Strength:
Looks great, love the leather seats. Has a lot of power and handles nice.
Weakness:
Reliability...has none! See above for list of the rest. If anyone has come up with any solutions for the problems, please let me know. Purchased my used Cougar in Nov 2002. Was great for about a month and then the problems started to occur. The biggest problem is that is won't start. It turns over, but won't ignite. No rhyme or reason to it, just never know when this will happen. I have had it towed to 2 different dealers and it starts when it gets there. Neither of them have been able to get it fixed. They think they do, but I know better. It stranded me today so I'm about to have it towed for the 3rd time (3rd time in under 3 mos, hope it's not a trend). Also, the CD changer hasn't worked since I got it. It skips going over bumps and then will just stop, come back on, stop and so on. It makes me not want to use the CD. Havn't even had this problem looked at yet. The clutch doesn't seem to engage smoothly either, clunks when trying to engage into gear. The brakes also seem to squel a lot. Very annoying. I have never had so many problems with a used vehicle before. Similar Products Used: I'm really beginning to miss my 2000 Saturn. |

Looks cute

EVERYTHING ELSE I HATE my 1999 Cougar. It is such a piece of junk. I bought it brand new in May 1999 and have had nothing but problems since. Throughout the entire time owning it I have maybe driven it a total of 2 years, thats because it has been in the shop for one thing or another combined almost 2 years. BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, 3 STEREOS, CUPHOLDER BROKE, RECLINER BROKE, BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, ELECTRICAL WIRING, WIRING HARNESS(4), ....WIRING WIRING WIRING WIRING. And none of the mechanics ever fixed the problem, the just put a bandaid on them. MARLOW MOTOR service center SUCKS!!!! "the customer is always right", YEAH RIGHT not there. Please if anyone has had these problems or any problems with thier 1999 MERCURY COUGAR please email me. dreynolds1980@aol.com THANKS |

Sweet looking car, handles well. Big hatchback area.
Weakness:
This car is like one of those snap together models. Everthing is so chinsey and just snaps on, no screws nothing. Cup holder sucks, always spills when you turn a corner. Rides rough. Everything rattles and squeaks. Made very cheap. Please dont be fooled by its looks, its a piece of junk! My Cougar had been in the shop every two months for the last 2 years. Just when you think you have all the bugs out something else goes wrong. As a matter of fact I'm taking it in next week to get the cadilatic converter replaced. Besides that, all that I have to replace now is the tires that cost an arm and a leg because the size is so rare. I can remember bringing the car in the next week after I bought it. Lets see....it started with moisture in the headlight then went to getting the shifter fixed (twice)because you would have to jam it into park, speakers cutting in and out, tie rod, wheel bearings, module (got stuck in 3rd gear and its an automatic), constant vibration from supposedly "new" tires that Dutler Ford sold me, check engine light, coolant light, transmission fluid leak, power steering fluid leak, and thats just the stuff I can remember. Whats worse is that the dealership (DUTLER FORD-BEWARE!) I bought the car from knew this car was junk and still sold it to me. The technicians were so inexperience that I would have to bring it in at least twice for them to figure out the problem. I think most of the time they thought it was all in my head but in the end there was in fact a problem. They will charge you for everything they possibly can, no lie. Just a word of advice DONT BUY A COUGAR AND DONT BUY ANYTHING FROM DUTLER FORD IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. Similar Products Used: Used to have a Ford Probe. Recommend dont buy any Ford Products. |

Strength:
Very stylish, very nice interior, lots of good options for a very low price on the sports and 35th anniv. editions, good looking rims, a decent V-6 with good gas milage.
Weakness:
Stiff front seats on both fabric and leather versions, back seat space is small, and ABS should be standard for all of the sports model not extra. I advise everyone not to base your car choice on user reviews. Just because someone writes that they have had a problem with a car does not mean that every model/make has that problem. I have had my Cougar since September of 2002. I only had to take it in for one thing so far and that was just to replace the side turn signal covers because condesation was building up under the covers. That is it. I put A LOT of miles on my car each month. 3,000 each month to be exact and I have yet to have a single problem. Everything on the car works fine. When it comes to cars it is the luck of the draw. I have owned Honda Civics before (the supposed most reliable cars on the market). One had no problem and one had several problems, both were brand new. Not every car out of the factory is going to be perfect. Similar Products Used: None. |

Strength:
Appearance, good acceleration, nice trunk room, quality stereo-CD.
Weakness:
The cupholder is not my favorite and seatcovers are hard to find that would make it a little more comfortable to sit in. I started out 2002 with a manual 2000 Cougar. It was a nice car, but the automatic is a better fit for me. So the dealer was gracious enough to find a similar one(1999) automatis with 30,000 miles on it. I have had very few problems with my Cougar.Almost all of the repairs were cover by an extended warranty. I am realy enjoying this car. Similar Products Used: Ford Probe, Mustang, |

Good pickup very quick car!
Weakness:
Everything else about the vehicle. Not reliable at all! 1998 Geo Prism for $9,000 was better made and drove better. Thats pretty sorry for a mercury product! I HATE MERCURY!This car is such a joke. From the first hour after I bought it I had problems! The hatch was not closing at all! Continual problem. Front windshield airvent conintually pops out, seams are wrippled.Found out I have specialty tire which cost a fortune, oxygen censor replaced, numerous parts falling off, and NOW ENGINE MAKING TWO DIFFERENT EXTREMELY LOUD HUMMING NOISES!!This is after replacing gaskets. The front cup holders tip and dump whatever drink you have in it ON YOU!!Mercury dealership gave the worst service! And when I tried to tell them it was a lemon things got ugly! Cannot wait to sell this piece of garbage and would like to beat the snot out of the vehicle. Will never buy a mercury/ford product again. It might look really nice, but this car should be scrap metal!! Also the air vents in the dash spit out this black dust that sticks to your clothing or seats and does not come off easily, have and air filters checked and that didn't fix it. Ride it terrible for anything over half an hour. Automatic shifter doesn't stay in gear very well. All kinds of warning lights continually stay on was told of computer problem with car by Mercury after is was not covered to due to warranty expiring after certain amout of mileage! (How convient!) The words I want to describe this car with I can't even type! Sent numerous surveys into Mercury about this car with terrible reviews and got no where. Strength:
It's a sharp looking car on the outside and inside. The V6 has good acceleration. A cougar with leather, sunroof, v6 engine, 17 inch alloy wheels, 6 cd changer, and power drivers seat is a lot less in price than most cars offering that.
Weakness:
I think a lot of cars could kick the cougars ass in a race. Can't see just about anything when you're backing up. When I first got my cougar, I loved it. I thought it was a sharp looking car with a lot of extra interior features for the money. Sadly, a lot of things changed my opinion. Sometimes when I got to crank my car, it sounds like it's not gonna go. There are a lot of rattling noises and when I turn my heat on it makes the loudest raquest for the first few seconds. AND I have bubbles everywhere in my windshield. I don't think I'll buy a ford product again. I've only had this car for 3 1/2 months and a year's worth of headaches. Similar Products Used: None..I did have a 2000 Altima for two years..no problem with it. |

OTHER THEN THE THREE LISTED IN STRENGTHS WHATS NOT A WEAKNESS.....WHEN YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR YOU EXPECT IT TO PERFORM.... I have had this thing they call a car. For about four years now.. 1 recall for the ABS 2 oxygen sensor 3 starter 4 fly-wheel 5 ignition/key can be removed without tranny being in park. 6 radio/ did work most of the time. dealer of course did not find a thing wrong...now it is gone..Fuse?NOT.... 7 now the tranny starting to slip 8 the little things;coolant light(its full)stays on when cold. latch for the hatch(that goes without saying). floor mat( good for one week). front defroster plastic cover(it does not like the cold) pops out.etc...(list to long...) I had a dream when I bought this thing...So far all I've gotten is the bills...I wish I could get my old 72 Cougar back that was,, excuse is a car. Signature Ford the keeps tell me they can not find nothing wrong..does not help matters(brakes, radio, etc.) CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE X-TENDED WARRANTY COVERS..BECAUSE I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING..UNLESS I THREATIN THEM WITH A LAWYER...VERY FRUSTRATING THAT FORD HAS NO RESPECT FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS OR THEIR PRODUCTS......NEVER AGAIN.... Similar Products Used: In 1985 I bought a brokedown 72cougar with 351 clevland as its heart.I took some blood, sweat and a little cash.. that was a real car... |

The LOOKS, it's definately got the looks! Reliability, Acceleration, Gas Mileage Sleek Interior
Weakness:
The Cup Holder, some minor rattle/vibration while resting at stop lights (what car doesn't?) Whoa! I was shocked to uncover the many problematic reviews posted on this site dealing with the new model Mercury Cougar. I've been driving my used '99 Mercury Cougar I4 for close to two years now, and have had almost none of the problems mentioned on this site. I purchased my silver cat in early 2001, and have put almost 35k miles on it in that amount of time. I service the car regularly and have only had to put a good set of tires on her to keep her running smoothly. This car has been PURR-FECT! Similar Products Used: no previous car has performed of this calibur, I definately got my money's worth with my cat! |
