Strength:

Great gas mileage Compact (if that's what you want) Handles well on the road Very fun to drive

Weakness:

I wish it had a V6, but that was my choice to buy a car with a 4 cylinder, so it's not the car's fault.

Overall this has been a great car. Zero complaints. I've done all rountine maintenance on the car and it has served me well. I'm a college student and it's perfect for me. I wouldn't recommend it for families because of the limited space. It's been a great first car for me. I just hit 75,000 miles and I've replaced a battery and that's only because my friend didn't shut the door all the way one night and the interior light ran the battery down. Great car!

Strength:

Rides nice, handles well, quiet, nice heater, not bad on gas, good looking car,I like the cd player too.

Weakness:

Somewhat underpowered, esp on hills. Electrical system is what drives me nuts. Power window motor in drivers door went not a year into my having car. Fuel pump quit 33K miles, two years into having car. It was slowly dying-needed two cranks on half-tank or less for 5 months-but still, I wound up stranded. And that was pathetic. Pontiacs should be made better than this, esp for what I am paying. What else-now the blower fan switch, which has 4 settings-doesn't work for lower two. What gives?? Another electrical screw up? Another trip to the shop. Car also scratches easily.

Great car for what it is for first year, but in past year, it has started to show the same problems others here have listed-crappy electrical system, things breaking down far earlier than they ought, etc. It could be better, lemme put it that way.

I had a '93 Cavalier, it's head gasket, hoses and water pump all went after 80K miles, somehow or other I expect the Sunfire to do the same.

Strength:

Heavy, rides well on highway and town. Comfortable car. Very bright, colorful dash. Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

ABS BRAKES. Have to have the back brakes adjusted every three months. ABS are terrible for winter driving involving heavy snow falls and icy conditins. The ABS barke system on the sunfire needs to be redesigned.

Good car, as long as you baby it. Have had mine for three years. Bought it used with 5800 kilometeres. I have babied it since I had it. Now has 53,000.00 kilometres and beginnig to leak oil, on extended trips.(700 kilometres plus trips) Drives well on highway and around town. Have had trouble with ABS brakes. Alos, now I have a tweeting sound in engine.

This was a horrible experience for my first brand new car. Actually, I had problems from the beginning. I had a horrible screaching noise coming from the windshield right after I purchased it in 1999 (that should have been the first red flag). After 2 trips to the dealership, and a special trip from an engineer from out of state they realized that they had to replace my windshield. After the windshield I had rattling problems in the car. I brought the car back to the dealership 4 times for this problem. They replaced the track for my sunroof thinking that would be the problem. Not so much. They still don't know what was causing the rattling. I had to replace my ac compressor twice and I didn't even have 60,000 miles on it. I also experienced the electrical problems with my radio as well as odometer. They had my radio out 3 different times and could never fix it. Needless to say I learned if you pounded on the top of the radio you could get your station and/or time back. Overall, the sunfire was a piece of crap and a disappointing experience. I would never recommend a sunfire or another pontiac for that matter. They may look pretty, but they have nothing to offer.

Strength:

Good factory system. Got me where I needed to go.

Weakness:

Sunroof leaked for 6 months. Back part of the front seat always came apart. Left blinker stays on inside of the car.

I purchased my sunfire in April of 2000. The car was going well until after a year that I had the car.

Strength:

Gas mileage. Smooth ride. Nice design inside and out. Smooth 5-speed. Durable interior. I am still on the original tires!

Weakness:

Stereo - sounds like someone is singing into a tin can. Probably needs tweeters. Rear brake self adjusting mechanism. Dipstick/Oil fill cap is a pain. Paint needs to be able to withstand tree sap.

I am very pleased with my Sunfire SE. I drive it daily about 80 miles round trip. The car cruises very nicely and gets on average 39 mpg (90% highway miles), about 36.5 mpg with A/C on. Reliability has been surprisingly excellent. Only problem I've experienced in the 90,000 miles I've had it is the rear brakes not self adjusting correctly, but that only cost $30 dollars. I am really surprised this car is holding up so well. Most GM products just fall apart after about 50k miles.

Strength:

rather stylish, roomy for a small car, pleasant dash design/color

Weakness:

A/C power/fuel drain, can be a little loud on the freeway

My little car has been great to me. I've only needed the routine maintenance and oil changes. The A/C definitely drains the power and fuel efficiency, but other than that, no complaints.

Strength:

Spunky 2.4 L engine. Decent on gas. Died once, but NEVER stalls. Starts like a champ even when cold.

Weakness:

Road noise. electrical problems. Major computer glitches that leave you (and your mechanic) wondering what the deal is.

This car may be decent for college student/first car. I Bought new and it's still running at 139,000 Miles. No problems for 30K miles...super-quiet engine with spunk, good looks...though a bit feminine. Then... "check engine" light appeared consistently every 15K miles with the mechanic's response of "nothing is wrong" each time. Tape player died at 30K, stereo increases volume when you attempt to turn it down. Stopped dead once (at 64K) after driving an hour on snowy expressway and miraculously came "back to life" 30 minutes later...again the mechanic's response was "nothing is wrong" and "Cannot duplicate the problem" Bogus trunk design, if you open it with snow or rain on your car and it will fall right in on your groceries!!!! Also, the cup holder is right in front of your climate controls and won't keep a thing held without the worry of coffee all over the place. Rear view mirror won't stay attached to the window after 100K miles. Sun visors do not cover areas behind rearview mirror...buy some sunglasses. Stupid map holders in the doors that you can't reach. The same intermittent ABS problems as others have listed...VERY unsafe. Radio display, day running headlights quit working at 110K. Check oil light stays on permanently for no reason since 118K. Replaced oxygen sensor at 120K Miles. misc. plastic pieces in interior have aborted themselves from their intended positions. Air compressor is singing an obnoxious and embarrassing tune...refuse to replace it since the a/c works despite the problem ($840). Passenger seat moves on it's own (very annoying). I've learned to ignore the warning lights since they are of no help. Not overly recommended because of the little annoyances, but the engine runs well at 138K.

Strength:

Reliable, inexpensive, nice look, decent space, fun to drive in a manual.

Weakness:

Weird Trunk opening, think I might be notcing the electrical problem I have read about in here (I had a suspisoius problem around 90,000 miles, where the car shut off in the middle of driving, took it to the mechanic, he couldn't find anything, hasn't happened again in the past two years.)

I bought this as my first new car, and busted teh bank to get it. I tell you what, for the money I paid for this thing, it has definatly taken care of me. I got the 5 sped manual SC, and it gets some decent Torque at high RPM's. I have spun him out at least 4 times, and had one major crash. Still using it in NYC driving, and have 130,000 miles on it. The only thing I have had to change on it besides damaged body parts from hitting things (I moed to NY from Florida, didn't know how to drive in snow) was the Alternator. And I have beat the hell out of this car. Starts every morning like a champ. Had a lady at the gas station look at it the other day and say What happened, I never seen a car on the road looking like that, was it in a fire ?!?!)Meanwhile, she was driving a Mercedes. Excellent value for the college kid or low budget buyer. Like I said, I have seven years on it, and I have beaten it to hell, and only repaired what was neccasary to get back on the road.

Strength:

nice looking car, good radio *when it works, good a/c

Weakness:

Everything! real junker after 50,000 miles. Bad mechanicals, no trade in value and many recent trips to the garage with costly on average $500 to fix!Lease it for 2 years and give it back to the dealer!

Have had car since purchased new...Babied the car, made long trips for 2 years and have been doing city mileage for last 3 years. Was a good car for about 40,000 miles. But at the 60k mile mark all heck broke lose $700+ dollars for snappped timing belt which took out the traction bar *expensive parts for so called entry level car!, numerous oil & transmission leaks, Head gasket replace, new fuel pump, bad spark plug wires, oil leaks into spark plug wells, faulty fuel injector, transmission slips, cylinder tap loud tappping from engine wants to stall must have put over 1,900$ in it in less than 10,000 miles! $395 last week and not fixed starting to run horrible, borderline unsafe. *actually taking it to the shop tomorrrow. Ok car for 1st couple of years, but needs major work around 50,000 miles. Doubt my car will make 80k Cd players ok but sometimes volume control doesn't work and when you try to turn it down it gets louder. Also clock has short and whacks out after it rains, Abs brakes hop even with michelin tires! All in all a car I wouldn't buy again! I've heard the sunfire and cavalier are being totally redesigned for 2003 let's hope GM get's it right this time.
