Strength:

Creatur Comforts, like leather and cd player is more affordable in the hyundai. Our 99' Accent is an INCREDIBLE little car with not one problem. Warranty hasn't ever been used, b/c the Accent is awesome, even at 80K!!!

Weakness:

Bad alignment, problems with toe-in and camber angles...read the Technical Service Bulletin (like a recall) Paint scratches. MPG is only 18-19 (should be 24-33). Automatic tranny clunks from Reverse to Drive and vice versa. Don't BUY!!!

We have owned a 2002 GT Hyundai Elantra for 2 weeks, but it has been in the shop for the 8th day and still sits. It only has 300 miles on it. Problem with toe-in and camber (alignment), the wheel pulls right upon acceleration and left with braking. Speedomter cable squeaks, paint scratches (poor quality paint I think), MPG is only 18-19 (probably b.c of the bad alignment.) I am pursuing the Lemon Law for reimbursement. But if you have similar problems, there is a Technical Service Bulletin for this alignment problem. Some other years and models have similar problems (hyundai), but the aligment is way off and dangerous! Not to mention very bad for tires, they wear out SO fast!!! The dealer isn't sure what to do about the were going to send it to an alignment specialist but didn't return my calls when I requested to know WHERE they were taking it. This is outrageous!!!

New look,gas mileage,handling,and creature comforts

I have had this car for approx. 5 months, and I bought it used. It had 6,000 miles and was an automatic with sunroof. I drove it at a Dodge dealership and was pleased with how it handled. It's no speed demon but is quick enough for what it is meant for, and with gas prices increasing,it is nice to have a vehicle that has good gas mileage.I bought it used, the vehicle had a clean history, with the vehicle production of November of 2001, and I figure the dealership got it on trade and wanted it off the lot for whatever reason. There price $8900.00. I could not sign the papers quick enough. I have had only good fortune with it and am looking forward to further usage. It is a sound and reasonable (price) vehicle. The look is an improvement over prior years,I would buy another, although I hope it is not for quite some time.

Strength:

• Nice size, better leg room than many compact cars. • Placement of dash controls is well thought out. • Count 'em — six cup holders and none of them placed to leak on your dash controls! • Decent-sized wheels, not those small wheels normally on econo-priced cars. • Drives and handles like a more expensive car. I've been in a 2002 Lexus and it didn't feel terribly smoother than my little car! • Interior materials seem on par with other cars costing more. Then again, I'm a bit critical of the interior of most cars. I think most cars look cheap inside, especially the dash materials in the last BMW I rode in (a '90s model). • The ride is quieter than the majority of the cars that were available in its class at the time I test drove. • My stereo installer was actually impressed with the size of the rear speakers. Needless to say, I kept the factory speakers. Sounds great with my aftermarket CD/Tape/Stereo unit! • Power door locks, mirrors (heated), windows, etc. VW charges a premium for this, with Hyundai, it's standard! • Adjustable drivers seat that includes lumbar support. Lumbar support is important to those of us with bad backs, and it's a rare find in a car of this price range!

Weakness:

A few initial problems: • Water spots from the dealer's sloppy detailer would not come off after delivery. Brought it back for prep, same problem. Brought it back again and they did an acid wash that removed 95 percent of the spots. • Replaced the front strutt assembly in the first two weeks due to creaking and noise while leaning into turns. The work was covered under warranty. • Replaced the clock that burned out four months after purchase. No problems with the replacement. • The AC should have a level "5" so that it can kick out more air in the summer. • The factory radio is decent but the antenna and RF shielding in the car is not the best. Hence, even though I bought an after-market stereo, I still pick up more static in the FM band than I did in my cheap Geo Metro. • Defrosters are a bit slow to clear the rear windshield compared to other cars I have driven.

My Elantra has very low mileage but I've owned it over a year. Originally, I didn't consider buying this model and knew nothing about it. I had my heart set on a VW Jetta. But the Jetta had only one thing going for it: style. Other than that, it was overpriced and VW America, well, they aren't exactly the kind of folks to deal with if you get a lemon. There were just too many horror stories on the 'net, particularly with regard to the electrical system and transmission. Plus, it was way overpriced considering it has no rear leagroom! The Hyundai Elantra, I later discovered, was actually highly recommended. The folks at Edmunds recommended that it replace one of their previous BMW models as a fleet car! My experience is that the Elantra rides much more smoothly than the Saturn, Mazda and Toyotas I tried. It's more or less comparable in feel of the VW Jetta. I have only one long-term concern with my Elantra. There's a loose sound that comes from the engine on cold start-up and is even more obvious during cool weather. It sounds like gravel tumbling about—as if the car as a "frog in the throat." After speculation about the selenoids and the EGR, it appears the sound is the result of the valve lifters. In my opinion, they shouldn't be so noisy in a car so new. But the dealer says it's normal and that the lifters are working according to factory spec. We started up some of the other cars on the lot and upon accelerating the engine, they all produce the same noise. Still, it irks me to no end. It's not even cold in the Los Angeles area, so how come I never read any complaints about this noise from people in snow country? [Either people consider it normal; they don't hear well enough to hear it; or they don't know enough about cars to realize that they should report it?] Honestly, this issue makes me uncertain about the long-term reliability of this car. If the lifters are poorly designed or defective, the camshaft and engine will eventually fail. Take it from someone who grew up in an automotive family: Valve-train and camshaft problems are not something you can repair cheaply (although any failure at this level would probably result in a recall, as opposed to an out-of-pocket expense). I guess those of us who own 2001/02 Elantras will know within another five to 10 years if this issue pans out. If it does, it could be catastrophic to Hyundai, assuming the cars in my dealer's lot are anything like the ones being sold elsewhere. Okay, so maybe I'm paranoid. Other than that, I really can't complain. There have been no check engine lights, no breakdowns, no problems! The Elantra is larger inside than many compact cars; it's more powerful than some, and it absorbs the bumps on the road much more effectively than the average economy car. In short, I like the handling. The ABS breaks and traction control works great too! The automatic transmission is the only real annoyance. There's nothing wrong with it per se, but it doesn't always shift from 3rd to 4th gear as smoothly as the other gears. This produces a slight flare in the RPMs. But supposedly there is a computer fix for this, so really I shouldn't complain if I haven't asked the dealer to apply it.

WOW. I was looking at a used Honda Civic. After work my wife and I went to see what kind of a deal we could get. After finding the local Honda dealer was closed, we stopped at Van Horn Hyundai, and looked over the cars there. I was enamoured with the looks of the Elantra GTs. I went home and looked up the reviews online. I liked what I saw, so the next day I went back for a test drive. First let me say, I am a road racer.I own a Formula Vee car, so the salesman got a bit more of a ride than he bargained for. The car met my expectations with its excellent handling. It oversteers a bit turning in, but its very predictable, and it esily transitions to a mild oversteer with some power applied. Great brakes! After a few miles, I headed back to the dealer, and sat in the car for a few Zen minutes sort of contemplating its karma. LEATHER!, Great Stereo, Moon Roof, Great handling, 10 YEAR WARRANTEE, and Affordable. Gee, What should I do? Screw the dealer down from the $16,400 sticker, thats what. After a few rounds of sparring, (and a strategecally placed cell phone call to the Honda dealer, asking if the Civic was still availeble)we agreed to a price of $14,089, at which point, I insisted he throw in a cargo net, done. I have had it 2 weeks now, and find any excuse to drive it. Its not quite as much fun driving as the Formula Vee, but it sure is fun to toss around country lanes. Do your research, test drive one, then BUY IT! (Before Hyundai finds out how much underpriced this car is!)

About 3 months after I bought mine I had a problem with the heat, I wouldn't blow out by the windsheild or feet. However it damn near sufficated you through the dash. The dealer was good about this and it was fixed in 1 day. About 5 months after, my husband was washing it and noticed the paint had COMPLETELY peeled away in about 3 spots. We took it back to the dealer again and they said it was from bird poop.(What a jerk) I've had the car almost 2 yrs and they are the only two problems, with the paint being a very serious one. I hope hyundia will do a recall on that issue, but from the looks of it, I'll have to send it to a body shop very soon. Extreme bummer!
