Strength:
Smooth ride, handles well on the highway. Looks great!
Weakness:
The low beam headlights are a little weird but it could just take some getting used to. Handles well with more than enough power. The ES trim is nicely appointed. Mazda has reasonably priced the options to make owning all the bells and whistles affordable. Consumer Reports recommends it and so do I. Similar Products Used: Subaru Legacy |

Weakness:
Never found any Absolutely the best car I''ve ever had, I owned it for three years then let my boyfriend trade it in on something for him and to this day regret it! I now own a 2001 Honda Civic and I am not half as happy with it as I was with my 1998 Protege. Similar Products Used: Ford Escort, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Ford Tempo |

Strength:
Great car. Very happy with it.
Weakness:
Gas mileage is at about 24-25. Lower than others. Great Car! Love the drive for a small car. Very smooth to drive at any speed. Great value for the money! I wanted to buy a economy reliable car that drives the best in this class. So test drove the Sentra, Civic, Corolla and Protege all twice. Liked the Protege the best. automatic not very powerful stereo is crap Got this car used with only 55K mi. Body has some dings as does the interior but what a great driving car! No problems at all as of yet and car drives very smooth and handles well. Had a ''93 that I let go at 130k mi and had no problems with it and I hope this ''95 is the same. A little underpowered but a great second car or primary car. Similar Products Used: ''93 Protege DX-5spd-95 is slower but drives a bit smoother I think. |

Mazda Protege DX
Strength:
Space for it''s size, Last of the real Mazda''s, Since they are Ford now, Reliability, and quality
Weakness:
Freeway acceleration, Stereo has no power... recently changed the stereo to a Kenwood 216S CD player and was amazed at the power the speakers had (And this is the original speakers of the car people!!!), Price of aftermarket parts. This 1st generation Protege was passed on to me after my mother used it from new to 7 years. I''ve had as my car for about a year now and have only experience just maintenance stuff like brakes and tires. The only two major problems that have occured was the whole cooling system was replaced after the radiator cracked. Cost about $500. Then the second was the axles had to be replaced. While cost about $300 but we weren''t upset about paying for it because the car is 8 years old now and has 170K miles on it. I plan on keeping maybe for another couple years until it''s 10 yrs old. Or maybe until it dies. Never had an engine problem. Actually starts better than it did new since I started using Premium gas it in. It never hesitates to start even in cold weather. Then again, I live in California... does it ever get cold here? For a subcompact, it fits people well. Hey, I''ve fit 4 people in the back on a trip to Santa Barbara. Granted it wasn''t the most comfortable ride, it worked... haha It lacks acceleration when getting on the freeway. It''s almost a daily ritual that I pray before getting on the onramp for the car to successfully merge on it. For street driving, it does have decent acceleration. One tip on people who change the brakes..... get the semi metallic ones for the car, any other will cause them to constantly squeak. Especially at low speed. Mazda Protege5
Strength:
Great handling/cornering. Good instrumentation & lighting (Jetta had that cool blue going...but believe it or not the climate controls weren''t illuminated...a serious weakness). Seats are among most comfortable in its class.
Weakness:
Stereo is awful. I''m planning to replace the speakers as a start. The Jetta''s 6-speaker system was far superior, but then the car is more expensive. Also, I miss the Jetta''s variable intermittent wipers. P5, considering its being marketed for the 20-30 group, really needs to upgrade its stereo system. This is my first Mazda and I like it quite a bit so far. I was coming out of a VW Jetta, which I consider better in some ways, not as good in a few others. But I wanted to give my son a car and the Jetta was an automatic...and I wanted a stick! So I shopped Protege5, Elantra GT, Sentra (I''ve owned 2, but not recently) and Civic. The Protege5 draws great reviews on styling from everyone who sees it. It''s a sharp car, and it corners as well as any car I''ve ever had. It''s fun to drive. If you''re looking in the under $20,000 class, this is certainly one to check out. Similar Products Used: Nissan Sentras and a Quest, ''99 VW Jetta |
