Strength:
Good ride and handling, Just the right size for me, and GS offered nice power features. Pretty reliable car. I had good treatment from the dealer service my car, even though I didn''''t but it from them.
Weakness:
Weak 4 cylinder, and a faulty ac switch, and I guess all the recalls, but my car needed mosrly reg. maintence. I traded it, I miss it now. Low resale value I really like the car when I bought as a demo model, and thought it was the right size for a single guy. It had sporty handling and nice brakes. I also had the antilock brakes which were a plus. I wish that I had waited for the V6 though. Similar Products Used: Own a 1999 Olds Intrigue |

Strength:
Great pick-up (when it actually drives forward), reverse - no problem!! Great sporty look, comfortable
Weakness:
Transmission - BIG TIME - electrical system, trunk lights leak, coolant light and fan constantly coming on, many recalls from what I have researched!!! Purchased used with 94000 km. I love the way the car handles. Smooth riding, very comfortable. Love the V6! Looks good. Unfortunately, not even 5 months after purchasing this car, the transmission went. Mind you, the car drives great in reverse! Barely has 113000km. During the rebuilding of the transmission I asked our mechanic to check the starter as we have had trouble starting the car, turns out we also need a new starter and fly wheel! So, $2347.14 later, I am hoping nothing else is wrong! Of course there was no extended warranty on this car - go figure. I do love the car, but from what I have heard since purchasing it, really scares me! My mechanic is checking my brakes - which have never seemed right - the engine fan (coolant light is constantly coming on although the coolant is topped up), the seal on the back door has come completely off, the shocks seem to be MIA, and there is a leak in the lights which are on the trunk! If it rains, I can add soap to my trunk and have a bath!! Also, the electrical system seems to have a mind of it''s own. Sometimes the driver''s side window works, sometimes not! Once it comes out of the shop, it has to go into the dealer for the front coil spring recall!!! AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Sad thing is, I really love this car! Gas mileage, handling, looks and comfort.
Weakness:
I haven''t found any yet. I like this car. I have had no problems with it at all. Only maintainence is an oil change. It gets good mileage and got me to work in 10" of snow (with no aid from a snow plow). Similar Products Used: Mercury Tracer 1992. I have put over 120,000 miles on this car. |

Strength:
1. The V6 DOHC engine is great! 2. Nice comfortable seats 3. Roomy back seat 4. Spacious trunk 5. Feels very sporty to drive ( I have the 5-speed)
Weakness:
1. No trunk light (maybe this was removed before I got it???) 2. Only one cup holder 3. Door locks are VERY easy for small kids to reach in back! I bought this car (used) with 74,000 miles on it. It runs great, looks great, and the seats are a lot nicer than my little 1995 Escort I just had! There is no problem with paint chipping that was being reported, dash lights, etc. Similar Products Used: Ford Escort, Dodge Neon, Toyota Tecel |

Looks good, Power, i have the V6 and it handles well
Weakness:
Trans mission, brakes, steering, recalls, You name it. I bought it as a demo in 99. A nice car to drive when you can. Not very reliable. It has only tried to kill me three, Catasphopic brake failure coming down a mountain, power steering failure in traffic and complete transmission failure going up a hill. Transmission went at 42K miles. It took the Ford Dealership two months to fix it. They even blew the first rebuilt tranny they put in and it took them three tries to properly hook up the starter I bought extended warranty but they wouldn''t honour it because the dealership couldn''t tell them why the transmission blew. The car has spent over 74 days in the shop for repairs since I got it. We did regular maintenance every 3K and I reported problems with the transmission on numerous occasion but nothing much was found until the transmission blew completely The only reason I still have it is I can''t offered to take the $5000 loss. If it was reliable and did come with a fistfull of recall I would love it Similar Products Used: Escort, Cavalier, Corolla, Taurus, Neon. I have had to drive a lot of rental cars because of the Mystique Reliability problems |

Safety is a big consern of my because of my child. And I feel this car is a hazzard waiting to happen. I have done nothing but fight with Ford on this car. The cat converter went out 3 times, trunk leads water, have to ride with my high beam head lights on to see, wiring problems, spent $500.00 on the air, heat went out, back window power broke, cup holder broke, tail lamp socket went bad, paint is peeling and the gas tank lid sticks. I have had many recalls on this car and it has been in the shop more then on the road. I am afraid of it now I have a small child and I smell gas from the car when I drive it. I fear it someone hits us we will blow up. We should all take Ford to court and make them pay us for this piece of junk!!! Similar Products Used: I don''t know I have never drove a lemon. I have always drove Hondas and why I stopped I will never know. Going back to Honda where service is a pleasure and the car never stops running. |

it doesn''t run! it falls apart! I call this car my Mercury Mistake! What a nightmare. The check engine lights never been off since I purchased it - even under warranty the dealer couldn''t figure it out. I did not get reimbursed for repairs that were later recalled (but I''m still trying!). Right now I''m reduced to driving a 90 Geometro (still runs like a dream compared to the Mercury). The list of problems are too long - my favorite is the dome light that fell out twice while I was driving & hit me in the head (maybe that''s why I still have it).Now the engine''s blown at 80 k (miles) - I''d rather pay an attorney than a mechanic at this point. Looks very sporty.

Many electrical problems, windows work sporatically, trunk leaks water, heater switch,a/c,sensors,cant keep tires on it,radiator fan, auto shifter gets stuck, fuel door to tank sticks, engine idle slows when anything electrical is used,99% all parts are dealer only items including the thermostat,I will stop here, however the list is much longer!!!!!!!!!!! This car is sitting idle in need of repair more than it runs.I have decided to put a new engine in my 1987 Aerostar van and cut this car loose.this is a 4 door gs model. Strengh does not come into play with this particular car im afraid....
Weakness:
THE CAR Heres a list of the problems we have had: 1, heater fan switch 2, peeling paint 3, a/c broken 4, auto traction causes transmission to shift really hard (not recommended for people with back or neck problems? 5, cup holders are broken 6, the side door light reflectors broke instantly because their in the same route as the path of the seat belt. 7, oxygen sensor is causing the engine light to keep coming on for no reason 8, it is harder on fuel as the space shuttle 9, i blew the engine at 130, 000 kms ( i guess i should be happy i bet everybody else blew theirs before 100k 10, tires last 1 year due to the bad alignment 11, glove box latch broke 12, im on my second water pump 13, and heres a classic there is no light behind the dash clock. (engineering disaster) This model cant be called a lemon. Lemons have a usefullness they go good in some drinks. You can find these cars at the dollar store. Does hell mean anything to you. This car has been an experience unlike any other. Where would a person begin to start? Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Good gas mileage. Comfortable seats.
Weakness:
Not reliable, AND not easily serviced. A really nice combination. Basically, a fussy, fragile car. My summation would be that it is well designed, but engineered far beyond Ford''s ability to put it together properly. In two years, I have experienced an incredible amount of grief while my friends'' Mazdas, Toyotas, etc are running fine. Add to this the constant parade of service "programs" and recalls, and I have very little faith in the car. The highlights: Two (yes, 2!) automatic transmission rebuilds ($1800 at 80K, and $2400 at 101K), constant front end alignements, a $600 brake repair, fragile dashboard vent hardware, tempremental keyless entry and water leaks into the trunk. Special note to the dealers -- each dealer I have been to in the Calgary area has been its own special horror show. ONE: Dealer #1 wouldn''t stand behind it''s pre-purchase inspecion when the automatic transmission failed 6 weeks after the inspection. TWO: Dealer #2 misdiagnosed the pooched transmission as wheel bearings and brake problems, performed that wrong work and then expected me to pay for it. THREE: Dealer #3 tried to charge me for recall work, and wasn''t interested in looking at the car beyond doing the recall work. Similar Products Used: My two Mazda 626''s were miles ahead of this one. My Volvo 240 was cheaper to repair, and at least the dealer gave a hang. |
