Toyota Avalon (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Toyota Avalon (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

Tthe 2010 Toyota Avalon may still be the best value in its class. Inside its spacious cabin, the Avalon can feel like a luxury car. Its upscale interior and quiet, well-cushioned ride wouldn't be out of place in the Lexus lineup. The Avalon's up-front purchase price is also higher than some similar cars, but large car prices have been rising quickly in recent years, and its price tag no longer stands out much. The Avalon offers a lot for the money -- and is more reliable and fuel-efficient than many competitors, allowing buyers to recoup some of that cost.

All trims are equipped with a standard 3.5-liter, V6, 268-horsepower engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

Strength:

Great power, 30 miles to the gallon, very reliable, solid build even after 180,000 miles.

Weakness:

I should have sprung for the 7 speaker stereo. The standard stereo is a bit weak.

I have had this car now for 5 years and 180,000 miles and have not had even the smallest problem. What a great car. The transmission is still as smooth as ever and the engine pulls as strong as when I bought it. I would definetly not hesitate to buy another avalon.

Power, size. This car makes you feel like you are in a luxury car, even thought it is not put into that category.

Weakness:

LACK OF AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!! I have gone through so much trouble find things for my car.

I have owned 2 cars perviously, a ''89 Accord, and a ''96 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Out of the three, this one is the best by far. I love the power compared to my Accord and have had relatively few problems. Although being 5 years old, the age is starting to catch up w/me. I''m have to do about $2000 worth of work.

Strength:

If it gets hit by an SUV you''d probably survive.

Weakness:

Handles like a marshmellow, standard interior and stereo could be out of a Buick.

I have been using the Avalon for over three weeks now as a temporary car to replace a stolen vehicle. Happily I will be getting rid of this car in two day. It reminds me of an 80''s full-sized Detriot car, blandly styled and drives like you''re piloting a large pillow down the highway. The basic stereo defies proper tuning, poor base and balance. The overall interior design is dull and plastics are very low grade. I believe this is a car to appeal to the above 50 age group who don''t particularly care about drivings so much as they care for perceived Toyota "quality and reliability." I live in South Florida, this is a perfect car to drift along the wide straight roads. I think it might even have an "automatic early bird dinner tracking device" available as an option!

Strength:

My 2nd "just turn the key and go" car. Brakes, engine, trans. I have yet to need any brake service. If I still had my VW Rabbit I''d be on my 3rd set of struts, these are fine. Preparing to buy my 3rd set of tires. Brake modulation is so good you realize that ABS is for the panick strickened. ECT works well without being too sensitive. Not as theft prone as the Camry. My service dealer, Toyota of Newburgh NY.

Weakness:

Cassette deck died just after warranty. A Panasonic unit, that''s going to cost them the sales of a 36 inch TV. The paint on the plastic bumpers comes off too easily. Some annoying paint chipping (pearl). Too many bad dealers, and nothing is done about them. Investigate before you buy. One service for something broken, all freon leaked out, that took 5 years. Wind noise could be lower. High speed cold idle is 2000 rpm, thank God for Mobil 1.

Purchased new, now 92K miles. Diet consists of Amoco Ultimate gasoline and Mobil 1. Oil changes after 6000 miles the oil looks like really weak coffee, you can still see through it, very little dirt. And if you use cheap oil and cheap gas that''s not the car''s fault. It''s a $20,000+ investment, why would you treat it like that? It runs so hot, overall, it''s a big mistake not to change the trans fluid at regular intervals. Mine shows minor signs of burning at 30K. Transmission bands "shed", the first change is critical and should occur early. Suspension is on the soft side, a great car for the Northeast. Sane highway driving, under 65, I average 28 mpg all summer, 25 in the winter. People complain about city mileage, hey it does weigh 3300 pounds. Same story for acceleration.

Weakness:

cheap carpet, slow pickup when air is on.

This car is very quiet and very roomy inside. The problem I had is three days after I had this car the battery is dead.I brought it to the dealer they replace a new one. This car is slow when the air conditioner is turned on. It takes a lot of power from this car.it is very sluggish before 3000rpm but after that this car could run. the carpet is this car is very cheap quality. The doors is a problem too, it is hard too close it right on first time it takes a second time to close it right.

Strength:

Engine and mechanical components have given no problems.

Weakness:

Air conditioning weak, paint on plastic parts tend to peel off, wind noise on highway driving, my opinion is that it is not a very attractive vehicle

This car has probably been one of the least troubling from a mechanical standpoint. I have done nothing but routine maintenance. Body integrity on the other hand has been a nightmare. Plastic parts from hubcaps to mirrors have had the paint peel off on a regular basis. Seats are uncomfortable on long trips for me( I am 6"6" and weigh 220 lbs), but smaller family members have no problems. Radio (w/cassette & CD) works well but wind noise on highway makes enjoying music difficult. The rating reflects my personal experience, it may be a better car for a smaller person.

Strength:

The 2000 model has an attractive blend of body features from more expexsive cars, such as, 500 series Benz (side), 300 series BMW (rear), and a Lexus-like front end. It is quiet, powerful, and affordable for the average car buyer. No trouble putting children into rear car seats. Strong enough air conditioner for Texas summer heat.

Weakness:

Terrible radio in the XL. It is either too loud or quiet with poor receiver reception. Rear door squeaks. Car purchased with 13 miles on OD, but starting to notice body panel shifting (built in Kentucky). Premature tire wear and hard to keep expansive dash area dust-free. Location of oil filter spills oil down front of engine block during oil change.

I paid 25,500 for the XL and would recommend paying the extra three-grand for the XLS edition. The AC cools the interior down quickly without losing engine torque.

Hopefully, Toyota will address the minor quality issues in future model years.

Strength:

Styling, quiet operation, overall refinement, stereo and room.

Weakness:

Visor on the sunroof holds water (Gulf States Toyota Product).

Paid $28,500 for an XLS (Pkg 6 with Sunroof). Love this car. Completely blows away the ES300 in my mind (especially for the price). Would compare it not to midsize sedans but Luxury sedans. Power is great (top speed in excess of 130 (so they say))and the refinement and serenity inside this car is unbelievable.

Must also comment on the stereo (JBL with 6 disk in dash) is awesome. You can hear every chord of a guitar, every key of the piano and it does not overpower you with too much bass. Excellent sound system for most kinds of music.
