Strength:

Good acceleration for a GM, handling is nice, good CD player from a DELCO. The car has a lot of space in the trunk and inside the car. I just do the lub and changing the brakes one time.

Weakness:

The transmission is no so smooth and it's very hard to change the radio because of the dash.

For guys who don't have a lot of money and wanted a nice car without having to repair it. You can do a lot of things on it to make it good looking like spoiler, stripes ans a good subwoofer in the trunk ( I got 2 10'' mtx inside with a 600W RMS amplifier, the car realy sound nice)

Strength:

16" tires, stereo controls on the steering wheel, good power for a 4-banger, good clutch, roomy back seats, good stock CD player, dual exhaust, it is an underrated racer on the streets

Weakness:

very poor visibility, especially with tinted windows, very uncomfortable seats, not great gas mileage for a 4-cylinder (but who does get good gas mileage these days!!), lame cupholder near stick shift, orange dash lights, COUNTLESS REPAIRS including: new water pump, new fuel gauge, expensive tires (atleast $150 each). also there is a lot of outside noise and rattling (especially with the glove compartment)

You can get this car for a pretty descent price compared to acuras, hondas or other japanese cars in its class, but i wouldnt. despite the strengths of this car, the costly weaknesses are just to much to overcome for me. also the resale value of this car is very poor, i think because its not very popular. most people dont even know what kind of car it is when they first see it. i would have gone with an acura if i had to do it all over again. the japanese just have it all over the americans in this class because of better overall quality and resale value. BUT HEY, ATLEAST ITS NOT A HYUNDAI!

Strength:

The cars ride is fairly smooth and on par in its class. Front and back view is better than average and the aid of traction control is a big benefit for families and is not found on other cars in its class. The exterior look is not plain and stands out more than you'd expect. The glove compartment and trunk are spacious, seats fairly supportive and ride is sutle and compliant. Automatic gear shifts are smooth, though it will upshift inadvertantly like when climbing a hill. Overall a notable player in the economy car segement.

Weakness:

The engine is unresponsive to driver input. Though not the slowest in its class, the engine reacts slowly and lacks fluidness and refinement especially when compared to its import counterparts. Climate control buttons are badly placed, hard to see and reach especially if using the cupholder which virtually blocks them off. The power off designation of pushing the volume button is so sensitive that one will accidently turn off the radio during volume adjustment. Cigarette adapter is poorly place(beside the ignition), with cellphone charger in, it caused a nusience of wires across the shifter. Interior looks plain, cheap.
Handling/Ride - the car oversteers alot and hard cornering will induce significant body roll. This will remind you to slow down before entering curves. Steering is rubbery and gives little feed back to driver. To sum it up, the looks don't speak for the personality. Fit and finish is touchy. Gas milege is averge for class, don't expect civic-like returns.

If it were my my money I'd save a little more and go with Honda and Toyota. They are more nimble, responsive, reliable and sporty. They are clearly better more refined cars and the extra money justifies it.
But one on a tighter budge or pro-domestic diet the sunfire offers value, personality (looks at least)and function. I find traction control to be the biggest plus, because the prodominant buyer for this car will likely to be moving kids around all season long. But let me suggest this if you are leaning towards this car. A cavalier is exactly the same car except for the exterior looks and is cheaper. People looking in this class might be interested in that note.

Though the japenese outclass the sunfire here, its lower price and sporty appeal derserve attention in this class. Of the domestic competition, maily Ford Focus and Neon, even Korean additions, this car fairs well.

Strength:

You can tell it's a member of the Pontiac family because it looks like a baby Firebird. I constantly receive compliments on it, and more than a few have said it looks like a Saab Turbo from the rear. It has plenty of power and handles well. I'm also getting great gas mileage.

Weakness:

It's noisy and has its fair share of squeaks and rattles, far more than my last convertible (a '91 Mazda Miata), but less than the one I owned before that ('69 Olds Delta 88). The GM factory stereo cassette with equalizer is a major disappointment. I'm planning on upgrading to a GM/Delco CD player as soon as I can find one. I also had to replace a coil pack about a month after I bought the car. The shifter feel could also be better.

If you're in the market for a front-wheel drive convertible, the Sunfire/Cavalier convertibles are great bargains. They're inexpensive to operate, look great, go fast, and get decent gas mileage. And they're far cheaper than either the Sebring or the Eclipse, which are about the only other front wheel drive ragtops on the market right now.

'95 Ford Contour. The Sunfire is the first GM car I've owned since 1987. I switched to Ford in the 80's because GM couldn't build a quality automobile to save its life during that period of time. I'm cautiously optimistic that they're starting to build good cars again.

2.3L 150hp Quad 4 is doing well after 92,000 miles getting ready for my first tune up at 100,000 miles.

Weakness:

went thru 5 brake changes. always a bumpy ride from day 1. the front wheel drive tears up the front tire too quickly even when checking the tire pressure and rotating the tires every 3000 to 4000 miles. I'm on my 3rd set already. my 2nd set where general tires and they are the worst tires ever made. I switched to BF Goodrich touring T/A's and they hold up alot better.

If you buy a Sunfire make sure you get the 150hp engine. the 120 hp engine is pure garbage and has alot of problems. The 150 hp is a good strong engine after 92,000 thousand miles I have only changed the air filter 3 times and nothing else, with the exception of oil and oil filter. A good tune up will keep this car running for a good long time. If you like sporty looking small cars that are cheap used cars get one.

Strength:

This car has a lot of strengths for one it performence better then most rice burning Japnese cars. A lot of people look at my car and think it is slow, then they drive in it. This car has betten a lot of supp'd up cars. There is a group of kids in my school that have these Honda's that they treat like thier baby's, they spend thousands of dollars on making them fast and I can still beat them in a race with my stock Sunfire. This car also handles great. It has a great sound and realy sounds like a race car. If you want a car that performs this one is yours.

Weakness:

There are a lot of rattles in this thing I don't know where they come from. The top speed limiter kicks in to soon, this makes it hard to show these other Honda boys what this thing can do.

This car is a great buy if you want something that can perform. I think these other reviews from the other people saying their Sunfires aren't fast should drive a GT it is bar-none faster than the other models. I think this car has a good body to work on and a good engine to modify, so you can make it in to a bonafide race car if that is your type of thing. If you want a car that hauls for a 4-banger this thing will knock your socks off.

Strength:

Love the looks, definitely. Mine's red. Acceleration is incredible. I'm impressed with the steering, it was either that or my driving skills that saved my ass a few times. It corners pretty good I think, I have yet to hear the tires squeal, and I've taken some hard corners, believe me. A/C is good, kicks in really quick, heater is good too (people have to realize that you can't get hot air until the engine warms up, duh)
If you're a good manual driver, shifting and clutch are both smooth and easy, but not ideal for hard shifting, needs a performance clutch and shift-kit for that.

Weakness:

True, the cupholder up front is kinda dumb sittin in front of the shifter, but if you take a look, there's a pulldown twin cupholder right behind the console, and if you're not paralyzed, easily accessible.
Everything is functional in this car, haven't had problems with anything.

I LOVE my car, straight up. I've had it for exactly one year, and no problems yet, just maintain it well. Something goes wrong? the warranty will cover it. I like imports, but the main reason I got this car was because I wanted to show all my friends that there's a car on the domestic side that can keep up, and we are all impressed with this car's performance. It's cheaper than a Civic SiR and Integra GS-R, but just as fast. It may not have that awesome Japanese car reputation, but it measures up quite well. Another thing, we've all seen souped-up Civics, Preludes, Integras, VWs, but have you ever seen a souped-up Sunfire GT? :) I have a custom spoiler (like the IROC-Z spoiler), twin chrome Borla exhaust tips, 17" Konig Impact rims on 40 series rubber, Nitrous kit, some engine mods, and ground effects.
these are some cars that I remember beating BEFORE these mods:
1991 Camaro Z28
1993 Ford Probe GT
1997 Acura Integra GS
1998 Honda Prelude SH
1995 Ford Mustang GT (on the highway, but after 180km/hr, he passed me)
If you don't believe me, fine, but I was in the car at these times, I couldn't believe some of these races that I won.
Bottom line, Sunfire GTs are REALLY fast, probably thanks to a close gear ratio or something
If you're young, and want a fast ride, that isn't too expensive, GET THIS CAR!!

1997 Grand Prix GT - Again, another car in another class, good car, but a car that mine can smoke in 2nd gear prob. $17,500–used w/85,000kms
