IN FIVE WEEKS THAT I DROVE MY CAR I TRIED TO FIND SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAT I DID NOT LIKE AND THE ONLY THING I FOUND WAS MY KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE DID NOT HAVE A TRUNK BUTTON! I SWEAR THAT WAS THE ONLY THING! I was involved in a major car accident 5 weeks after purchasing my new Elantra, I cannot say enough wonderful things about how well this car stood up for the type of accident. I was going west on a Farm to Market road new where I live when a Full size GMC Pickup pulled out in front of me. I did not have much breaking time so I believe they estimated that I hit him going close to 50 miles an hour. He was struck in the passenger side, luckily no one was with him. Basically the entire front end of my car slid underneath the bed of his truck. My car was equiped with side airbags but because my accident was a front on collision, they were not needed. My airbag deployed at about the same time as the windshield came towards me and it shielded me from most of the glass, however my left hand was cut pretty bad but that is because it was on the other side of the airbag. I had hit my horn when I saw the truck pull out so my right arm absorbed allot of impact and was thrown back by the airbag which is basically all of my injuries, my stomach turned black from brusing but I am still very grateful I had a seatbelt & airbag to protect me. The engine dropped properly and so I didnot have a motor in my lap. The aironic thing is the fact that the front end of my car was almost "missing" it was so crumpled my from the windshield back everything was intact(all of the doors still opened without problem) I was so impressed with the way my car stood up that I will be buying another one. If you are considering a new car, let me tell you I cannot believe at how wonderful the 2001 Elantra is: The value & warranty are unbeatable and with Hyundai improving on safety features I think they are one of the best cars on the road. If you are interested in seeing pics of my car, please feel free to email me. RESULTS: NICE CAR HOWEVER FOR THE SAME OPTIONS AS MY ELANTRA HAD I WAS LOOKING AT A STICKER PRICE ABOUT 6,000 HIGHER! |

Strength:
Great appearance, comfortable seating, and tight handling.
Weakness:
Small plastic pieces in the interior break easily. Timing belt woes. We bought the car new and it's been a great car. Idle Air Control motor replaced under warrenty at 56,000miles. I replaced the timing belt at about 60,000 miles as per Hyundai service manual, and as an ASE certified Master Technician I can tell you that it is difficult to get correct. Having replaced my timing belt for a second time at 115,000 miles, I highly recommend replacing the belt tensioner with every belt change. Car still gets great milage and uses no oil. Front brakes serviced twice and have yet to replace rear brakes. Manual transmission has very nice feel and is easy to drive. Paint still looks great, and living in an area where salt is used heavily during the winter months, the body suprisingly has no rust. -dents too easily I've had this car for 4 months now and have absolutely loved it. My wife and I had it for 5 days prior to heading on a 3000+ mile road trip to Florida. It ran great the entire trip! The driver seat lumbar support is great on the long trips, but I don't use it for in town driving. i liked how the car looked from the outside. And how it was comfortable to drive even if your short.
Weakness:
Everything possible, Transmission, brakes, tires, power windows, locks.. everything about this car breaks and messes up. I liked the car at first but it was the worst car anyone could ever bye. This car gave me trouble the whole time i owened. I'm finally done useing it. And guess why? B/C i was rear ened a couple of days ago and when i got hit my car fell into Millions of peices. It's a plastic peice of crap. Were lucky we didn't get killed b/c of how crappy this car was. The car is crap thats pretty much all i can say. I had to fix the transmission 3 times. I had to fill it with oil 3 times a month, and i had to fill it with gas constantly. I also had probally with the pwoer windows. locks and had a hard time keeping my hood open b/c the thing to hold the hood up broke off everytime i touched it. All i have to say is anyone who byes a Hyundia. Has to know nothing about a car.. So if your thinbki9ng about getting a car make sure your not stupid like me. Hyudia shouldn't even be in business b/c all there cars are totally crap. BAD CAR!!!!!!!!!!!! Similar Products Used: Toyota camry... Engine is peppy for a four-banger. Again, the styling is very European. I love the front end. Gas milage is good, leg room up front is plentiful (I'm 6'3").
Weakness:
The car has 6600 miles on it and I've had a few problems. Most recently, the CD player refused to accept any CD's. I waited a week for the replacement. The dealer I purchased the car from was purchased by another and closed. The original dealership rocked, but the others I'm forced to go to now really stink. They don't seem to care. At 1500 miles, the brakes pedal got really soft. So much so that my wife refused to drive it. The mechanic said that Hyundai is using a "new design" for the brake pads in the '01 Elantra, and that they "glaze over" easily. They put last year's on as a replacement and everything was fine. That is until about a month ago, when the brake pedal goes nearly to the floor before giving me any stopping power. There seems to be about two inches of "dead" area when I put my foot down on the pedal. It's un-nerving to say the least. When I had it in for the CD player, they claimed to have bled the brakes lines, but to no effect. I am going to say something at the 7500 mi check-up. So, the brakes I'm not happy with. And I do agree with the others that the body dents easily. I've owned my Elantra for six months now and overall, I think it's a good car. The styling is wonderful, and it gets good milage. I think that this Korean automaker is catching up with Toyota, etc. but they'll need to make bigger strides to pass them as far as quality over time. It looks cool.
Weakness:
It totally sucks and so does Colonial Hyundai's Service and the Hyundai Corporation. There has been an ongoing problem with the wheels--something either in the steering or in the wheel axils--when doing highway driving the car feels very unsafe--as if it is going to veer off the road. We have had it in for servicing and they replaced an axil, did an alignment, replaced the tires and balanced them but it hasn't helped the problem. They told me it is at factory specs and that they all handle like that, but I asked them to let me take a 2001 for a test drive with a sales person and then to let him drive it then drive mine to compare them. The 2001 did not handle the same. The salesman was a witness that something is wrong with the car and he told the service center yet they continue to insist it is at factory specs. I took it to another service center and they don't know what to do with the car to fix it. They feel it is a factory defect and can't understand how the car could be at factory specs and yet still handle so poorly. A Hyundai Coroprate Reprensentative was out to test drive my car and said there is nothing wrong with it, that it is at factory specs, yet the salerep from the Colonial dealership that drove it agrees with us that the car is not handling properly. The car feels UNSAFE on highway driving. I'm ready to hire a lemon lawyer and take the story to 20/20. I give the car a ZERO rating. ZERO for handling and zero for service and guarantees. Hyundai DOES NOT stand by it's guarantee. The factory specs are a joke. The problems started immediately. I've lost $8000 on that car already between the down payment and monthly payments, yet the car handles poorly and feels unsafe. Similar Products Used: Ford Contour. Strength:
Acceleration is pretty good, handling is excellent, the engine isn't too loud, the radio sounds great, ice cold AC... I enjoy the power steering a lot. Very roomy (able to fit 4 average sized adults very comfortably... with room to spare!), All of the controls and options are very convenient for the driver to reach, the glovebox is nice and big... the trunk has plenty of room... Last but not least, the headlights are amazing... I used to drive a 95' Camry and there just isn't a comparison.
Weakness:
I really dislike the brakes, they're very spongy. I'm not sure whether or not mine are defected, but my brakes are just terrible... it takes me like 2 hours to come to a complete stop. I just got the car last week so they probably take some getting used to. A side from that small factor... there are NO other weaknesses I can think of. So far so good. I keep my fingers crossed that this thing won't be falling apart anytime soon! I truly enjoy everything about this car... Especially the unbelievable price that I paid, I know that without paying an additional $2000 there's no way I could have found another car that has all of the standard features this one does. Similar Products Used: I was going to buy a Toyota Corolla, however the Corolla just didn't cut it for me, I could barely get myself in there (and I'm a fairly small person), I also test drove a Honda Civic... I don't recommend the Honda Civic at all... the engine is loud, the car doesn't ride smoothly, and there are absolutely NO standard features worth mentioning. In comparison to the Elantra... wait a minute... there is no comparison... I know I made the right decision. |

Good acceleration, great road hugging, good price, comfortable interior.
Weakness:
Every week something else breaks!!! Whether it's the bumper drooping slighty off, or a knob here or there, this car is falling apart! The engine could use a mute button. When I hit pot holes at 55+mph, I pray the car doesn't break. If you're going to buy this car, please don't expect to keep it for more than 6 years. I feel bad for people who have had to drive this for nearly 10 years. This is my mom's car and I was 12 when she bought it, so I didn't know what I was getting into. Although it's a Hyundai I think it runs pretty well. We've had the car for 6 1/2 years, although it only has 54,000 miles. For a car that was so cheap, I can't complain about the acceleration. It's been in 3 accidents (due to my happy-go-lucky cousin) but it still runs decent. I raced my friend's Turbo Supra with 5 people in the car and still hit 100mph (granted I lost the race miserably). All in all, it's a good car and you can't complain if you're not willing to PAY for a better one. Similar Products Used: 1998 Kia Sephia: not much different, they're both cheap cars. |

umm, well... it used to be a nice shade of blue, course now it's more of a grey with all the scratches.
Weakness:
Slow, the handling is terrible, tranny, engine electrical system, that weird goo, the dealership was terrible, the heater, everything but the engine block in this car hasn't had some type of problem. OMG, never buy a 1993 Hyundai. When it was purchased in 1993, it seemed like a god deal, you know, cheap, reasonably nice looking. Wow was that a bad idea. Similar Products Used: None |
