just before sunrise and just after sunset, or any other low light condition where headlights are not really needed.

Looks, ride, suspension, INTERIOR

Weakness:

Gas mileage is alittle disappointing (compared to honda accord)

Personally, I love this car. I''ve only had it for alittle over 1 month ;however, it''s extremely fun to drive (and stare at). Constant flow of compliments from friends and family. Very good balance of sport and luxury. The interior is exactly identically to the ''99 Lexus ES 300! I love/hate the fact that its not under the Lexus label. I love it because it keeps cost way down, hate it because, well who wouldnt rather a lexus over toyota :)

Strength:

ride smoothness, look, quality. Great car with a good engine. Far better than accord V6 and prelude. Great for the money

Weakness:

Sometimes lazy during acceleration. Some trim pieces rattle when bass hits. Overall no real weakness.

Great Car, Smooth Ride, Lexus Quality. Not to many aftermarket products, but more are being in production. Good Factory Speakers, but I needed more bass and added 2 JBL 12 inch subs with a PPI amp. Future mods include body kit and paint job, maybe new msd ignition, and supercharger, and 17in velox racing rims. I have a Greddy Cat-back exhaust, injen cold-air intake.

Strength:

v 6 engine , very smooth good sound system interior space trunk gas mileage

Weakness:

soft suspension could use more power

i have owed the se v6 solara for almost 8 months and 16,000 miles. the car is fairly decent, it has good power and the car is very smooth. the car could use a little more suspension considering the auto has 200 hp. one bit of advise will give to potential buyers is do not consider buy this car with the ivory cloth interior. it is a big mistake, the interior gets dirty very easy. i also would suggest upgrading to 17" wheels and tires. it really improved the handling and did not hurt the ride quality

Strength:

-the v6 is decent, it is quiet and power delivery is smooth. not a real performer but more on that later -the interior is definitely lexus, everything is solid and crisp -the looks -this car is very comfortable for long trips becuz of its spaciousness and quietness

Weakness:

-the engine, though smooth, isn''t exactly a beast. the car doesn''t have mad acceleration due to its weight. -the handling is soft and there is significant body roll. it seems that the suspension is softer than what it should be for a car with 200hp. but that could just be the way i drive.

This car is good for the market that it was aimed for. It is spacious, luxurious, and smooth. When people say that it is a Lexus with a Toyota badge, they aren''t kidding. This car is also nice to look at. Handling is less than good though

Strength:

Quiet ride, Excellent sound system, Toyota reliability

Weakness:

Weak factory tires, hesitation on acceleration from rest, soft suspension

Overall , I am pleased with this car. It has enough power to keep me happy and very relaxing especially on long trips of more than 100 miles. The excellent cruise control makes driving the car very relaxing. Great car for the interstate. Excellent value for the money. Lexus like interior. In fact, the interior looks like the old Lexus SC coupes! Handling significantly improved after I changed to Michelin MXV Energy Plus 215 55VR 16. V6 engine very smooth. Occasionally wish there were more power, but most of the time power delivery is excellent. Getting about 23 to 27 mpg. Very Happy about my choice of car. Definitely recommending it for someone who wants Toyota reliability but does not want to be driving a Camry. Others may be faster and better looking but none really have the combination of reliability, competence and near luxury features that this car has.... Only the Acura CL comes close... but still would have chosen this car.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Solara Convertible

Strength:

Nice looking but if you want a convertible get one that was built as one from the ground up. The convesion on this car is poor.

Weakness:

Poor convertible conversion with many flaws, rattles, squeaks and parts that don''t work together.

The car is very attractive and nice to look at. It doesn''t handle very well, power is good, but handling is poor. Short on amenities like two powers seats, interior lighting on controls, etc. Seems obvious the convertible conversion didn''t work. Top makes nasty noises going up and down like something is hitting that shouldn''t be. Top rattles on the road. Sometimes the back windows (which go up and down together on one switch and are not set to the same levels) will lock you in your car when they come up outside the front window. How bad can construction be on a top of the line Toyota.
