Mazda 626 (1979 - 2002) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Mazda 626 is a mid-size model that carries the authority of being fully imported from Japan. Built to a high standard, it is frequently reported by its owners to be trouble free for years on end.

The Mazda 626 is offered as a four-door sedan with 2 engine options; a 2.0-liter, 125-hp 4-cylinder or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V-6. Also choose between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. ABS is standard.

The 626 replaced the 616/618 and RX-2 in 1979 and was sold through 2002, when the new Mazda6 took over as Mazda's large family car.

Model Reviewed: lx 2.0 auto

Strength:

Leather seats, sound system

Weakness:

Acceleration with automatic is dangerously slow. The tranny went at 79K.

My wife drove this car for two years. I never like it because it was to slow at highway passing and the auto tranny seemed to hesitate. Of course the transmission failed at 79k miles. I soon found out this was a common problem. The car is comfortable with leather and has a nice cd sound system.

Model Reviewed: I-4 626 LX 5-speed manual

Strength:

Sound great @ high RMPs for a puny 4-cylinder, gets great fuel economy w/ 5-speed, smooth ride pretty good handling for a family sedan, great brakes, good power for a 4 cylinder, EXTREMELY LOW wind noise at high speed(55-90)(I would know), very reliable-----GREAT CAR

Weakness:

I had to be really picky to find some weaknesses but they are there--could use a better sound system, cup holders can only hold a can(just barely).....Thats it!

This is my first car and bought it from a used car lot. I paid $2500 for it. It had 106,000 miles on it and had been in 1 accident w/ the previous owner. It was a right front offset collision in which both front airbags deployed. The body and mostly everything was fixed. The car has been really reliable accept for 1 small problem. The check engine light keeps coming on at random. It has done it about 3 times in the past month. When it does come on it turns off the next time I refire the car. When it is on I do not notice and decrease in power or anything. Other than that the car has been great. It has never had anything to be fixed in over a year since i bought the car. It now has 113,000 miles and is still running great.

Strength:

Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Mentioned above. I bet the transmisson will be on the recall list one day!

My friend had no problems with the car, but once i got it, man!!! The transmission, went out less than 2 months. It's a small person type car, as far as getting in and out of the drivers seat. Steering wheel doesn't adjust high enough. Good trunk space, but hey, who rides in the trunk? My 91 ford w/145,000 miles runs better.

I bought my mazda because of the foreign car reputation for toughness but boy did i get fooled. I have had it with the 24/7 maintenance that it has cost me and i still end up with problems i have never been able to enjoy this car and would never tell anybody to buy one unless they find themselves having money they can burn or a back up GMC vehicle to get you around when your mazda is broken maybe mazda should offer a service warranty for the life of the vehicle so that they can see the problems we customers have and they want us people to buy their new products when they dont even make the customer happy with there old product well if mazda keeps up their reputation for junk then they wont have to worry about it I switched from gm to mazda for the foreign reputation but i will be going back to gm if i continue the high maintenance bacause i never had this many problems with chevrolet. come on mazda back up your product and keep your customers happy or you will never be able to conquer chevy in toughness mazdas are for ballerinas not for cowboys.

Strength:

Good size interior, especially for a family car. Good trunk space. I like that it had adjustable seatbelts for shorter members of the family. It also was had good acceleration, both from stop and when passing on the highway.

Weakness:

Transmission: not well made. I understand that Ford makes the transmissions. If I had known that before I purchased the car I would not have bought it.

How doubts after test drive about transmission, but was reasured that the hesitation was normal for an automatic (as I hadn't driven an automatic in sometime, I was inclinded to believe the dealership.) Puting the car into reverse was hard, and sometimes you had to wait a few seconds before it caught. O/D light began to come on just around Christmas time, when driving on the highway. We took the car into an independant mechanic who asseset that the transmission was shot and need to be either rebuilt, or replaced.

TRANSMISSION IS NOT COMPATIBLE AND DESIGNED TOTALLY WRONG - FAILS NO MATTER HOW MANY REPLACEMENTS BECAUSE FORDS FLUID PRESSURE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MAZDA ENGINE.

BLACK FLUID, LEAKS! PREINSTALLED FORD TRANNY FLUID PRESSURE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE MAZDA ENGINE SPECS!!!! THEY DESIGNED IT WRONG AND KNOW PERFECTLY WELL THERES A MAJOR PROBLEM, AT MAZDA!! NONE My first car.

Weakness:

Transmission,Overdrive, Fuse Box, Engine, The Entire Car. Car's Transmission should have been recalled. Mazda and Ford knew of this problem and I think that it shows very bad character to let customers fork out 2K to fix a problem that should have never been.

TRANSMISSION.................... I had this car 5 months before the transmission started going out on me.If I turned my radio up too loud, the door locks would lock and unlock and the lights would dim as if the car was demon posessed. The engine would tick constantly, and the air conditioner would pull on the transmission so I could not run the air. A VERY HOTTTT Summer.

Strength:

Reliable Enough room for tall person im 5'11' More quiet that protege on highway. That is important. 4 disc brakes

Weakness:

Engine rev. high at 60 mph in 5 th gear so 75mph cruising is $$$ Some plastic are cheap. Eh this is not a BMW!!!

Cannot say that this is a bad car. 65000km on it without serious problem. Had to change plastic mudflap (all) They broked in snow. No abs no automatic, I dont have those trouble. The V6 is strong at high RPM only (4800rpm+) and can rev. up to 7000 almost! Nice with a 5-speed to pass... But keeping the rpm high mean high fuel consuption. I will replace the brake in few 2-3k for the first time so they are not that bad. My next car??? HONDA or ACURA or HONDA or ACURA !!!

Transmission, customer service by Mazda

I bought this car new in 1996, I liked the styling and the good name in Mazda. I am a previous owner of an 85 626 with 230000 miles at trade in. This car was great until I dropped a Trasmission at 26000 miles and the valves started tapping. I am very religious about maintenance on my vehicles. Tune-ups and tranny maintenance. I am now about to spend 1800.00 on my fourth transmission and my car only has 93000 miles on it. I understand between 94 and 01 they used a ford tranny (CD4E otherwise known as the LA4A-EL by Mazda) on all 4 cylinder 626's. The problem is caused by a defect by the manufactor (Ford) and the kind of application used by Mazda. High line pressure blows out the drums inside the Tranny and can be recognized by a very high pitched whine come from the pump. I am now going to donate this car to a wrecking yard because I dont wish these problems on anyone.
