Love the car, lots of room, drives great
Weakness:
at 113K, engine trouble, repair costs US$ 3000.00, seems to be a known problem. (engine block, radiator, heater, etc.) Besides the outrages repair costs, it's a nice car. I know that at 200K i have to sell the car. Similar Products Used: 1996 Chevrolet Lumina |

Powerfull, and safe.
Weakness:
noisy engine I bought this car for my wife to replace a very dependable ford escort. We had a baby and needed a bigger car. so I got the one I thought would be the safest. Well, about five days after I bought it we were rear ended at 30 mph by a subaru. The car held up great. It paid for itself before I even made a payment. None of us was hurt beyond a stiff neck. It's also been very dependable. I expect to go another 130K in this car. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Very comfortable, safe, reasonably powerful, good stereo sound, not very much maintenance, I kind of like the looks, lots of interior space, great deal compared to others of similar price
Weakness:
Front-end problems (tie-rods, stabilizers), interior light problems that I noticed someone else on this site had, poor trunk design -- you could lie sideways in the trunk, but it isn't deep at all and it's difficult to get anything large inside I like this car alot. I've driven the LS quite bit too, but find the steering in the cheaper GS version much tighter. LS owners like the 200 hp engine too, but I've never had a problem with speed and consider myself a pretty quick driver. It's been pretty reliable, with almost 112,000 km on it now. It's my first automatic and it doesn't seem as slow as I thought it would be. I think there could be more dash storage room. Lifting up that middle console can be a bit of a pain. Similar Products Used: We tried all the similar sized cars and some smaller ones. Our other car is a small Mazda. The Merc was by far the best value. At the time when we bought we didn't know much about the quality though. |

Nothing!
Weakness:
Brakes, Tie rod, Drive axel, Outrageously priced motor mounts, Engine, Transmission, etc., etc., etc., Everytime I get out of the car after driving it I feel like using a missile to blow it to bits. It's like an expensive wishing well, I throw money into it wishing it would run right for at least two weeks, but I'm just being feeble-minded. Usually as one thing is repaired something else breaks. Since I probably won't get a dime out of this peice of crap. FORDS SUCK, THEIR SUBSIDIARY MERCURY SUCKS, FORD SUCKS, sorry repeated myself. FORD SUCKS! Love this car (mostly). Had heard bad things about reliability and handling. Test drove Camry's, Maximas, and many others. Love the way this thing handles and drives. Steering picks up road feel in increased speeds and it is a joy to drive. Good freeway cruiser. I bought it with 23,000 miles and put 90,000 more on. The only thing I have had done (except brakes - needed calipers at 90,000 miles)is take it to a dealer about the interior light staying on. He sprayed it with lubicant and it works fine. I am aself employed rep and drive 40,000 miles per year. I get the transmission fluid changed every 25,000 miles and I think this helps. My mechanic says nobody does. I drove this thing over the worst roads too (Our state allows coal trucks to have 130 tons so we have lousy roads where there is coal) This is one of the best cars I have owned. I actually like the confusing controls. There is button for everything on the radio and it is easy to change the time etc. Cruise control works to the mph. Never 1 or 2 mph off.
Weakness:
Gas light goes on with 3 gallons left. Tank is only 16 gallons (new model has 18 gallon tank)and it doesn't get wonderful highway mileage (26 is the best I get at 75 mph average). If I slow down to 60 or so it gets 30. Trunk is too small for a salesman but is very hard for theives to break into!). Hard to parralel park. Buy one of these! They are giving used ones away because people think they are ugly. I guess they are but it is good reliable transportation. The "Millionaire Next Door" would have one of these. I am going to an auction tomorrow and buy one for my 2 kids to drive. Similar Products Used: Saw one of the crash head-on one day and the driver was up walking in a crash where nobody in the Honda Accord survived. It was flat across the front but no intrusion on the driver cage. The guy was of course dazed and had some burns from the airbag but he was ALIVE! I see a lot of wrecks here and with 3 kids am very concerned about saftey. That is why I first wanted to try one of these. I am glad I did. |

Nice looking car, good engine power, roomy interior
Weakness:
This car was a lemon, vibration/shaking at speeds over 55 mph. Interior rattles, Bought the Mercury Sable on Oct 19 2000. Drove it one day and noticed a front end vibration. I checked the tire presure and noticed all four tires were under deflated ranging 3 to 5 pounds in all 4 tires. I checked the Engine fluid which was low about a 1 Qt. Power stearing fluid was also low. (This is a brand new car). Brought it back to the dealer who balanced the tires and filled the fluids. Picked the car up and noticed the same vibration. Brought it back again and they changed all 4 wheels and tires, than they replaced the rotors. Picked up the car 2 days later. Now the car had a very loud grinding noise when braking. Brought it back again and they replced the brake pads. Picked up the car the next day and my family and I took it for a long ride. The brakes were fine but the car still had a vibration at speeds over 55mph. I replaced the stock Affinity Firestone with much better Toyo tires but still the same problem.I brought the car back to the dealer and he balanced the tires again but still the same problem. I called Ford Motors several times. The car was in the shop 2 weeks out of the 3 weeks I owned it. Brown Daub did everything they could to try to cure the problem but was unable to. They even gave me 3 loaner Ford Focus cars while the car was in the shop. My wife and I fell in love with the Focus. Ford Motors wound up buying back the Mercury Sable and we bought the Ford Focus Instead. We Love the Focus and continue to do business with Brown Daub Ford because of their outstanding service. I will write a review on my New Focus in about 2 months, but it appears to be a Similar Products Used: 93 Ford Escort, 99 Ford Escort, both were reliable but compact, 1997 Ford Aerostar, reliable but many interior rattles. 2001 Ford Focus which I bought as a replacement for the Sable, I Love my new Focus best car I ever owened. |

Strength:
It was like a big luxury car, but a cheaper version of one. It had all of the options. Digital displays. The car was very sturdy.
Weakness:
Hmm where should I start!! Well (1) before we got rid of this car it was only 3 years old. It had rust all over the hood, the fenders, and on the doors. (2) The engine would over heat all of the time (3) you'd be driving down the road and the trunk would always be popping open, and you'd have to pull off of the road and tie it down so it wouldn't open any more(4) stock radio stunk (5) Alternator went bad (6) water pump went bad (7) car had a very good tendency to stall all the time (8) seats would stain easily (9) transmission replaced twice, the last transmission would slip in every gear and it was impossible to get the car above 45 mph (10) the engine sounded absolutely terrible. But what can I expect from it??? it's a Ford Product. and NO the car was not abused in any way it only had 80,000 miles all of which were highway miles. I would not recommend this car to anyone at all!!!! stay away at all costs!!! Similar Products Used: nothing as bad as this car, so I have nothing to compare it to. |

Looks Nice Rides Well when it is roadworthy.
Weakness:
Brakes, Rotors, and Tie Rods went out at 22K, Digital Instruments completely quit by 70K but until then had a tendency to read 88MPH at a dead stop! Auto Climate Control completely quit by 59K, Transmission turned to Ca Ca by 65K and was really expensive to fix. Went through tires faster than I could earn the money to buy new ones, alignment never tracked in a straight line. Cruise control quit when instrument panel quit (obviously), Dented really easy, Can't fit my hands between any two engine parts to do 90% of my own work. Overheated several times which eventually warped the heads and engine block (really really expensive to fix) Lincoln/Mercury badgered me into quick fixes and repairs I didn't need on more than one occasion. Keyless entry lost its mind a long time ago. Water pump went south as much as the brakes and front end parts did. Don't even think of owning one of these nightmares Similar Products Used: 1998 Ford Taurus SE, 1997 Pontiac Bonneville, 1992 POntiac Grand Prix, 1993 Toyota Camry LE V6 |

Strength:
At first I loved this car!
Weakness:
However, we have had the vehicle for 9 months and it has 54,000 miles on it and the transmission went out while on a trip with our 16 month old son. Also, one of the back windows will not roll down. There are times when the vehicle will die when stopped at a stop sign or when putting the car into drive. For the price paid on this vehicle, it doesn't pay to have to spend $2,000 to fix the transmission at only 54,000 miles. I would not recommend this vehicle. Similar Products Used: None |
