Mazda MAZDA6 (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

There are a lot of midsize cars on the road today, but the MAZDA6 is different from all the others in two very significant ways. Most noticeably, it is the only midsize model line to offer three distinct body styles to fit your style and utility needs. More importantly, it is built with a strong emphasis on driving dynamics. As one look at any of the 60-plus international awards the Mazda6 Sports Sedan has received clearly shows, no other model line in the class delivers the ride and handling characteristics near and dear to a driving enthusiast's heart like a MAZDA6.

Appearance and speed. That's seroiusly IT.

Weakness:

Just about everything.

I never thought it was possible for a car to give somebody so many problems. I guess nobody lied when they said, don't buy a car the first year it comes out! Cause that was the mistake I made. I've had break problems, problems with the transmission, audio system...just about everything.

Strength:

audio controls on the steering wheel, hatch, automatic level control for the stereo, handling

Weakness:

low end torque, gas mileage, hard to get the model you want (mine came from VA and I live in PA)

I'm a former 15-year Honda Civic owner so I am biased as far as gas mileage. That's the only major feature I'm not satisfied with on this car. The amount of space in the back is incredible. The Bose sound system is crisp. The car is excellent at passing speeds, but my 2001 Honda could beat it off the line. It's lacking low end torque for sure. It's a heavy car so I expected to have problems taking turns fast like I'm used to doing. The suspension is tight and it definitely responds like a smaller car. The quality inside the car (from the titanium finish to the audio and climate controls) is as good as my Honda's was. I think Mazda's changed for the better.

Model Reviewed: Mazda 6 s 5 door

Strength:

Sporty good looks, Awesome Bose sound, good adaptability with hatch back, and supercar handling. An all-around safe car with the power and agility to escape potential trouble and splendid braking and air bags to minimize damage.

Weakness:

Lack of 2 position memory on power drivers seat, front leg room might be tight for 6'+ folks, not sure of quality of faux-titanian trim used in interior.

My wife and I spent a lot of time researching and testing several mid-sized autos. They included; 04 Acura TL, 04 VW Passat 3.0, 04 Honda Accord EXV6, 04 Nissan Maxima, 05 Nissan Altima, along with the Mazda 6 we ended up buying. All the cars we tried were great vehicles and were a joy to drive after spending 4 years in an Expedition. We liked the styling and features of the TL and Passat but thought they were too pricy. The Maxima was a little goofy looking and we could not find the Altima in the color we wanted. We liked the Accord but there are so many around you see yourself too often. The Mazda 6 was a unique (in our area) automobile that combined lively performance, sports car handling, stunningly good looks, and at a price less than any of the others. To us it was a no-brainer. We have driven the 6 for a little over a month and we love the prospect of each trip. No problems whatsoever and are finding new delights each time. Our car was equipped with leather, sport package, Bose system, side and curtain air bags, automatic transmittion, in the Blazing Copper color. We have had innumerable complements on the color and styling. After putting a few miles on our 6 we have found out that Mazda's zoom zoom advertising campaign is right on the money. From dodging traffic on multi-lane interstates to twisty windy roads out in the lake country near us the 6 hugs the road and practically anticipates our next command. The leather upholstery is finished nicely, the seats are comfortable and the room is adequate (after the Expedition anything seems small though!). We love the hatch back access and the massive capacity it contains. Our Expedition was huge, but our 6 seems to be able to hold everything that we need it to with its fold down rear seats. We are very pleased with the mileage (23-24) along with the power of the motor. We are a couple of middle aged, almost empty nesters that still have a love of life and were not ready to settle for the typical boring sedan. This car fits us perfectly. It you are looking for a practical family sedan combined with an outrageous "Fast and Furious" sports car this is the one for you.

Weakness:

doesn't seem to have any....

Just bought this car, I have owned 10 autos in the past few years, including a 2000 mustang gt with leather and traction control...But my new mazda so far is the overall best car i have had the pleasure to drive....I bought mine loaded with the sport package, bose sound package and the comfort package....I am into the import tuner scene and it fits right in with the scene. I had thought about the focus svt, but after reading the very poor reviews and driving the mazda there was no comparison...The mazda has awesome space, beautiful leather, and awesome styling...The shifting of the manual is close to perfection...One of ,if not the best i"ve ever driven....So stand back honda, toyota, Or dare i say it Bmw....Here comes the next generation of perfection....ZOoom, Zoom.............Zoom

Strength:

Fast, agile, handles like a dream, great acceleration, nifty auto shifter, looks great. Good base stereo, reasonable gas mileage, nicely finished. Good looking, fast, mommy-to-be-mobile. Massive trunk. Power driver's seat. Plenty of room for everyone.

Weakness:

Rear spoiler could do with a center support - it's a bit flimsy. Cup holders in the doors don't hold tall coffee! Would have liked one touch up and down front windows. (I'm reaching here... I have very few issues with this car!)

Bought this car instead of a Nissan Altima once I realized my husband's employee discount would give it to us below invoice. Add in the 0% financing and I was sold. Love this car - I think it rivals the BMW 3 series which I was contemplating but which would have put us into the poor house. This car handles beautifully, I've had no problems with it at all. It gets perfectly acceptable gas mileage for a V6 (averages 26mpg). Hauls butt on the freeways. Even my autophile husband said he would buy one if they were only rear-wheel drive (he's too fussy). Bought this car specifically for two reasons. I drive a lot for my work, and often have to take clients out, so I needed something classy looking and comfortable for four adults. And we needed to upgrade from my Nissan 2 door to a 4 door in preparation for starting a family. Hence the necessity of four doors and a massive trunk. Mazda has really outdone itself with this car, and with the introduction of the hatchback and wagon versions, I think the much-beloved (and, for me, rather boring) Accord and Camry have quite the competition.

Strength:

Oodles of power, styling to boot, stellar - flawless handling/ride capability, lots of car for the money, lots of bang for the buck.

Weakness:

With so many strengths, any weaknesses were based upon personal preference for me: Cloth seat material seems to get dirty quickly. Odd seating position for the manual adjusting driver's seat. The car is not available with some color combinations. I wanted Blazing Copper Metallic with tan leather, but have found that only black or gray leather is available for the Copper. If the 6 can also prove to be reliable then there are no weaknesses!

My first experience with the 6 was in Chicago as a rental. I thought, here's a stylish sedan - it'll probably be a nice drive. Then I got behind the wheel and drove it. OH MY STARS, WHAT A CAR! Talk about your ZOOM ZOOM! As soon as I hit I-94 the six launched with the type of thrust that reminded me of the plane ride! Seemingly endless reserves of power, a true leap forward from what I was used to with my (late) Mercury Mystique. When I got to where I was going I had to pop the hood to see if it was a V6, but to my astonishment it was a four. Put your right foot into it and this car goes like stink. BTW, like other reviewers, I found this car to be a bit thirsty. But I can only attribute that to my heavy right foot and this car's sporty nature which inspires a will to ZOOM! Since then I have always gone to Hertz and asked for the Mazda 6. There are simply no words in the English language other than ZOOM ZOOM that can accurately describe this car. Stellar handling, even on wet pavement. Extremely well-controlled motions and road holding; the car feels like a real sports car. Love that Sport AT. A manual would be out of the question for me since I would become well-acquainted with clutch replacement costs. The car is also very quiet whether cruising around town or on the highway. The sporty exhaust under acceleration enhances the sporty nature of this car. When parked at idle I had to remember whether I turned the key! Also, the A/C doesn't sound like a blustery March day adding to the serenity of the cabin. Needless to say, I will be purchasing a Mazda 6 in the near future. Mine will be fully tarted up with all options boxes checked. I will advise purchasing with leather as the cloth seats in all rentals I had seemed to get very dirty, particularly if you have the tan cloth. I will also suggest getting the power driver's seat. I have driven two that did not have it and was disappointed. The manual seat did not rise high enough, and the seat cushion left me feeling as though I would slide down to the floor. The short cushion length conspired to enhance that feeling. With the power unit, one is able to adjust for reach height, and rake. I prefer to sit up high and lean back a bit. The base stereo was more than enough, but since I like all that bass, I will get the Audio Package. The Sport Package adds to the sporty nature. I will also get the V6 with Sport AT. The 160 hp four was astonishing, and the V6 I tested adds a little more ZOOM. I have a concern about the faux-titanium trim. One of my rentals had a noticeable chip on the center console. It looks nice, but is it truly durable. This is a car for those who love to drive and look good doing it! If you're looking for a "safe" or tame alternative you might want to stick with the appliance-like Toyota Camry. If you're looking for more interior space you'll want the Honda Accord or Nissan Altima. Having driven the Altima, though, I will say that the 6 is clearly, far and away the superior automobile. The Altima went fast enough as I had trouble keeping it under 80 mph on the Kansas City highways, but it felt cheap. The plasticky interior was sub-par for the class and the trunk closed with a tinnish CLANG. The A/C sounded like a hurricane EVEN WITH THE STEREO GOING FULL TILT! The radio, BTW, also sounded cheap. I have seen a 6 with navigation, but it was built for a market outside the US. Hopefully that option will make it to these shores one day soon. If you're looking to spice up your daily commute and want a nimble sedan with plenty of verve, run quickly to a Mazda dealer and snap up a nice 6!

Strength:

Performance, styling, affordability.

Weakness:

Some higher quality parts could have been designed in the interior.

To sum it up, the Mazda 6 is the best bang for the buck. I have now been driving it for 7 months and have had no real problems. I bought the 4 cyl. because it suited my pocket book while I had every other option I could in it. The bose system is above average (for stock), and the leather, heat-warmed seats keep my butt warm in the cold Minnesota weather. The car handles like a dream, even on slick surfaces. The only problem I have had were some of the plastic pieces (fuse-box door, interior trunk handle) fell off right away. Oter than that it has been a fabulous investment.

Awesome car; drives like a dream. Very good acceleration with the V6, 5 speed manual. Bose sound system sounds great, especially with the sub-woofer. This is my first car with leather seats and a sunroof. Great value at $23,000. I chose the sepang green color; a real head turner. I received numerous comments on how rich it looks.
