Nissan 200SX
Strength:
Adequate power (would be even better without the automatic tranny and power goodies); Nissan dependability (all my power options and A/C work fine after 14 years and 200,000 km). Excellent handling, stability. great 10W factory AM/FM cassette (though the cassette player''''s wonky); rear-wheel drive means poorer winter traction, but no replacement of costly CV joints. Nice styling (mine''''s a 2-dr coupe), though a little dated now (especially the pop-up headlights!).
Weakness:
The headroom, as I mentioned earlier, and the motor is kind of raw sounding at idle, certainly not as smooth running as a Honda Civic or Jetta/Golf gas engine. It''''s find under acceleration, though. The motor''''s not designed for the shade tree mechanic. Even changing the air filter is complicated! Back seat unusable for seating by adults; even children would be pretty cramped; trunk is wide, but not overly deep. In desperate need of a car, and short on cash, I picked up my ''''87 200SX cheap, in the hope I might get a year or two out of it without any major repairs. If I''''d had time to look around and a little more money, this definitely wouldn''''t have been my car of choice for several reasons (2 dr is inconvenient; trunk is decent size, but not deep, serious lack of headroom, cramped interior feel). However, the price was right and I was desparate. So far, (three months) this car has been a pleasant surprise, providing decent gas mileage (32-34 hwy, 26-30 city), adequate power given it''''s an automatic loaded with every conceivable option (2.0L four), and very solid handling. It''''s a little cramped for a big man (6'''' 240lbs), but some careful seat adjusting will compensate somewhat. But the "fun to drive" quotient is high and getting higher every day. I actually find myself looking for just about any reason to take it out for a run! Given the well-cared for interior (no rips or tears anywhere), decent body (some rust starting; some fixed), and relatively low mileage for its age (120,000 miles; 200,000)I expect I might get longer out of this vehicle than originally planned. And the rear-wheel drive is just fine; brings back memories of a beloved 1970 Firebird I once owned. Both vehicles offer a similar driving position and solid on-road feel at any speed. I like this car better every day I own it! Similar Products Used: 1985 VW Jetta GL, 1986 Honda Civic sedan, 1995 Nissan Sentra (bulletproof) |

Strength:
This car is so darn reliable. I have had no electrical problems, not even the annoying engine light thing. Just recently, the A/C light doesn''t come on anymore when you push it. No biggie. Plus, the LED lights in the spoiler ALL come on....still. Not like those LED brake light spoilers on those old Honda Accords, where it starts looking spotty. Plus there is excellent head room and the side view mirrors are big so you can see a lot.
Weakness:
The engine is kind of weak. But pretty much all cars in the under $15K class were pretty weak back in ''95. Should have gotten the SE-R, but was on a tight budget. The styling of the car is not so great. I must say this is a great car for the money. Back in 1995, I was looking at Honda Civic and Chevy Cavalier. Thank goodness I didn''t go with the Cavalier. My friend''s sister got one in ''98 and the brakes went out at a stop sign and she went into the intersection. The Civic looked pretty nice, but cost a bit more than the 200 SE and had less power. Most of all, it had no room for a guy like me (6''2'''' 220). The car pretty much had everything a high schooler could want in a new car, except for a sunroof and CD player (I got an after market CD and speakers a little while later), and that''s pretty much all the upgrades I''ve had since then. Stereo, passs-through from trunk, 120+ km highway noise Can't get a better car for the money. I've had this car for 5 years (bought a '95 in '96). Compared with the Civic Si at the time. This car has a much more enjoyable "nervous" feeling to it and is a lot of fun, especially in corners. I feel very confident driving it...(at 100+k). Somewhat noisy at 120+km (rpms >3500). Civiv has quitier interior, but a lot less for the same price (e.g SE-R comes with an alarm system, A/C, Fog light (for whatever purpose they are meant to serve other than aethetics), 15"wheels, 4-disc ABS etc... Body colours in the year that I bought weren't stellar. Similar Products Used: Civic Si...much less for the same money...less fun to drive without a doubt |

Ice Cold AC, Fantastic Gas Mileage, Reliability, Extras like power everything, moon roof, cruise control. Crisp handling, even in heavy rain. Good punch from manual transmission when flooring it.
Weakness:
Nothing to major, mostly anoying things like : Small Backseat, Sun visors that fall in your lap when trying to adjust them. Wiper blades that are hard to replace. A windshield washer pump that has needed replacing twice now. A noisy belt that my mechanic cannot find to replace. I bought my car in 1997 for $10,000. At the time, it had 13,000 miles on it. Intially, I was attracted to it for all the features it had, at a price that I almost could afford.. after all it was my first "real" car - the others were all family handme downs and tent sale specials. Now that I've had it for almost five years and driven it everywhere & back I cannot bear the thought of parting with it, especailly considering what I paid for it then, and how little I've had to spend on it. (I did have to do normal stuff like tires, battery, and brakes... but the only outstanding thing was a $300 CV boot replacement.)I would buy this car again in a heartbeat. Keep your oil changed, tires rotated, and car waxed and it will drive and look like new for years!! Similar Products Used: Civic: My Nissan way outshines... In looks, In performance, In value. Strength:
I love that it is a reliable car. I have never had any problems except for ware, tare, and a havy clutch foot. Even though it has over a hundred thousand miles it is in superb shape. I love my modified sound system and grafics I put into it. A real keeper!! The look is great and it is not like some big "boats" out there, it is nice and compact for easy manuverability.
Weakness:
The oil filter is hard to get to even with proper tools. That is my only complaint. My car is low in value because of high milage, but I trust its reliability. Overall it is a wonderful car and hope to keep it awhile. It is not my personal dream car but the next best thing. Anyone who wants an inexpensive car with mad easy hook up this is the one for you. Similar Products Used: My husband has a '93 Altima. He tells me my car is smaller and with the right hook up it can be faster. His car is smooth too but mine can dust him. |

Strength:
Reliability, handling, performance, acceleration, front seat room and comfort, many amenities for an econo sport coupe. Very good air/heat system, fast and powerful.
Weakness:
Really crappy sound system, even if you get the so-called premium version with the SE-R package of upgrades. The speakers were trash and the head unit, made by Clarion, is real junk. Replaced with Blaupunkt Nevada(mot very good), an a/d/s/ amp (fantastic), and MB Quart speakers(the best out out there). Poor turning radius, true of many Nissan models. Cheapo interior treatment This is a long term follow-up on my earlier review when my car was new. This car gets better with use and is now three years old. It is faster, handles better, and stops shorter than when new. And, it was mighty good when new. those of you who missed it when it was available, eat your heart out. Those of you who have one, keep it for at least one hundred thousand miles. This car is a friend for the long run. I can afford the more luxurious and costly competition, but why pay for that when I have this enjoyable and sturdy performer? Not a single problem in three years. For the driver who wants performance, handling, reliability, and economy in a very useful sport coupe configuration, this car is it. Similar Products Used: The only rival is the 2001 Sentra SE (which has the same lovely engine), maybe the Infiniti G20 for more posh and cash. |

Strength:
Rock solid reliability and great fuel economy top my list of praises for this automobile. With its "sporty" look and decent speed (even the 1.6 is relatively quick with a five speed) this car offers great bang for your buck.
Weakness:
The alignment has been a problem. The stock tires (Dunlop) have been a series of problems (although in Nissan's favor that isn't really their fault). Front passenger's side squeaks a lot, could be a loose panel or bad shock or poor spring. Not the most nimble car in a parking lot. With great fortune I found this car not two months after it was discontinued. The dealership had one left and wanted to rid itself of this automobile. So they offered me over 4000 dollars off the list price. I ended up getting the car for just a shy over 12,000 dollars--brand new (only 80 test driven miles on her). She came with the little 1.6 litre engine which is slightly underpowered. I'm sure the 2.0 is plenty of power, but with a long commute one would want to opt for the 1.6 to save on gas mileage. Driving mostly on the highway, I average about 43 MPG (more than that during the winter when the a/c gets turned off). Who needs gas/electric hybrids when you own this little car? Similar Products Used: I also drive a 97 Volkswagen Golf (only a thousand dollars more than the 200 SX-SE), and the Nissan pales in comparison to the Bavarian beast. If you have the extra cash opt for the German engineering, you're morning drive will turn into a little piece of heaven. |

Strength:
IT'S NOT A CIVIC OR INTEGRA, pretty fast (I have the 140hp SE-R), silky engine feels a lot more expensive than it it is, fit and finish, a real sleeper, lot of room inside for a car this size (I'm 6'2, 210 and fit just fine), warranty, standard traction control on SE-R (track or drag strip, it makes a difference)
Weakness:
5 speed shifter is embarrassingly tall, with stock wheels and shocks it leans in turns, no trunk release on key fob, if you change your own oil the filter is really hard to get to. Looks sort of bland until you start with the add ons I bought the car used in 98 for $13,000 CDN. It had 34,000 kms on it and a year of warranty left. No one wanted it cause they're not particularly popular and for whatever the standard air conditoning was not on this one. The previous owner must have deleted it. I do love this car. I upgraded to 16' wheels and 45 series tires and it corners a whole lot better now. Still want to lower it a little cause the ride height is quite tall. There is an aftermarket for this car but it's small. Basically I love the fact that civic's and integras never see you as much of a challenge until they lock horns with you. While the horsepower numbers are similiar to the honda products the nissan SE-R has 140 torque as well. If one of them trys to take you when you on a roll you can almost always shut 'em down. If you're in the market for this kind a car, find an SE-R and hold on to it dearly. The only reason why I'll be giving up mine is it doesn't fit my lifestyle anymore.
