gas mileage - reliability
Weakness:
plastic parts fall apart - hood pully thingy broke the first time I pulled it and the interior door handle broke recently - just came right out of the door. I have been driving the car for almost one year. It has close to 60K miles. I have spent $400 on the brakes including rotors and now have to spend $300 - $400 on a timing belt replacement and $300 - $400 on some emissions thing that only the dealer can fix. At least the check engine light works. Actually, I really like my car, I am just bummed to have to spend all this money on it but hopefully that is all I will have to spend for a very long time. Strength:
strong 140hp engine; great body styling; excellent mpg (i avg 27city/31 hwy); power windows, locks, mirrors are standard; 6 way adjustable seat with adjustable lumbar support; good 14" tires (Hankook); smooth, well placed shifter; easy to read gauges; rotary control knobs are easy to use while driving; comfortable seats, good interior room; nice quality dashboard material; good cargo space, has fold-down seats; good sound system, comes standard with 6"x9"'s in the rear deck; drives smoothly; great visibility front and rearward
Weakness:
cupholder too small; shifter is tough to put in reverse; squeaks and rattles, buzzes are common; strange pattern on seats. tough to find aftermarket wheels that will fit (w/out spacers). small trunk opening. the Elantra's 140 hp engine is outstanding, and mated with the 5 speed is pleasingly quick. i have driven my car for over 31,000 miles now, and the gas mileage is getting even better. the engine is pretty quiet at low speeds, and cruises well at speeds of 75+. lots of passing power on hand, with a sporty feel to the precise steering. brakes work well, they have saved my life more than once. nothing has broken down, except a blown fuse for my blower motor, which was replaced by the 100,000 mile 10yr warranty (comes standard). the warranty is transferrable to later owners and should boost resale value. add the factory spoiler, it is a very interesting style and does a lot for the overall appearance. Similar Products Used: much better value than anything in its class, with more power, more features, and more warranty than the competition. FOR LESS MONEY. you get alot more than you pay for, and that will be obvious after just a few days of driving it. |

Strength:
The best feature for this car is the power. 2.0L 140hp. I've raced a couple of cars with this. I've raced and beaten 3 civics, 2 integras, 1 accord, and 1 golf. I've lost to a prelude though. I like the styling of the front end. The seats are nice and comfortable. All controls are in reach. Good gas mileage. 5-speed shifter is at a comfortable level.
Weakness:
The back end looks kinda weird. The overall shape of the car is bubble-like. I don't like how the cup holder blocks the stereo when cups are placed in it. Moonroof did break down within a couple months of owning it, replaced under warranty and no troubles since. Long-throw shifter is kind of annoying. 5th gear is a real long-throw. Resale value is terrible. Even with the weaknesses for this car, it's really worth the money. It's nice and quick. The integrity of some things in the car are dimishing, but no big problem there, that's normal with all cars. My advice is if you buy this car, keep it maintained, so when you sell it, resale value wont' be that low. Similar Products Used: I've driven at least a dozen different cars, including 91 camaro, 92 camaro, 88 trans-am, 93 grand am, 92 loyale, 92 caravan, 89 firebird, 99 accord, and 92 prelude amongst others. I think that the elantra really holds its own against these cars. |

Quick for an economy car. Got more room than most others. Good gas mileage.
Weakness:
Paint sucks. It falls off constantly. Eats up tires like mad. Paid $650 for the car, in good condition. Its had over $1000 in repairs and needs more. Burns oil a lot. 1.5 Quarts per 1000 miles. In driving this car a little more than a year, I don't think there has ever been a point where it didn't need any repairs. I like to drive it, but its too damn expensive to maintain. Strength:
When I first purchased this car I was planning to use it as basic commute/hang out vehicle. I planed wrong. It has excellent power in the engine (140hp) and power windows, mirrors, and locks. I so far put factory rims which quite the wind noise on the highway and for four speakers it is really a blast. The cruise control is very handy and the fog lights added a nice touch at night. I would recommend a JVC cd changer in the trunk and tint for the windows. I also like the new shape they have given, it adds a nice sport look and by adding a front mask enhances the beauty even more. If you want to check out my car go to www.hyundai-owners.com and check out the Owners Section.
Weakness:
The body is weak!! I think if you press hard enough you can leave a dent. The engiene is noisy buy I noticed putting syntheic oil quiets it. Gas mileage does get bad after some time but adding some fuel treatment will cure that. The suspension is a bit hard in corners but if you have a subwoofer in the trunk the weight should hold it down. The doors need to be better insulated because going at high speeds you can hear alot of wind noise. The paint is week and flimsy. The trunk should have more meat so I added a wing because with the wing it adds a better looking trunk. Finally, the interior needs a facelift, it looks really cheesy. In conclusion, if you dont want to go to the bank and take out everything you have to get that Honda or Toyota then I would go with a Hyundai. They have come a long way and the warranty and the cost is unbeatable. It has a very low maintance fee and for the money Hyundai has placed a car on the road that will keep you driving for years to come. Similar Products Used: It can compare to Kia and Daewoo but they are all Korean anyway so they probably own each other. Hyundai is in a class of its own. |

With routine care, oil change, timing belt change, you can't get a better car for the money. Good gas mileage, came with best brakes ever. I have 90,000 miles and still have original brakes, and I've had them checked several times. They're still in great shape.
Weakness:
Door handle broke. Minor detail, since car was 4 years old when it broke and that's the only complaint I can come up with. Before purchasing my Elantra,I researched cars in similar price range, for safety features, warranty, customer satisfaction, etc. and the Elantra fared very well. I have been very satisfied with this vehicle. I drive 70 miles roundtrip to work every day and I haven't been stranded yet. I dealt with two different dealers on maintenance with this vehicle, one offered superb service, the other was so-so. However, Hyandai has stood by their warranty, can't complain there. Strength:
Price point is excellent for the number of options available. Has standard options that are options on many more expensive models (e.g. six way driver adjustable seat). Good looks! Good road feel and handling for a compact.
Weakness:
Brakes could be better. Had to resurface rotors after 45K miles. Structural integrity is good, but supension system could be enhanced to establish better cornering and ride. Air conditioning unit is too loud when combined with the 1.8 liter 130 hp output in the 1997 model year. Great compact car for the money. Looks sporty and handles better than many comparable models. Improvements can be made with seating comfort (deeper seats for longer drives would be better). Driving position could be awkward for taller drivers. Acceleration is smooth combined with the manual transmission. Similar Products Used: Toyota Tercel (as the closest that I have owned) |
