Strength:

power, acceleration, smooth engine, smooth shifting, high speed acceleration excellent. seats are comfortable, interior controls good, bose sound system is awesome. styling is great.

Weakness:

i generally don't like plastic wood trim. however, the plastic wood trim on this car is well done. i just wish it were real wood. it wouldn't have cost that much to make it real.

excellent car. no mechanical or trim problems at all. this car feels really good. it is wonderfully stable at high speed. it is fun to race against the mercedes c class on the interstate. feel bulletproof when driving it. we intended to check out bmw, audi, and mercedes before buying a new car. the quality of this car and the price advantage over these makes caused us to purchase the intrigue. gm got it right with my intrigue.

Strength:

Handling, braking and performance. The car is a dream to drive with plenty of performance for this class of car.

Weakness:

Dual Zone AC/Heater controls are too automatic and prevent some individual selection combinations. The AM/FM/CD/Tape runs extremely warm almost to the point that one feels that the CD is going to melt.

The car is one of the best GM has produced in a mid size car. Some of the initial brake problems people experienced with these cars (warped rotors) is fixed by a GM brake campaign. I have purchased a new 2001 with the 3.5 liter motor. The new motor has more mid-range performance with very little loss at off idle speeds. I have extremely few miles on the new vehicle, so comments on the Precision Control system will have to wait. I believe that many magazine reviews are so hung up on foreign cars that they don't give this car its true credit.

Strength:

This car handles like a dream. The acceleration is excelent. The leather seats are very suportive. I feel as if it were a sports car as opposed to a family sedan.

Weakness:

The annoying thump while turning, my left headlight is shorted out along with the fog lamps, poor panel fit, and the radio gets very hot.

With a little more attention to detail, this car could compete with the best German sendans. I DO NOT like American cars, but when I got behind the wheel of this one, I fell in love. The VW is a toy, and I sold the Accord which was a daily driver, soon after buying this one. The Intrigue is handles better than any car in it's class. I can cruise at 105 mp/h without any shuddering or unexpected jolts. I had the car up 110 before the governor kicked in. I would definately consider buying a new one when this one reaches 100,000 miles. I love all of the features that come standard on this car.

Strength:

Engine. Passing power. front seat room, visibility, standard features. I have the 3.5L version.

Weakness:

Road noise. Front suspension noise

Unfixable suspension noises. New intermediate steering shaft fixes clunking noises. Popping sounds when turning right are fixed by lubing jounce bumpers, but noise will come back. Car does not start sometimes but has not left me stranded. Overall a good car, that failed in execution. I would buy another one even with its problems.
This car rocks on the highway, and is faster than many sports cars. I have gotten 29 mpg at 80 mph.

Strength:

This car is a beaut! Arctic white, chrome, grey leather, smokin! Nice acceleration, braking. Styling, styling, styling!! Oh' and sweet power.

Weakness:

Strange rattle in rear speaker area comes and goes. Fuel economy inconsistant. Power driver seat sticks sometimes. Has failed to turn over while starting a few times.

My first new car so initially I thought it was the best car ever. After a year, maybe not the best ever, but still very, very impressed overall. Great ride with excellent combination of sport and comfort. Only one mechanical problem to date that needed attention. A seal in the power stearing needed replacing, no big deal. Other than that the only complaint is from the varios squeaks and rattles that appear and dissappear, quiet most of the time though. Gets lots of looks when detailed out. No question its a handsome car. I feel like I got in on a secret with this car. I think if more people gave this car a chance you would see more on the road, especially Grand Prix, Taurus/Sable, Regal, Intrepid, Stratus, Impala drivers. Sad to see the Olds go. After buying the car I was excited to see the evolution through the years. Plan to keep for while!

Weakness:

Build quality, relability

The car had a very poor fit and finish. I believed the GM hype about the car competing with BMW's, Audi's, and the like. HOGWASH !! If you drove the car for 2 hours at night ( or lights on in rain for instance ) the stereo controls became VERY hot to the touch. What was OLDS thinking? Was there no quaility control testing? I had my car in for service 5 times in the 6 months I had the Crapmobile (and yes I took a beating in on the trade-in). I guess my Honda and Mitsu had spoiled me. Never, Never will I ever buy another GM product. The car also had several creaks and groans the dealer was never able to isolate to which the dealer said "Its a new product, it takes a while to work through some of these things". Goodbye and good riddance to Oldsmobile.

Strength:

The engine is strong with gobs of torque.

Weakness:

Everything else is weak. The car has been in for warranty service 8 times in 2 years, usually for multiple items each time. Interior is cheap, leather seems to have come from a PVC cow, rattles, unfixable front suspension noises, steering wheel out of round, bad door trim that caused the door to stick (twice repaired shoddily at the dealership), power window died in the down position, dealer wouldn’t offer a loaner because he said it was a driveable condition, seat belts recalled, brake problems that were finally addressed when the dealer was presented with a copy of the TSB by us. Dealer network that has no concept of customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Thirty years ago, people would say “Don’t get power locks, windows, climate control, etc, because it’s just another thing that can break.” This car validates their fears with gusto. I bought this with .9% financing and a GM discount and thought I got a great deal. Without question the worst car I’ve ever owned. Yes, the engine is good (3.8L) and strong, but nothing comes close to the shoddiness of everything else, a lousy vehicle horribly executed. This stickered around 24K and I can now get “How about 10K?” from a dealer in trade. Absolute POS. Had it in yesterday to replace ABS sensors, ABS motor, and other brake bits. The dealer never called to tell us it was done, but did call early to see if we wanted an $89 fuel injector cleaning and a $49(!!!) tire rotation. Now Olds has been cut and they brought it on themselves. Kudos to GM for the mercy killing. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for sparing the American public of this horrid car, and anyone in the American auto industry of the embarrassment of the Intrigue. I can get employee discounts from both Ford and GM and a Chrysler supplier discount, but I’m through gambling and losing. If the rate of service visits continues, I won’t be able to afford this car when the warrantee has expired. We’re currently looking for a Honda or Acura and in looking at them, I can see why they don’t have to offer 0% financing and $4k rebates. The value is there, even at sticker. You might say “But I can get an Intrigue cheap.” No matter how much it’s discounted, you will be paying too much. When you can buy a used one for half of what it sold for new 1 or 2 years earlier, take that as a sign...

Strength:

Impressive power, luxury appointments, good looks. Basically, the 98 is a Grand Prix GT sedan, all the major mechanicals from the intake to the exhaust to the axles are the same parts. The strut mounts were moved, that's it. It's lighter, prettier, and more comfortable. What else do you want?

Weakness:

Still, in all it's glory, it's handling still rings of an oldsmobile, like it's got a kiddie pool on the roof *slosh*. A lot tighter than your dad's delta 88, but not exactly the tight responsiveness that the 3800/T65E combo deserves. And of all the cars out there, this is the one to have CarFax'ed before you buy it. There seems to be a lot of Intrigues slipping out of the factory with the now-recalled "extreme citrus" (lemon) package equipped. New 3.5 litre mini-Northstar is quieter and has a bit more oomph, but I still enjoy the massive low-end torque of the now 27-year-old 3800.

My favorite car to date. I'm a car enthusiast and budding mechanic, and at first I was drooling over Preludes and Eclipses, but realized this is my only car, and I'd like to be able to use it in any situation. Four doors. D'oh, I'm stuck in a grocery-getter. Not. This car can run with the big guys, I'm regularly attracting the attention of 5 and 7-series BMWs, C and M-class Mercedes, and various other sports sedans on the freeway, they all seem to love to run with me, and I can stick to them. It'll light up well at stop lights like any sports car should, my poor tires are going bald. Got it right as winter set in, so I'm holding off modifying it until spring. With some better tires, springs, a cold air box, and some exhaust work, this may be the perfect car. Oh, and by the way, the 3800/T65E combo regularly goes past 200,000 miles without having to do any teardown work. It'll be around a while, take care of it.

Strength:

Excellent 3.5L engine, silky smooth transmission, precision steering, overall abundance of features & comfort. Well engineered. Tight turning radius. Big trunk. Ample seating for 4-5. Good stereo. A very smooth, refined ride (my baby sleeps soundly in this car, but I have a blast driving it.)

Weakness:

Change oil light needs to be manually turned off after each oil change. Rear seatbelt stopped functioning. Strange creeking sound when turning to the left - the dealer didn't know what the cause was so they must lubed everything & and creek went away. Fog light no longer works. Stereo controls become VERY hot to the touch. Gas mileage a little disappointing. I'm not in love the the climate controls, but they suffice.

Overall, this is a highly satisfactory car. It's highway passing power is excellent. It's fun to drive and holds the road well. It kills me that this car did not sell well or catch on. The general public has really missed the boat on this car!

Similar Products Used:

1997 Nissan Maxima. The Intrigue is clearly stronger and feels more stable at higher speeds (80-95). The Maxima has more pop off of the line. Neither car has had major problems. The Intrigue has had a few more ticky-tack problems as mentioned above. No strong preference either way.

Strength:

I love this car!!!!! I love the way it looks(I was sold as soon as I saw it in the lot); Mine's black with a spoiler; I never though I'd want a spoiler, but it looks great. This car is so sleek, and powerful looking, and just plain different. I love driving it; it does what I want, when I want. It's fast as hell, it doesn't ever halt or complain when I push it. It's comfortable to sit in ( I've already taken 2 3hr trips and never felt sore or uncomfortable). everyone who sees it or rides in it loves it; they all want to know what it is..(good job Olds with the advertising....sigh). Even though it's basically the same under the hood as the Grand Prix, there's no contest in looks or feel of the cars. Intrigue hands down. Plenty of leg/head/waist room (I'm 6') in front and back. I had a tall person drive it so I could sit behind the driver, and I had space to spare. Big ass trunk (plenty of space for hauling bodies), great handling; simple, practical, but stylish look inside. And, did I mention how superb it looks from the outside? It just says "Get the Hell out of my way" Good safety ratings, great price...Mine was a repo, and only had 12k miles when I bought it 3 weeks ago, I've put about 1k miles so far, and no troubles. Still smells new.

Weakness:

Wish fog lights and CD were standard on GX....but, hey, it's the GX...
The sticker price for new ones (and most used ones with more miles) are WAY too high. I paid 13,500 for a 99 with 12k miles....ive only seen other 99's with 30k or more miles for at least $18k...in the GX, too....not souped up or anything....If they wanted to sell em to younger people (or simply more people) they shouldn't have tried to bleed you so much for it.

Would totally recommend this car to anyone! My family loves it. My parents just bought a 99 Mazda 626(upgrading from their 91 626), and are jealous of my car and the deal I got.
