Model Reviewed: Legacy LSi Wagon, 2l2L, AWD-AT

Strength:

Balanced and responsive handling. Reliable. Consistent. Good-looking too. VERY enjoyable to drive, especially when dusting cruising kids who don't expect a wagon to zip around them. :) And oh yeah, the AWD absolutely parties when you have good tires (mine are currently Bridgestone Potenza RE71s)-- no hydroplaning, no slip, nothing. Owns the pavement. LSi is also top of the line in '95-- *very* nice amenities.

Weakness:

AWD sensitivity to tire size differences (well hey, can't have it all). Cup holders-- yuck. Doesn't accelerate extremely well up even slight hills. ABS feels like it wants to shove my foot back through the rear windshield when it kicks in. Parts cost too danged much.

Paid $16,500 used in 8/98 @ 51227 miles. Would absolutely recommend it. Had one major issue-- pinion bearing failure in the rear diff (replaced at 83000-ish miles). Too many electronics to go bad (like all other cars) so I'd recommend purchase of an extended warranty. Have had issues in all the "known" places, oil seals (common '94 -'95 on this engine), ghost-locking power door locks, sticking ABS relay, an alternator recall. Had a tranny wiring harness seal go bad, requiring replacement. Outside of these little items I've driven my Subie into the ground and it just keeps on going. The only time it ever became uncooperative was when I (oops) disconnected a rather critical air hose. Overall, I love the thing, and I'm keeping this car forever. When I buy something new, it will sit *next* to my Subie in the garage.

GMC Jimmy, Honda Accord Sedan, Toyota Camry, '99 Outback wagon. The '99 is basically the same thing w/bigger engine & the jacked-up suspension, handled just as well, the engine was definitely an improvement. The other vehicles mentioned-- hated the GMC (bouncy bouncy squishy shocks). Had to respect the Honda's engine and tranny. The Camry just plain feels nice. But the Subie-- while other vehicles have their strong points, the Subarus just have a balanced feel to them that the other cars don't seem to have. Don't know how to describe it... other cars felt *nice*, the Legacy feels *right*.

Strength:

Has a lot of pep for a little car. When I first got the car I would peel out by accident many times. Good gas mileage and seems to just keep on going.

Weakness:

Seats aren't very comfortable, don't like the radio.

Definately a great little car. Great under wet and snowy conditions. At 190,000 miles right now and hope it'll just keep on going. No problems with it yet, I'd definately reccommend it.

Strength:

handling ( well balanced car); cornering; feel of security because of awd

Weakness:

clutch take up not smooth; engine throttle hesitates;more power needed for such a heavy car; so so milage; requires medium grade gas; side mirrors do not bend inward; cost cutting clock/radio combination.

Car bought new, good dealership, car has been a disappointment overall; unlike the car I previously owned ( a Mazda 626 GT), the Legacy is not an endearing car. Maybe the lack of guts and other flaws (note below) make it so.

Model Reviewed: Legacy 2.5 GT Limited

Strength:

All wheel drive system is flawless in the automatic. The power/torque split is 90 front/10 rear under normal conditions. The automatic transmission actually senses acceleration and braking and directs power to the rear under acceleration and to the front under braking. AMAZING. Launch this car into a corner and step on the accelerator and you actually feel the rear wheels kick in. I've never had so much fun in the rain and snow and I don't think I could go back to a 2 wheel drive car again. Nice aggresive look in the 1999 model with the high spoiler and hood scoop. I don't like the 2000 model as of yet because it looks so subdued compared to the 1999.

Weakness:

Simple Interior. Bad cup holder position. Needs more power from the 2.5 Litre 4 cyl. Tons of torque, not enough high RPM grunt though. 6 Cylinder version due out in 2001. Slight clunking from the steering column under hard cornering. Subaru cannot seem to fix this. I've heard about this clunking from many other owners as well.

I paid 36K Canadian dollars for this car and love it to pieces. All Wheel Drive cannot be beat in any weather. Excellent handling due to low centre of gravity and AWD. Plus, Subaru's all wheel drive system in their automatic transmission vehicles is by far the most technologically advanced and safe. You should read about it. It's called the 4EAT transmission. It actually reacts before the wheels begin to slip by sensing pedal depression speed, wheel speeds, braking, cornering and acceleration and places the power to the areas of the car that need it the most according to the drivers inputs. Quite amazing actually.
Highly recommended over Accord and Camry. Any family looking for a 4 door vehicle with an extremely safe record and the added safety of AWD should consider this car over Accord or Camry. Even reliablility tests show that the Subaru is ranked right up there with these.

Love it, Love it, Love it.

Accord, Camry, Taurus seem to have more for-thought in the interior but, none of those come with All Wheel Drive. And the price is comparable.

Strength:

Pretty good performance, Does gravel roads well until you run out of revs on corners. Great sound with performance exhaust. Motor just keeps on going, sold mine with 230,000kms on clock. Easy to work on, very straight forward, strong and safe bodies. Plenty of room and tows well.

Weakness:

COST OF PARTS! Parts are about the same as Porsche parts. Driveshaft is 2800$!!!!! You cant get one custom made and chromed and spend that much.
Fuel pump and water pump worth more than my sisters honor. All parts are huge costs unless they have pirate copies available, then parts price are tolerable. (ie subaru is ripping us off when they can get away with it)
The manual could rev lower at 100km, and give better gas milage.

I paid 6000$ for mine and loved it until a few parts were needed. 700$ to have head gaskets done is criminal(with me taking out the motor myself.)
Its a safe and owner friendly car until the bills start coming in. Found that they are to easy to push, I was getting only 5000kms out of a set of good tires, wahoo!
I liked it alot but got bored with AWD as its to easy to drive fast.
As a car it was great but value for money just went out the window.
I would not recommend any subaru due to the way the company charges for its parts.

Strength:

AWD system, good handling, ergonomics

Weakness:

acceleration, braking power, paint chips easily

Bought new for $19,500. This is a 30th anniversary sedan, has 2.2L automatic, ABS, sunroof, etc. Car does not accelerate well unless you let the auto shift around 4000+ rpm and braking is weak. Handling is better than most main stream family sedans. Front seats need more lumbar support, rear seating is decent. Subaru is still playing catch-up, not as refined as Camry or Accord, but the AWD makes up for a lot of it, especially in snow/rain.

Strength:

Handling, appearance, utility.

Weakness:

MORE POWER...Let's see a turbo.

I paid $300 over dealer cost, got a $1000 free canoe from a Canoecopia promotion, got a free Extended Maintainance Contract & a free Yakima rack from an IMBA promotion. We were looking for a 2001 Forester S, but nobody was dealing on them & I refuse to pay MSRP so I got the Outback. The Outback is a much better vehicle & ends up being cheaper than a similarly equipped Forester.

The car is great & the service I've received from Subaru of America is excellent. I've already had the car in a snow storm & the handling is excellent, better than anything I've ever driven. On any surface the AWD noticeably improves handling. Also the ABS worked flawlessly in the snowy conditions. What I don't understand is why doesn't everybody make cars like this (ABS, AWD)? Think of how many accidents this would prevent.

Gas mileage is excellent for an AWD. I've been getting 25-26 mpg consistently. Visability is excellent since this car sits higher than most midsized cars. The 5-speed is a blast to drive, but shifting is a bit notchy.

I really appreciate the long list of standard features. The only options I had to add was the All-Weather package (a must in snow country) & premium sound. Beats the heck out of haggling with a sleazy salesman over floor mats & mud flaps like I've had to do with other vehicles (Dodge).

I also have a lot of respect for Subaru's affiliation with the Internation Mountain Biking Association. Their support for the mountain biking community is greatly appreciated.

My only gripe is a car with this much handling capability could use more power. If Subaru would bring their turbo to America it would make for some excellent competition vs. an Audi Quattro.

We're so pleased that we're thinking of trading my wife's Civic in for an Outback Sport.

Handling and acceleration is good. Cabin space is comfy for everyone and the boot is a healthy size. The standard stereo(cd, cassete, radio) provides excellent sounds. My friends luv it and it has served me well.

Weakness:

Better milage would be good but it's in about the same range as most 2L turbos.

17k with alarm and immobiliser. Of course, if the petrol costs and maintence aren't too high for you then it owns. =)
