I would have rated this car a "Good value" and "I'd buy again" if it were not for today's gas prices.

Weakness:

Gas mileage!
I've already replaced 3 hubs which have the bearing and ABS sensors built in.
The air ventilation fan assembly has been replaced.
My transmission is starting to make some interesting noices from start and when going from reverse to forward.
You can't open the trunk if the car is really wet otherwise a bunch of pooled water spills onto you and into the trunk.
Way too many electronic gizmos to fail.

With a few small exceptions, this car has been quite decent. The power from the 3.8L is impressive and surprised me a little at first (I was used to driving a Tempo & a Colt). Passing on the highway has never been so easy. Surprisingly the fit and finish of the car is quite good and the paint has been decent. I bought the car in 2003 with 50000KM and it now has 120000. The front and rear sport trim is a bit of a nuisance during Ottawa winters because it's too low. In fact, I've ended up ripping off a chunk of the trim below the front bumper when it caught on a snowplow ridge in front of my driveway.

Plenty of power for the daily commute. Reliable and great looking!

Weakness:

low ground clearance, I get stuck in my driveway. Not crazy about traction control for wintery WI roads.

I purchased this vehicle when it was 2 years old. It was my first "reliable" vehicle, and even with the problems I have had with it I am still very happy with it. I have over 156K miles and I'm hoping to get a few more years out of her. I've read a few reviews and I've had the following problems, just want to be honest with what I've dealt with: clips holding the interiors of the back doors are busted, it's weird since I'm the only one riding in the car 95% of the time. Both headlight lenses fell off within months of each other and cost over $100 each to replace. Water pump had to be replaced. Last year I had to replace the lower intake gasket and the upper intake manifold. Had to replace the blower motor (only worked on high). The exhaust hangers had to be replaced. Replaced rear strut mounts and struts. That and the usual stuff with brake pads and rotors, but I consider that regular maintenance.

well i bought this in june of this yr. so i realy havent had it to long. traded my 99 bonneville SLE in for it. so i upgraded for the NA 3.8 to a supercharged 3.8. GREAT POWER, seats are not as comfy but this is a sports compact and not a bonneville. great mpg, averages at 25. about 20 city and 30 highway. added a FWI and it got even more power. came witht he BOSE stereo wich sounds great, but didnt have the low thump that i like so i added a single 12" sub and now sound perfect. the body style is superb.

Minor fit and finish, premium gas prices. Doesn't everyone wish their mileage was better right about now?

This was an emergency replacement for my late, lamented Monte Carlo. It's basically the same type of car: big, black, American, fast. It's my first four door, but the styling makes it seem not quite so middle-aged. It has all the gadgets except the sunroof, which is not something you want in Florida. Glorious acceleration, acceptable braking, incredible handling for such a big car. (I put new Fuzion HRi tires on her--I can take 90-degree curves at 45 mph without so much as a squeal.) Soon after I got her, the water pump went, and damaged the serpentine belt. Not a cheap repair, but covered under the dealer warranty. Considering when the same thing happened on my '96 Trans Sport, I lost the top half of the engine, I got off light. I also had to replace the battery, but like tires, they're not made by GM. Are there niggling complaints? Absolutely. The clips holding on the interior panels are broken on three out of four doors. The radio drops out for a second when I shift. Yes, I get condensation in the headlight covers, but the lights still work, and, again, I live in Florida. Though I wish the stereo had the automatic levels like my Monte's head unit, instead of the graphic equalizer, the fact is that it not only sounds better than the Monte, it's better than the Bose in my wife's Avalanche. I love love love the engine. it was great in my dad's Buick and my friend's Intrigue, and it's great here. Quiet, powerful, and no wannabe-Japanese high tech. Just a reliable 40-year-old design and a blower.

DON'T EVER BUY A CAR FROM PRESTIGE AUTO SALES. Better yet, DONT EVER BUY A '97 GRAND PRIX. I bought this car about 4 days before my 19th birthday and boy was I excited. Less than a week later, I've gotten my tie rod ends replaced, front brakes and rotors, needed to have my tires rotated and aligned, and i still need an O2 sensor and and a purge valve. Whoever owned the car before me did not maintain the car AT ALL. I still need to get a tune up. The gas gauge was malfunctioning and the dealer never let me know, so as soon as I closed on the car, I ran out of gas on the way back home in Nashville. Not to mention I just took the car into the shop two days ago and there's already a grinding under the front wheels. The volume on the stereo only works using the steering wheel controls and I also need to replace my fog lights. I will say that its my fault for not getting everything checked on the vehicle before I bought it, but the dealer didn't bring anything to my attention. I was a GM fan for my entire life until now. I'll keep it for a few months then I'm selling it. I think I'll got to the Japenese since the Americans cant seem to build a car worth owning.

Strength:

lots of power & acceleration roomy interior great ride

Weakness:

Things wear out far too early for the age & mileage on the car. Gas guzzler, but that's the trade off for the power under the hood in my mind.

Lots of power, roomy interior, nice ride. This is coming from a hard core GM driver. I bought this car used, in 2001 with 18,000 miles on it. What's happened in the past month has this former "hard core" GM man, thinking that I've purchased my last GM car. Like any car, mine has seen some wear & tear and is now up to 100,000 miles, and there’s been the usual brakes & cylinders replacements, tire changes, and all the normal tune ups & oil changes etc that go with owning a car. I have no issues with normal wear & tear problems…it’s a part of life. First up was the heater transistor needed replacing, although it had been replaced not 13 months earlier. $150 (CDN). Next up, the heater motor ran out of oil so it started to make a howling noise everytime someone touched the brakes. Thankfully a GM mechanic was able to force some oil back into heater motor and he did it at no charge, but put me on notice that it’s just a matter of time before the motor goes and the part itself will be $180 (CDN). Next up, throughout October & November, my wife and I started to notice that everytime we had the car parked on our driveway outside and it snowed or rained, that there was water on the floor of the front passenger side of the car. Turns out there was a leak up behind the heater somewhere due to rust. $550 (CDN) to plug that leak, just before Xmas. GM has been selling cars in Canada for over 80 years. You’d think they know that salt is used on the roads here in Ontario in the winter, and build a car with metal that can stand more than 5 yrs on the road. The last straw was today. I’m driving to work on a morning when it’s getting colder outside. I put my window down to have a smoke and it stops working. New electrical switch required to get the power window going. $372 (CDN). Since the beginning of December, I’ve spent $1090 (CDN) on items that I don’t necessarily see as “wear & tear”….not in a car that’s only got 100,000 miles on it and fairly well taken care of. I could see it if this was a car with 200,000+ that some of the things that have happened to me in the past month, would happen through wear & tear, but not on this car, this early. In my opinion, GM has completely lost it’s focus when it comes to securing quality parts & components to build it’s cars and/or the quality of work that goes into building their vehicles is way lower than what it used to be. I’ve decided that I’m not going to be one of the people that continues to finance GM’s Quality Assurance Long Term testing program any longer, where the lucky winner gets to fork over money to fix GM’s problems, and they say thank you very much for the money and keep the data. GM’s going to have to reimburse me for all 3 of the items that happened in the past month for me to consider even looking at another GM again in the future. After each incident, I sent an email to GM on their website, documenting the problem. After the “patch the rust box” incident, I finally got a call from a CSR at GM while I was away on vacation for Xmas. We managed to connect just after new year’s. While she was nice and quietly listened to me, there were no offers to do anything for me, only that she’d look into a few things and get back to me. She’s not gotten back to me. GM has failed on all counts in my mind. Not only do they now build a bad quality product, they do a lackluster job of backing up their product with service. These big companies with their billion+ $$ profits should be able to do better.

Thanks to the driver of a BMW 540i, my GTP is no more. I was determined to get 200,000 miles but fell a little short at 189,637 before being hit head-on by this idiot, I'm lucky to even be breathing. I still think that was the best car I ever owned but I have had 2 of the Widetracks and I think it might be time for something else. American, of course and preferably a General Motors product. Probably an El Dorado or Seville STS, I've never owned a Cadillac.

Strength:

great power, very comfortable ride, very reliable, nice handling, very sporty car with the reliability and roominess of a sedan.

Weakness:

no problems; one thing - rear right brake cable rattled against frame - we tacked it up and fixed the problem; wish Pontiac offered the GTP in a manual transmission.

I bought my '99 2-door supercharged GTP in 2002 with 27,000 miles on it and absolutely love it. It is an awesome car - very sporty, very fast, very fun. I have had no problems whatsoever with the exception of replacing the struts at 65,000 miles but that was a minor and fairly inexpensive fix (about $300). At 240 horses, it has plenty of power - both high end power and torque. Transmission is very responsive which is a pet peeve of mine. It has a "performance shift" button which allows it to get to a higher rpm before shifting when you're really trying to accelerate quickly. Handles great around corners and does great going uphill - no loss of power whatsoever - supercharger helps a lot. Gas mileage isn't great - around 20 mpg - but the power makes it well worth it. I have the full leather interior and it has stayed very nice - no cracks or anything. Amazing amount of room in the back seat - comfortable for an adult. Plenty of leg room and head room up front - I'm 6 feet tall. Love the heated seats. Paint still looks great, only a few chips (compliments of Colorado's rocks). Does ok in snow - not great but the front wheel drive and the weight help out a lot. The ABS brakes have come in handy several times. All in all it has been a very reliable and fun car. I take good care of it though - regular oil changes, added k&n filter, regularly applied ArmorAll Protectant on interior, etc.
