Handling, style, comfort.
Weakness:
Could use a little more HP, bad location of cup holders. Overall an excellent car. Stunning performance in ALL road & weather conditions. Drives through bad conditions like a heavy duty SUV - even better in some instances. Great style and utility. Oh yea, try getting all these features with any other manufacturer and you'll easily spend $7k more... Similar Products Used: Acura integra, Dodge Raider, Plymouth Colt Vista! |

Subaru Legacy wagon
Strength:
-All Wheel Drive -Reliable, peppy engine -Lots of room
Weakness:
-Minor but constant oil leaks -Axles (cv joints) wear out about every 60k miles ($200 to replace both) The best car I've ever owned. Does few things great, but everything well. Better in the snow & rain than any car I've driven (except Sub. Outback)The AWD is fantastic. The engine itself has never had any problem, and I'm now at 215,000 miles! I got this w/70k miles and have only done work to replace the clutch (twice so far) the alternator, a window switch, and CV joints (2x so far). That's about $1,500 in repairs over 6 years. So thats about $1k for every 1k miles. If you can spare a couple hundred dollars a year for maintenance and predictible repairs, it'll go forever. legacy wagon AWD
Strength:
AWD is excellent for skiers, I've driven through all types of snow (1.5 foot powder, sheer ice, 8in slush, you name it..)and I have practically bald tires! What are chains? Never herd of them! I've found the engine to be plenty fine, without giving up its good gas milage. It has plenty of low end torque in first gear, I usually start out in 2nd for a smoother acceleration and still have plenty of power to work with!(if you have a 5 sp mt don't even think of doing this, torque converter in AT uses fluid instead of physical contact so you can gene more lowend without wearing out parts) the 90/10 front rear power split makes for a fun ride in`snow or dirt roads. Take a fast corner and slam on the gas when you start turning, the center dif will quickly send power to the rear wheels giving you a good swinging launch into a power slide (4 wheel drift) without using the e-brake.
Weakness:
-Sorry kiddies you can't peel out with AWD, even on snow. -THE AT SHIFT FROM 1ST TO SECOND IS USUALLY HARSH IN COLDER WEATHER. THIS IS NOT GOING TO HELP YOUR TRANNY LAST AS LONG AS THE ENGINE! -ANYONE WHO OWNS AN AT SUBBIE SHOULD READ THIS IF THEY WISH TO SAVE THEIR TRANSMISSION! -YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE 1ST GEAR, EVER! MANUAL BUTTON THEY PLACED ON THE SHIFTER FORCES THE TRANNY TO STAY IN THE GEAR YOU SELECT! IF YOU PUT THE SHIFTER INTO 3RD + MANUAL SELECTED THE CAR WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO 2ND WHEN STARTING FROM A STAND STILL, THEN POP THE LEVER BACK INTO 4TH AT HIGHER SPEEDS! YOU SHOULD ONLY USE 1ST WHEN YOU NEED THAT EXTRA LOW END GRUNT! 2ND HAS PLENTY OF STARTING POWER FOR NORMAL USE, YOUR TRANNY WILL THANK YOU IN THE LONG RUN! -Plan on getting soaked if its raining and the wiper pushes all the water onto your lap if your window is slightly open. I'm now convinced that all vehicles should have optional AWD. I'll never go back to 2wd, although my old '83 saab 900s is by a large margin the best snow going 2wd ever made. The subbie gets better gas milage than any 4wd vehicle out there if you're conservative on the throttle. I've found that the legacy's AT is very clunky when it's even the slightest bit cold. Especially the shift from 1st to 2nd. If you take care of it like I do, these cars should outlive the owner. Thrashing these vehicles puts them on par with fords (and most other lousy car makers) when it comes time for repairs. Although a brand spankin new ford explorer will cost more to keep on the road than a well maintained subbie with 200,000+ miles on it. Similar Products Used: Toyota wagon, reliable but POS in snow. Subaru Legacy L Sedan
Strength:
ride, comfort, all-wheel drive handling and reliability
Weakness:
could use the horsepower of the wrx, although the 3.0 h6 is offered, it is quite pricey for a legacy depending on the area you live in, resale on a Subaru can be quite low This is my 5 Subaru, and I'm only 26 years old. The only other vehicle I've owned was a Datsun Pickup which was great too. My father owns an auto repair shop, and I worked for him for over 5 years. So, I have driven nearly every manufacturer of vehicles known, from Porsche to Acura and Mercedes. Subaru's still come out on top for me. I have owned a '82 GLF, '86 GL-10 Turbo, '85 RX and a '92 Legacy wagon. When my '92 got totalled in an accident, a new Subaru was all I wanted and when test driving the new model, I was sold right then and there. This newest Subaru of mine is by far the smoothest car I have driven. Crusing down the freeway at over 90 mph, the car feels solid and I feel safe. The handling is also great. Having worked for my father, who has been a Subaru mechanic for over 20 years, I do know that if maintained regularly, these cars last for ever. He has one customer with a '78 GL with over 465,000 miles on the original motor. Note to owners: make sure you do not over heat your Subaru. If the car does over heat, the cylinder heads will almost always crack, and since its a boxer motor, and if you have to replace both sides, you're talking a pretty penny to do so. Legacy Wagon
Strength:
Spacious, economical, extremely reliable. AWD allows to drive almost anywhere.
Weakness:
I am seeing indications of decay forming near the fender wells. It seems to start and progress rapidly. Cup holder location interfers with operation of fan and radio controls. I actually purchased this car with the intent to give it to my son. However, I have been using 99.9% of the time. I was impressed with the quality and features this vehicle has. I have used it for hauling, traveling and light off road. I have found it to have a comfortable ride and plenty of room for it's size. I get 25 mpg all day long during the warmer months, and slightly less during the frigid season. Have had no trouble since I purchsed the wagon with 118k miles on it, and now it has 138k. I haven't put a nickle for any repairs to date. So easy to change the oil and filter due to it's close to the front location. Easy car to own and maintain. Just get in and go. Strength:
Sound body, good acceleration, smooth ride. No major headaches.
Weakness:
I had to change the alternator twice within a year. Also have troubles with dashboard "warning"lights being reset. Had some pretty bad seal leaks that kind of happended all at once. This has been a pretty reliable car. It makes me feel safe to drive with two little kids and still have lots of trunk room. I have 80,000 miles and just changed the timing belt and had all seals replaced as was the recommendation. I feel like I'm driving a new car. Similar Products Used: Suburu 89 wagon |

Strength:
Subaru reliability, a competent engine, AWD, and plenty of day-to-day hauling room.
Weakness:
Anti-lock brakes are only optional and may not be available, and the engine is only just competent. Subaru makes some of the finest cars on the market today, even when used considerably. I obtained this car with about 90,000 miles on it and it still drives wonderfully. It does not burn oil, I have had no catastophic maintanance issues, and all the parts work smoothly. My only qualm is with an intermittent rattling which has only just begun to happen. My particular model is a wagon body style with AWD. When purchasing this model year Subaru (I'm not sure about more recent models,) the AWD system is different for different transmissions. With a manual transmission the front and rear wheels are continuously driven with fifty percent power to each end. When slippage occurs power can be electronically directed to the end with more traction. With the automatic transmission however, with which my own vehicle is equiped, the front wheels recieve the most driving power (about 90%) until slippage occurs, at which time power is directed to the rear wheels as well. Therefore it is not uncommon to sense the front wheels monentarily lose grip, and then feel the rear wheels kick in a moment later. I just offer this as a bit of information that may or may not effect the way you drive the vehicle. Do not expect sports-car performance if you buy this model-year legacy. The 2.2 Liter four cylinder is capable but by no means exciting. Expect to have to hold it in third gear up steeper hills. Similar Products Used: Geo Prism four-door sedan, five speed manual, FWD. |

NONE - THIS CAR IS THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I HAVE HAD HONDA, TOYOTA, BUICK, DODGE, CADILLAC - THE SUBARU BEATS THEM ALL IN ALL AREAS. Excellent car. I purchased this 4 door Legacy L. Wagon (30th Anniversary Edition) in 1999. It now has 55,000 miles and I have never had to have anything done. I have the original brakes and the car is wonderful on gas, has a huge cargo area. I can't say enough good things about this automobile!! Similar Products Used: HONDA CIVIC, TOYOTA CAMRY. |

Seats are mildly uncomfortable. Acceleration is average. Gas mileagle - 20-22 mpg. Love the car. I would buy it again next time I need a new one. Auburn Subaru was great! No hassle, no gimmick. Negotiated in 15 minutes and I got a great price. Similar Products Used: Honda Accord Honda Civic |

Strength:
I like the utility of a four wheel drive station wagon....
Weakness:
...however I would never buy a Subaru again because of the reliability issues One other big drawback is the road and wind noise which is high in this price range I purchased the car from a dealer fresh off a lease with low mileage. Overall VERY disapointed with the reliability. The car has now got 70,000 miles and to date I have had the folowing problems: - moonroof cover broke and had to be replaced - ignition broke and had to be replaced (you could remove the key and the engine would not stop!) - the hood latch rusted out to the point that the safety latch froze solid. This resulted in the hood flying up at 60mph causing several thousand dollars of damage - same with the tail gate latch, rusted to the point where it would not open and had to be replaced - had an electrical problem with the headlights and high beam indicator - total failure of the cooling system resulting in $1000 of repairs, towing and hotel bill after getting stranded in Maine. The water pump was leaking, the thermostat had to be replaced and the heater core was blocked - I have a transmission problem with third gear that looks like it might require a replacement of the transmission eventually - constant rattling of heat shields (I must have asked the dealer to fix this four times but it always comes back) Also, service at Subaru dealerships is very expensive Similar Products Used: Subaru Impreza - this car was good to me, however I didn't have it for long. One complainst was the cheap plastic hubcaps that keep falling off. I lost two in a year and they cost something like $65 t |
