DESCRIPTION

The Pontiac Aztek was a mid-size crossover produced by the General Motors marque Pontiac from the 2001 model year to the 2005 model year — the first crossover offered by GM. The Aztek offered Versatrak, a full-time, fully-automatic all-wheel drive system which provided sure-footed traction in the snow or rain and could handle moderately rough off-road surfaces

Strength:

Quiet and smooth ride. Reasonable gas milage for the AWD. Love the heads up display option. Quality interior features, not cheap. Expecially compared to the 2003 Montana.

Weakness:

So far, only thing that comes to mind is the sliding cargo tray. They rate it for 400 pound capacity. You need to pull it out so it latches in place so it doesn't slide back into the car. Try loading it with a lot of weight and getting it back into the car virtually impossible. You need to lift it slightly to get over the latch point so it slides back. I can't lift that much weight. Found loading a lot of weight, you're better leaving it out and keeping the trunk lid open.

These reviews are scaring me. I bought this vehicle as a pleasure use only and have 6,700 miles after almost three years. I try to keep it out of the rain and definitely out of the snow and lousy roads in Pittsburgh. I love it, but just this past week the Service Engine Soon light went on. I have an appointment to check this out. I have three months left in my warranty. I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned except for the trunk latch. I attribute this to the weight of the trunk lid. I find you have to be attempting to open it then click the key fob. Otherwise, I think it keeps latching again since it's heavy and doesn't pop up like a normal trunk. My wife got a 2003 Montana last year. These are similar vehicles as far as the frame and engine. I can't believe how cheaply made the Montana is compared to my 2001 Aztec. After reading these reviews, I am hoping GM sends me a extended warranty offer. I am hoping to keep this for a lot of years into retirement.

Other vehicles are the 2003 Montana and 1999 Subaru Legacy wagon. The Legacy is another story. Junk! Finding problems that I would never expect after 60K miles. I.E. Rear wiper motor bad. Power Antenna replaced twice. A/C switch light out. Horrible road noise. Will never buy another Subaru product no matter how long the engines are suppose to last.

I am so disappointed with this car. Within the first week of owning this car the check engine light was on - gas cap issue. I bought my car when it was around thirty degrees outside and the air conditioner seemed to work, however on the first warm day of this year, the day that i needed to use my air conditioner, it didn't work, didn't blow cool air and the fan adjustment did not work on levels 1 and 2. Luckily my local pontiac dealership took care of this problem, but two days ago, while on vacation, my air conditioner blows once again, so after inspection today the dealership told me that I need a new module of some sort, and that this has nothing to do with the problem that I had before, and that I will need $375 (I don't remember if labor is included) for this repair. It seems odd to me that I am having the same problem as before but somehow, to the dealership, it's not related to my prior problem. I feel like such an idiot for not reading these reviews before purchasing. Forgot to mention that I, also, have had problems with my hatch opening properly, driver side door not keeping a secure closure (has already been adjusted once and already need adjusting again), the material on the driver side seat is already torn, and when I start my car, even with the lightest turn of the ignition, the engine sounds as though I am holding the key over too long (horrible noise). The sad thing is that I really love my car, the color (green), the shape, the radio, the fat steering wheel, red in-dash lighting, etc., but what good is a car if costly things are going to happen when it has 50k on it? I have owned all foreign cars prior to the Aztek, and I never experienced these kind of problems with any of them (and of those cars had more than 150k on them, this car 50k).

Lots and lots of room, comfortable ride, good stereo system, free tent package, removeable back seats, good looks, good milage, little repair problems

Weakness:

back does not open well on cold days and licence plate light broke and really have to close back hatch hard

I absolutely love my Aztec. The only thing that went wrong in the past 3 years is a A/C compressor went out and the warranty covered it. I have done nothing else except change the tires and oil. The roomy, comfortable and safe ride appeal to a family man like myself. We can take the dogs to the park, take half of the back seat out to go to the store or even take it all out to put up the free tent that the sent us. Everyone I see i recomend to them to buy an aztec. Not quite a mini-van and not quite and SUV. It appeals to the younger crown who has not admitted that they will eventually need a min-van:)

Bad transmission, trunk doesnt open well, rolls back on you when you try to park it.

My aztec gave me problems with the transmission within a year and a half of useage. The air conditioning system went on it. The Gas gage went on it . It tends to roll back when you are in a tight spot trying to park it . Transmission fluid leaked again recently this time there was no metal in the pan but it still had gasket problems. Cost a lot to fix . Scared to drive the vehicle because of transmission worries.

Strength:

It is fun to drive, roomy storage. It's easy to love... until the major repairs begin... 36001 miles. (however dash, engine lights and airbags went much earlier... fixed under warranty.. then broke again... not covered!)

Weakness:

Major component failures are not backed by dealer or manufacturer. Pontiac should forewarn customers of the short, risky life span of airbags, air conditioning, head gaskets, tranmission, (roll back feature), tires, brakes, all dash electronics,

BE FOREWARNED! Aztek's are not reliable and Pontiac does not back them. I too have experienced, and am experiencing, every major problem mentioned in these reviews: DUAL HEAD GASKETS BLOWN AIR BAGS FAULTY DASH ELECTRONICS SPARE TIRE MECHANISM INOPERABLE AIR CONDITIONING GONE HEADLAMPS The above are not mileage related. Quality components should last more than two years. My advice to current Aztek owners... get your car in to have the above replaced soon if you are still under warranty. Please contact me if you agree. My story is too long but similar to all those I found here. (Jenny! Your story is IDENTICAL to mine!) I am tenaciously contacting Pontiac. I will update all of you with any results.. positive or negative. Wish me luck or let me know how to get their help!

Strength:

Roomy enough for a family. Lots of room for car seats and stroller. Nice Radio.

Weakness:

Everything Else! Unfortunately I owe more on this car than I'd ever get out of it if I tried to sell it or trade it. I'm counting down the days till it's paid off so I can get rid of it. Six months later, I've given up waiting till it's paid off. I think I'm going to take the loss and get rid of this pile of junk.

Where do I begin... had front wheel bearings replaced twice already. Replaced rear rotors before 15k miles. Air compressor never worked. Cooling system leaked. Intake gaskets leaked. Oil pump quit. Heater quit. Driver's door has a lot of wind noise. Rear hatch rarely works, can't open it at all right now. Had hatch fixed last week at my Pontiac dealer, they worked on it for two days, fix lasted less than 5 days, it's stuck shut again. This car has been in the shop way too often. Aside from Mechanical problems... the "tail gate" design of the rear hatch is awkward. Nice big trunk space, but difficult to access because of the tailgate. I have a sliding tray in there, but it's still awkward. The console is also awkward. It's a cooler. Kind of a neat idea on the rare occasion you need a cooler in the car, but not very functional every other day. Irritating that it won't stay open when you're trying to find something. You have to hold it open with one hand and dig around for your CD's, sunglasses or whatever with the other (impossible to do while driving). Very poor visibility in every direction except straight ahead. Ordered this car and took delivery in June of last year. Ordered the camping package with the car. Looked forward to a summer of camping. Camping package was back-ordered for 7 months. Missed that summer. This is the first Pontiac I've owned. Because of my experience with this car and the less-than-satisfactory service I've received from my local dealer, this will be the last Pontiac I'll own. I wrote this review in January. It's June now and my car just turned 2 years old. Since I wrote this review, the old Aztek's had a busted tie rod (for no apparent reason) and has had to have the head gaskets replaced. Head gaskets on a two year old car!!!! That was a month ago. It's back in the shop again today because the air conditioning quit working and it's leaking something on my garage floor. Maybe the head gaskets again. I'll find out today. Oh yeah, and if you try to put more than one window up or down at a time, it'll blow a fuse every time. Minor problem I guess. I just have to remember to do them one at a time. Very annoying.

cigaret liters. cd player gets hungary sometimes

you guys are scaring the shi* out of me. i just recently purchased my car i have enjoyed it so far it brings lots of attention because of its wierd look but it is very roomy. i like the cooler option even though the person who had the car before me did not return it with the lease i was able to get one free at charge from a close friend so all that i am missing now is the tint.my complaint would be that it comes with lots of cigaret liters but the only one that works currently is the one in the trunk. i have also had problems opening the trunk. my head light went out which is minor but i only had the car for 3weeks. when i purchased the car it had 26,000 miles on it so from the other reviews i can start saving for all the repairs im headed for. i did not get the extended warrenty like a dummy. but so far no complaints besides the rear latch and the cigaret liters and my cds often get stuck in the cd player and i have to wait until the next day to retreive them

Strength:

Wide seats, lots of head room, great trunk, great radio and love my sunroof

Weakness:

the cooler is no big deal, it may have too many electronics for it's own good. Heater is crap so far.

I bought this car for the trunk. It's great to go on vacation with four people and actually take luggage for 4 people. It is good in the snow if you have good snow tires but I am very cautious in high winds. This car is top heavy and you have be respectful of sharp turns. This is the most expensive vehicle I've ever owned, I paid the most down and still took out a 5 year loan which I never have done before. It's been back to the garage more times than any car I've ever owned. That's why I signed on here. You guys are scaring me. My heater has not worked right all winter and it's back in the garage for the 4th time. I've just had my second time that the key didn't work and had to use the remote start. Trunk lid is not working right. It is starting to make sucking noises which is too bad cause it's a great car with great space, comfort, and flexibility. I've had a very large tv box in the back, no problem; a full size outdoor grill, fully assembled, fit it beautifully without taking it apart; moved my kid to college in one trip; and helped moved my son from an apartment to a new home. Couldn't believe the room. You guys have missed the advantage of the bar across the back window. Some don't like it but I find it is stragically designed to go right across the headlights of people who are tailgating you which is one of my pet peeves. I love that design. Someone was really thinking. It has taken a lot of stress out of my night driving. I sure hope my dealer can get the bugs out of this car because I'll be greatly disappointed if it turns out to be a lemon. I'm hoping the reason it only has a 36000 mile warrantly isn't because they know something I don't but I have a feeling I'm gonna be wrong.

Love the looks, it gives it character. Love the roominess! Love the drive!

Weakness:

That back hatch thing is the only one I can come up with so far.

I received my Liquid Grey Metallic Aztec from my husband, last month, as a Bday gift. (I gave him an ultimatum - a New Car or a Baby - I got the car.) I LOVE IT!!!! I have test-driven the Aztec for the past 3 years and have loved it since the first drive. I love its looks and smile happily when people make fun of it. They're just jealous of its uniqueness. It's adorable. I haven't had it long enough to have any problems and after reading the reviews, I'm just hoping I got a good one. My husband had never been in one until the day we brought "Baby" home. I made him drive it home and for the first time, he agreed that it was a great ride. It is very comfortable, much more so than my previous 4dr family sedan. The ride is very smooth. My husband was amazed at how much it drove like a car rather than a truck, which was his biggest fear. I know everyone complains about the blind spots, but after only driving it two weeks, I do not have a problem with them. Stereo is great. LOVE all the room. (We have looked at many SUVs over the past couple of years, and this was definitely the roomiest). Look forward to taking it camping this summer. I agree that the rear hatch sticks sometimes, but I usually just push the button a couple of times and it's fine. Love the features in the hatch area. I can’t wait to take it tailgating. Have not had to drive it in the snow yet, but with the Versatrak Option, I'm sure even in the Pittsburgh Winters I will have no problems. I was worried about maneuvering a large vehicle since I've never owed an SUV, but again, after only two weeks, I have no problems at all. My son LOVES it. Thinks it is a very cool ride. Safety was a big issue and the fact that this one has a smaller wheel base and a shorter height than most SUVs was a huge plus. Four airbags were also a big plus. It handles remarkably well and is a pleasure to drive. I hope I have nothing but good luck with this “Baby”.
