hard to shift when cold, dashboard makes noises when hot or cold I would definitely recommend this car. I bought it new in 1993 and other than a new water pump the car has never let me down for 120000 miles. For the price it is a great vehicle. The Subaru dealer has seen some of them with 300000 miles and still going. The engine is flat and makes plenty of power for a 4-cylinder. Don't be afraid to buy Subaru and they are safe! Strength:
Durability -- I have about 420,000km on this car and it just keeps going strong. I haven't had to replace any major components and I drive the car hard. The acceleration, cornering and braking are exceptional.
Weakness:
Gas consumpution is so-so, rust is a constant fight and the styling is a bit bland. These things are/were an unbelievable value. Even thought it's getting kind of old, would make a great student car. I can't reccomend these things enough!!! Similar Products Used: 2001 Outback -- way more refined but not nearly as much fun |

Legacy "Touring" Wgn.
Strength:
Factory Turbocharged, SVX suspension. It SCREAMS!! It goes anywhere, any time, rain, sleat, snow, ice, -10 to 140 degrees (death valley). Ultra stable, responsive and reliable. As a Portland Firefighter, it's been my IDEAL car. It's gotten me to work in weather you "civilians" would have NEVER considered going out in.
Weakness:
For me, this Legacy "Touring" Wagon has been perfect and problem free. Thanks Subaru. If you can "find" one, BUY it, don't think about it, JUST DO IT !! Subaru was "Light Years" ahead of the competition when they offered the Legacy "Touring" Sedan & Wagon in 1993, but "Blundered Miserably" when it was discontinued after 1994. In my humble opinion, whoever had THAT "brain fart" should have been fired on the spot (before implimintation), with forfiture of ALL benefits & pension. I simply CAN'T say enough good things about this car. IT IS the "Diamond in the rough", the "Oasis in the desert". If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought two...say-la-vee! And all I do is regular maintenance (ie, regular fluid changes, tire rotation, scheduled check-ups, wash & wax, etc.), nothing special. What an incredible car. I often joke with my friends by telling them that "this is the car I'm going to be buried in". Like one other person said, "if and when I buy another car, it will be parked in the garage NEXT TO my SUBARU". Anybody know of a 1993 or '94 Subaru Legacy "Touring" Wagon (factory tourbocharged) For Sale? Hhhmmmm? This is a "10" star car. If you're young or old, male or female, single or married, with or without children, this "would have" been the perfect car for you. Please excuse the "past tense", but THESE cars are almost impossible to find. Once owned, they're (almost) never sold. Good Luck! Similar Products Used: Volvo, Audi, BMW (I went through a phase), assorted American, although I did have a '76 Chev 3/4 ton 4X4 (ground-up rebuild) that was pretty incredible but HARD on my back. My '93 Legacy "Touring" Wagon is the finest car I've ever owned and truely, in a class by itself. |

Legacy Brighton Wagon
Strength:
Bought this car 2nd hand when it had done 65,000 miles. Handles real great, especially when there is water and snow on the road. Simply will not aquaplane, and road-holding in up to 3" to 4" of snow is pretty good. Can handle long distances at high speeds, non-stop, without problems. Have put in 30,000+ miles in 21 months. Given me 24.5 miles per gallon, 87 octane, with car loaded with 5 people, packed with baggage (station wagon!), A/c on all the time and speeds too high to mention here.
Weakness:
Somewhat underpowered; hence low pickup. I have the 2.2 litre engine. I feel a 2.6 litre is a minimum must. I have an auto transmission - the shifting could be smoother. Could suffer minor oil leaks from valve cover, timing cover or oil pump. Expensive to repair due to high labor component (parts could be under $60, but labor will take total bill to $600). Lower milage than Camry or Accord. Bought 2nd hand when 2.5 years old when it had done 65,000 miles. Paid $9300 at dealer. Have driven 30,000 miles since then in 21 months in all sorts of weather a climates ranging from -20F to 100F, rain and snow. Never let me down; EXTREMELY reliable. Have had to change oil seals at gear pump due to leak; otherwise no problem. Similar Products Used: Somewhat smaller in size than a Camry or Accord and gives lower mileage, but offers infinitely better roadholding; the low-slung chassis also adds to stability. |

Strength:
The wagon is nice suprisingly, warms up in the cold quick, feels like it handles really well, we put these soft covers on our seats and they are really comfortable on long trips, and it gets good gas mileage. The stereo system isn't bad either when you wanna bump
Weakness:
Its really slow, and it takes a little bit for the engine to kick in when you slam on the gas, and although its the nicest looking wagon out there...its still a wagon Its a good car, and reliable too Similar Products Used: Jetta, Cadillac, Civic, Talon |

Strength:
The station wagon is relatively quiet, smooth, and refined. Handling is excellent and AWD is flawless. City driving is perfect.
Weakness:
Highway passing sometimes takes some preparation (a little lag with the automatic transmission). Fuel economy could be better, but I suppose that is the tradeoff for AWD. We were just in an accident last night. The car held up very well being rear ended by a car traveling at 15 mph. The bumper is caved a little but we were both fine. I have the utmost confidence in this car's safety, both for bad weather handling and now in accidents. In my opinion, this feature is most important when choosing a new car. A few tenths of a second in 0-60 accel. don't matter as much as car safety. I would recommend to anyone who has some winter driving in their future. For the drier climes, the Passat might be preferable. Similar Products Used: Test drove Passat, Outback. Passat was slicker and quicker, but at the time did not offer 4WD. Reliability was the deciding factor to choose Subaru. |

It's AWD system. Clearence from the road. Smooth shape. And very quiet engine.
Weakness:
Needs more power. The best car I have every had. Run's pretty smooth. It is the best to go for the trip or something. It's AWD system is great. When you want to go fishing, or just for fun on the outback roads it goes better than any SUV. I have tested it in every possible situation. A lot of times it didn't pass because of it's wheelbase. I got stuck in the mud and couldn't do anything. Had to ask my friend who has Outback to pull me out. Similar Products Used: Domingo, Loyal, the old type Legacy |

Strength:
The best part about this car is being in second gear, coming out of a sharp corner and PUNCHING IT - the traction is amazing (makes your inner ear go buggy too). Four wheel drive kicks ass in the slushy, icy michigan winter. The seats are the most comfortable that I have ever sat in. Plenty of punch off the line with a manual tranny - havent tried the auto. Well damped ride, controlled not stiff - not bouncy at all, soaks up all the crappy roads in Michigan quite well. You can really get into some fun slip and slide on dirt roads with this thing.
Weakness:
Clutch is kinda grabby - you get used to it, 2nd to 3rd shifts can get notchy if really rushed, and the dash cupholders obscure the heater controls. I have had this car for 3 years and have not had ANY mechanical problems whatsoever - what a pleasant experience. This car really feels SOLID. It also gives you the feeling that you can get through anything. A unique driving experience rare in the auto world. Once you go all wheel drive, you can't go back.......
