Strength:

I like the gas mileage, handling, styling and the performance.

Weakness:

drivers side floor mat gets stuck under clutch pedal and then the gears cannot be shifted properly. Ashtry/cup holder is simply bad engineering. The drivers seatbelt return spring is becoming a tad slack ( 60000 miles ).
The manual transmission packed it in ? The windshield wiper motor and assy has been replaced twice ( or so they say ) and it has shown that strange wiggle again.

I reccomend the Pontiac Sunfire heartily. I have received service for some problems at a couple of GM service centres. The service was performed. I am absolutely and admittedly unforgiving for the service I received from the "auto body" department at ""Lansdowne Pontiac Chev Olds in Richmond British Columbia"". I will clarify this again the mechanical end of the dealership has performed flawlessly, the "body shop" has given me the worst experience in my buying life. I don't want to get into all the nitty dirty details however I must state that the body shop manager must have been having a personal crisis or something because he flat out lied to me 5 times before I advised him that the car was being removed by me from his shop. The final straw was after he denied the overspray on the side and top of my car as well as inside the door jamb he denied the fact that there was a dent on the side of my car. He blamed the whole problem on the rockships on my windshield. I realized this man is unfit for active duty haha. He called the police and lied again. I advised the police of his actions and the cop was not impressed with his story. It was very obvious that he was lying to me and the cop. The cop advised me to sue him and requested I not be alone with him as he may be unpredicatable. The body shop manager was acting very strangely and then blaming it all on me. Those are the actions of a man who cannot be trusted and should not be allowed to hold any position of authority. Who knows how many people he has screwed and then twisted the facts around to suit his weird mind. I am not exagerating I am simply stating the facts. I suspect that he realized he had a situation on his hands and that he figured he would have a little fun with me the look in his eyes was one of amusement a definate twinkle was in his eye. I called GM Service and the in their special way ignored all that I told them and sidestepped the issue acting as if I received service and that I should be satisfied with that. The actions of the body shop manager were completely understated and then untimately ignored. That Pontiac/ GM is precisely why I have lost much respect for your organization. I could not be given the respect I deserve as a person never mind all that customer is right junk, I simply expect the basic rights I am entitled to as a person, it is this basic respect which i did not receive in communication with the representatives(manager) at GM service ( somewhere ) and as a result I will like many other consumers will remember that in the future. In closing I add this, Mr body shop manager guy with the long unpronouncable name "YOU ARE A CRAZED MAN / YOU SUCK "
For the dealership manager thanks for dragging the idiot away however i deserved an apology and one was not received. For GM Service that is going to cost the organization just as much as it cost me, when I feel better about the lack of respect I received it will be the time I have appeased the sore spot left by GM and the snotty babbling lady who handled the calls. Nice car GM the body shop manager should be reprimanded and the phone policies need be reviewed.

I have also driven a Sunfire 4 door and 2 door SE both were the reason I purchased the GT. Other Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Ford, Honda, Toyota and Dodge/Plymouth models have been driven. I personally enjoy the Sunfire GT as I do use it for extended highway touring and that is what the car excels at. Mountain passes = goodbye most of the other cars I see they all pass me on the downhills and then there I go again cruise control and all passen em on the uphills and then when they need to pull over at the rest areas, I see'em crooking and straightening their sore cramped rattled bodies. Flat out the suspension on the Sunfire Gt is absolutely great for highway touring. Yes the car is not as quiet as a Cadillac however it doesn't cost as much either. The Sunfire Gt is a great car for what is intended for and that is grand touring.

Sporty look, pretty good stereo. Best car on its price-range. Havent had a problem with it since purchase.

Weakness:

I have a 2.2L engine and would have like for it to be more powerful (im working on adding somethings that would boost the HP to 135, which is pretty good for that car) 115hp in this days is nothing. A friend of mine has the GT 150hp and the difference is pretty big, so if you have the extra money go for the 2.4L.
When you go on the highways the air sounds as if you had a door or window partially open.

I would recommend the 2.2L Sunfire if you where like me a college student on a very small budget, its the best car out there for the price. Got mine at 12,995. Would have like to get the GT but it was out of range economically, if you could go get the GT.
After this one im going after the Celica, hopefully i have graduated and could afford this little baby.

Strength:

Great look with the sporty spoiler. Red catches a lot of attention. Proved very safe for side impact. My husband was hit by a speeding BMW and walked away. Frankly, we were surprised!

The gas mileage is great, especially since our gas is approximately $2.35 US per gallon. It's roomy interior is great for carrying passenger, although 3 in the backseat is a sqeeze. The trunk has lots of room and the cargo net is a lifesaver for protecting small items.

Weakness:

The cupholder, of course! The middle console squeaks with even the smallest amount of pressure (resting an arm on it). I still don't like the window controls in the middle console although I thought I'd get used to it. The rear passenger window always seems a threat to break when used. The driver side speakers cut in and out - mostly out.
The suspension is horrible! We feel every damn bump in the road!
Ever since we bought it, there's been a "clunking" that seems linked to the braking system. We've had it looked at by three different shops and no one can find the problem. It's loud and annoying - even passengers notice it, but it doesn't seem to affect the car's performance.
The rear seat doesn't lie flat at all when put down for more cargo space. The passenger seat doesn't line up with the door very well when moved back for more leg room. It's easier to get in and out of the car if you don't mind sacrificing comfort.
The red backlit dash seemed cool at first, now it's just annoying and harsh. Dashboard warning lights sporatically come on and we have to pull over, turn off the car, and restart it to get them to turn off - none have ever proven to be a valid warning.

Personally, I don't like having a "dime-a-dozen" car. It seems like everybody and their dog have a Sunfire! I'll get something more unique in my next vehicle.

Overall, the car's been reliable mechanically. Maybe that's just because it was in a severe accident and things were fixed in the shop before they became a problem...?

After proving itself very safe in my husband's accident with a BMW, we thought we'd buy another Sunfire. We've changed our minds as we've looked around. There's much better, more reliable cars out there for just a little more money that offer the same features and more. We want more power! For being a "sports car", it was quite disappointing to be our-accelerated by family sedans. The suspension is our biggest complaint!! It's been reliable so far, but we have a sinking feeling that things will start breaking very soon.

I thought we'd buy another Sunfire after it proved so safe in the accident, but as we've looked around, we've found many other cars with more features, better power, and only slightly more money. This is a great car if you don't plan on having it forever, but look around if you want something you can depend on for many years.

Similar Products Used:

1997 Ford Taurus - felt like a boat on the road compared to the sportier Sunfire. Floated and didn't have the same acceleration or gas mileage.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am - also very floaty. Horrible gas mileage! Huge blind spots. The backseat passengers sat lower than the driver - weird! Didn't feel like a more luxurious car compared to the Sunfire.

Looks are the first eye-grabber. One of my freinds nicknamed it the "Baby Firebird" since is looks like a Firebird in an embryonic state. Another friend nicknamed my car the "Demon car" with it's black paintjob and the red intereor gauges. The engine has a nice kick to it. Good handling, nice gas mileage, and a sunroof to boot make this a good overall value. All In all i was most impressed with the car.

Weakness:

First of all, I wish it did not have the speed governer. Not like i'd want to blow out my engine, but i have fun at stoplights when i'm next to a honda/accura/jetta that is leaking rice and just want to blow them away. Headroom is also an issue--if they had an option to lower the seats it would be nice. I also wish that it came in a T-top. Lastly, with all of the aftermarket turbo units made for it, i wish GM would make a Turbo unit stock for this car that wouldn't blow out the engine (See also: Sunbird 2000le)

First off, comparing it to the aformentioned cars:
The only thing I wish the sunfire had that the lemans does is the ability to raise/lower the seats.
This car totally outclasses the shadow in every aspect imaginable.
The Talon beat the sunfire out in power, but not in drivability. The sunfire had more room and has a bit better handling. The sunfire could easily out-power the Talon IF it only had a turbo unit for it. They do sell aftermarket ones, but I think, like i said, that GM should offer one--especially on the GT models.
All in all i was most impressed with this car--despite the negative-sound of this review. I'm glad i bought it and would buy it again if i had the oppourtunity.
