Strength:
Out side looks..
Weakness:
water leaks. riding, gas mileage.. leaks... and more leaks... Ford company! This is the WORST purchase I have ever made. The car has caused me nothing but problems. The car has leaked from every possible area. The dealership has terriable customer service skills and the GM is even worse!!! Forget about the ford dispute board, that takes too long... I do not reccommend this car for anyone!!! |

Strength:
I loved the way my cougar looked. When it worked it was a fun car.
Weakness:
Almost everything. The ford dealership was not helpful. This car made me go crazy. I had my cougar for a little over 3 years. It gave me many problems (5 alternators and 3 fuel pumps, sunroof, air conditioning, coolant light, theres more but not as important). I had to be towed 4 times. Most of these problems happened while the car was under warranty, but the lateset cost were about $900 out of pocket. My mother had a cougar also. She had no problems what so ever. I really would advise someone to rethink the purchase of a cougar, because you really don't know what you will get. I recently traded the car in for a Saturn Vue. Hopefully I will have better luck. Similar Products Used: If I was buying a car like the cougar again I would look at the Honda Civic. Its not as pretty, but it actually works. |

Cougar Ultimate 35th Anniversary Ed.
Strength:
Unique styling with the Anniversary Package. Solid ride, good performance, nice fit for most drivers. Affordable, but not cheap! Leather interior is very comfortable and unique. (two tone silver/black) Safe product in the Ultimate trim. (side airbags, ABS, Traction Control) Dealers are willing to deal, and a huge ($3000) rebate. Gets envious looks from jealous dads in minivans (I drove Jeep products for 12 years prior) I'm the hero of the soccer car-pool! Dealership seems to be reasonable to deal with.
Weakness:
Have to park way too far away from other cars to avoid door dinks, and I still got one...$75 to pop out! Costing a fortune in car washes. One small issue; there is more brake dust than I expected...may replace pads at some time. Not a big problem, though. Will probably install a K&N air filter to boost the performance and fuel milage slightly, but both are very acceptable as is. Have owned this gem for just about a month now. Can't believe it got such bad reviews! I would definitely recommend getting the 35th anniversary edition; won't find many others like it! It fits me like a glove (six-foot guy) and has been a pleasure to own and drive. About the cupholders; yeah, they won't hold double big gulps, but they hold most anything else. Great stereo, nice seats, solid engine and ride that's firm, but not punishing. Dealers will just about give these away, if you can find them (there's a handfull in the St. Louis area.) I purchased an extended warrenty from the dealer based on some of these reviews, so I'm covered for the length of my loan. This is my mid-life crisis car, and I baby it more than I probably should. Recommend the Laser Red, looks great when clean! Would also recommend PeopleFirst for your loan; got a great rate for financing and was able to deal like a cash buyer. Was approved on-line in about 20 minutes, and had the check in hand the next day for $15 extra. Was able to keep the rebate ($3000 Similar Products Used: Looked at the Jeep Liberty (wouldn't deal) and the Mazda Tribute (questionable quality) Almost bought a PT Cruiser (the wife tried, but couldn't come to grips with it!) Owned a Jeep Grand Cheroke |

Strength:
I love the way it looks, which got me into this mess.
Weakness:
See above comments It was the first time I bought a used car and assumed I had quite a deal for the dollar. The car only had 8,000 miles on it. The back window casing blew off, the back window "heaters" stopped working, gas pump broke and now it is making noises like a "fog horn" when I turn....any ideas what that might be. I do feel like I have been ripped off. Similar Products Used: No, it was the first time I purchased a Mercury. |

Great Handling Quick Stylish Customizable
Weakness:
Only weakness is the back seats. I could not fit some of my bigger friends in the back. I don't know why so many people are against cougars. The car is a stylish, quick and reliable car. I bought mine with 29,000 miles and evrything was fine. The car is also very customizable and great with handling. I don't know what the other people are talking about but nothing has happened and i don't know about that lady that said she hears a noise when the temperature is below 50. I live in Pennsylvania where the temperatures sometimes in spring are 40+below. It is also very spacious for the driver. I am 6'4 and i have no problem getting in and out of it. |

Looks good. Fast engine. Plexi glass bumper is great when you get rear ended-it just bounces back
Weakness:
See above I feel so much better now that I hear that other people have problems with their cougars! This car truly is a piece of CRAP! I got it new about three years ago, ran well for the first week, then the automatic windows/door locks broke. Was in the shop 19 times for other problems- when it was covered under warranty, now that it's not covered I prefer not to count how many times it goes into the shop. Things that have gone wrong: -windows/door locks broke -air conditioneing broke (I live in AZ) -had to replace stereo -the #3 button on stereo doesn't work and will occasionally shut itself off -gas cap broke -engine light would repeatedly blink -engine coolant light will illuminate often -trunk wont open well -Gas gauge isn't accurate, left me stranded twice with supposedly 1/4 tank -brakes have been replaced 3 times, and they still squeal -Does any one else hear a sloshing noise when they brake? Dealer can't hear it! The guy has got to be deaf! I am sure there were many more things, I believe I am just blocking them out now. I need to sell this thing immediately-any body want to buy my cougar? Similar Products Used: 1998 basic Nissan pickup. I couldn't hurt that thing! I ran into the garage wall twice with it and the walls had to be re-drywalled, nothing happened to the truck, not even a scratch. I had it two yea |

Looks only.
Weakness:
See above - I'm sure there will be many more to follow. I also loved this car when I first bought it in 1999, but that ended quickly. I have less than 50,000 miles on it and so far I have had to replace the tires, brakes, oxygen sensor, blower motor & fuel pump. I have a loud humming noise whenever the outside temperature is below 50 degrees or so, a light bulb in the dash is out, the hatch latch doesn't work well, and now the sunroof is broken. Since the dealer says the sunroof has broken trim, it is not covered by the extended warranty and they claim the repair would be about $1000, roughly what it would cost to have a new after-market sunroof installed. I have had to bring the car back to the dealer more than once for the same problem every time I've brought it in and I am no longer going there for service, even though it costs me $100 per time to go elsewhere. I would not recommend this car (or the dealer) to my worst enemy! Similar Products Used: Ford Probe - also plenty of problems, but nothing compared to the Cougar. I'm done with Ford products. Strength:
Sleek Euro styling, strong V-6, great gas mileage, excellent handling, cavernous hatch area
Weakness:
Some electrical problems, rear seat passenger room (who needs it anyway) I bought my Cougar new in February 1999 and have had only a few minor problems with it, so I'm baffled by all of the Cougar bashing going on here. Sure, I have had minor problems (Power window relay out and replaced under warranty, sticky trunk release, check coolant comes on a lot, etc.) over time, but nothing unexpected of a first-model-year car; more nuisances than actual problems. After 4+ years and 40k miles, I'm still on the original tires, battery, brake pads, and everything else everyone is complaining about in other reviews. Note also that around 15,000 of those miles were hard, fast miles on German Autobahns, and my auto. transmission still works perfectly. As for the other complaints...the cupholder is fine, I've never had a speck of condensation in headlights or anywhere else, sunroof works fine. Bottomline: For me it's been a sporty, fun-to-drive, reliable, cost-effective vehicle. Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi Eclipse |

Strength:
Good looks inside and out, car feels solid and drive pretty well at high speeds. v6 has nice acceleration (don't usually want to speed up to fast because of transmission knocking though)
Weakness:
mentioned above, have always noticed problems with other friends and families vehicles so nothing too surprising Was thinking about buying a honda civic at first but when i noticed the price and look of the cougar was instantly sucked into it. Bought used in mid 2002, as a first car wanted something sporty which the body style and interior truly show off. Have had a few problems with the car and will soon be taking it back to the dealer ship to replace these parts with warranty. Transmission does not shift easily. when the light comes on i notice that it gets worse sometimes making a knocking noise when moving up a gear. also when putting on reverse the knocking noise is always there. Have the same problems with the defrost plastic and cup holder just like everyone else. Condensation in the front headlights as well, which i don't believe are under warranty. i'll have to look that up. Starter and flywheel are no good. atleast 50 percent of the time the car does not turn when tried, simply grinds. Just a sound i don't want coming out of my car. Water leaks in from passenger side window even though rubber looks secure. Similar Products Used: first vehicle, anyone have recommendations for a next? thinking about a dodge durango |

Strength:
Comfortable seats, good steering, good digital displays such as how many miles till empty, etc.
Weakness:
Too many to list. Had to get almost every part replaced such as transmission, window pane, wiring, and a lot more I don't know the names of. Started to give problems a month after I bought it till today. Remember, it's a FORD-Fix Or Repair Daily. Similar Products Used: None, and hopefully never again. |
