Strength:
Quick and smooth acceleration (9 seconds from 0-60 mph)for a large car.Decent build quality, great engine, very comfortable, everything still works,
Weakness:
Door hinges prone to rust, electronic climate control erratic (at idle it would read 60 degrees causing the computer to think it was hot and therefore turning the heating on. On heavy rain days, water enters from the rear rocker panel or somewhere and gets into where the rear interior light is. parts are expensive. I have owned my bonneville for over 4 years, I have replaced the following: alternator, battery, tires, gas tank, gas line, radiator, brakes, rotors, drums, P.S. return line, windshield, IAC, EGR valve, ball joints, tie-rod, A/C compressor, cost :$4,800.00 (is this a lot?). Overall this is a great car, it handles great with the 16inch wheels and tires and sport suspension. Did I mention it has excellent 0-60 pick-up . It now has 150,000 klm. Everything!
Weakness:
none I love my bonneville like a fat kid loves cake=). It's one of the smoothest riding cars I've ever ridden in. I bought it with about 98 thousand miles on it, it now has about 105 thousand, and I have never had any problems with it. It's very roomy and comfortable, and has great acceleration and gas mileage. I owned a 1989 bonneville before this one and loved it just as much, and bought my 92 bonnie because of it. They're extremely relialble cars and I would reccomend one to anyone thinking of buying one...You'll love it! Similar Products Used: 1989 Pontiac Bonneville |

Strength:
Power and roominess, that's about it.
Weakness:
Most everything else, many small parts inside the car have briken and had to be replaced (speakers fell out, lock button broken, rear door light cracked and fell out, etc.) I am on my third transmission; first replced on warranty at 30,000 miles; send was off warranty at about 60,000 (had prolonged fight with GM which eventually gave me 1,000.00 toward 2,500.00 cost. Had water pump replaced at 20,000 miles on warranty; replaced burned out wires at 70.000 miles (car was not supposed to need tune-up until 100,000 miles. Now have leaking antifreeze and intake gasket problem - will probably cost 400.00 plus. Another is leaking windshield gasket, driver's floorpan floods when it rains. Similar Products Used: 1993 Nissan Sentra, no major problems over 9 years of ownership and 150,000;just bought a new one. 1970 Dodge Cahlleger R/T, at 33 years old, the transmission is better than the Bonneville and the win |

Strength:
Looks good...but it isn't.
Weakness:
HA HA HA...to numerous to mention. Don't expect help from the GM help line...Go straight to the BBB or a lawyer..TRUST ME. I'll never buy a GM product again. My 2002 Bonneville is a lemon. I've already been through the BBB arbitration process for paint problems. My problems started on day one, a bad fan control button. Then the paint problem was noticed. Next was an electrical short requiring replacement of the AC control head unit. The short knocked out the dash assembly. Let's see, what was next. Oh yeah, at 7,000 miles I thought I detected a hint of an antifreeze smell. You guessed it, a bad manifold gasket. Then there was a noisy heater core (gurgling noises). And now, my speedometer is on the fritz. The car thinks I'm going 110 to 120 mph when I'm driving 65. The car is going back inot the shop tomorrow, one week after it's last visit to the shop. I wonder if I'll have to argue that I haven't put 8000 miles on the car in one week. That's right, last week 11,500 miles, this week 19,500 miles. There is no doubt that this is already the worst car I've ever owned. Back to Ford for me. Similar Products Used: I had pretty good luck with my Taurus, and a new Lincoln, and a Ford Ranger. I had a new 78 Chevy van..pretty nice..except for 2 blown engines within the first 80K miles...GM paid for the first one... |

Strength:
Plenty of power, handles well, decent ride for a sportier sedan, comfortable on trips, plenty of room, large trunk, good looks.
Weakness:
Transmission seems weak and has trouble finding gears, water pours into trunk when you open the trunk in the rain (poorly designed lid), auto climate control gets confused, stereo sounds good but is prone to blow out display, interior seems as though it will fall apart later on. I bought this car with 26k miles on it and with over a year left on factory warranty (thank God) and figuring on buying extended warranty after that. W/in 1000 miles I had to have door hinges repaired, side molding replaced, leaky trunk fixed, a new stereo put in since the pos Delco blew out, transmission mount repaired, all new brakes and rotors. The dealer was very good about making repairs and they were all free under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. But this is too new of a car for all these problems. My car also uses a couple of quarts of oil every 3,000 miles which GM claims is normal these days. Yeah, right. At 34k the engine started ticking loudly. The dealer found the lifters to be corroded and who knows what else is wrong internally. After doing research they found out the infamous plastic manifold had already been replaced as well as the lower manifold before I bought the car. They think coolant got into engine at that time and is now corroding everything. They showed me the plastic manifold and I can't believe how flimsy this thing is. It practically twists and bends just looking at it sideways. So my car has been in the shop all week while I'm driving a rental. Thankfully everything is covered by GM. They deserve to pay for their cheap ways. They've known about this bad manifold for years and after thousands of complaints but choose to do nothing. At least Ford had a recall on theirs. I think this warrants a class action lawsuit especially if you have to pay thousands of dollars if your car is out of warranty for this repair. I was planning on keeping this car and buying an extended warranty but now I'm going to get rid of it as soon as I get it back. The plastic manifold just makes it too unreliable and you never know when it will fail again. Mechanics have told me that Buicks, Pontiacs, Chevys with this 3800 engine are having the manifold fail at only 2000 miles and then again and again. It's too bad because I like the car otherwise. It has plenty of power and handles well. If you buy one make sure you get rid of it before the 3/36 warranty runs out. This will probably be my last GM purchase. It would be different if they tried to correct their mistake rather than ripping customers off. I had much better luck with Ford products. By the way, after much research I've found out that the GM 3.1 and 3.4 liter engines are also problematic and easily prone to coolant flooding due to a cheaply and ill designed manifold gasket. People are complaining about them blowing right and left while GM chooses to do nothing about this also. So this rules out buying a Buick Century, Buick Park Avenue, Monte Carlo, Impala, Bonneville, Alero, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Cavalier, various minivans, and God knows what else GM makes with any three of these motors. I just hope their V8's are better than these poorly made V6's. Way to go GM!! Good riddance!!! Strong engine, huge trunk. LOVED my Bonny. Had very few problems with her (bought with over 100,000 miles). Great gas mileage (24 mpg). She recently gave up the ghost(just rolled over 200,000 miles) when the timing change jumped. I'm still in mourning :( Going to go to a car auction to get another engine and "ressurect" her for hubby's work car. Due to finances, I'll probly be stuck with a new Prizm (I'd much rather have the Bonneville) |

Strength:
The ride was smooth, dependable 3800 engine, roomy interior, every thing was great...good gas mileage (375 miles in one tank of gas on the highway)
Weakness:
none!!!! I bought it with 164k and when it got wrecked it had 194k. Just repaired things that are normal for those miles.(water pumo, spark plugs and wires) I loved this car, and would still be drinving it, if only every 19-year-old kid knew better than to turn left across traffic without yeilding. Her stupidity resulted in my "Bonnie" being totalled, not to mention the back pain I am suffering. Was it "Bonnie's" fault, ABSOLUTELY NOT! I am actually currently shopping for another Bonneville, any ideas? None.
Weakness:
Everthing about this poor excuse for an automobile. Started reading these reviews because I am having the coolant loss and white smoke/poor idle problem and I thought these might give me an idea of why. Sounds like I have the cheap plastic manifold problem. I will replace it myself to save a few hundred dollars but this time next week this car will be somebody else's problem. I have around 115,00 miles on it. It had 96,000 miles on it when I bought it. Also, the interior is very cheap. Speaker grills keep falling off, rear maplight buttons fall off, radio display works when it feels like it, doors rattle, cup holders on doors are ridiculous (nothing like coffee and soda all your door panels, seat, and carpet every time you close the door). And the automatic climate control has a mind of it's own. This is the last GM product I will own (not that any other car manufacturer is any better. I think I'll just buy a horse.) Similar Products Used: 1975 Pontiac Trans Am (Loved this car. I put 397,000 miles on this withuot the first major problem) |
