Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Darren Lee wrote about the car wandering all over the road in freezing temperatures. I also live in Edmonton and am experiencing the exact same problem as you. We have the original factory Dunlop SP Sport 5000 195/65R15 tires. I have talked to both Honda dealers back in November and they had not known about the problem. Please contact me and we can discuss this further.

Strength:

Gas milage, 5 speed automatic, good ride for a small car, probably the best car since my 89 civic.

Weakness:

OEM Tires, Factory misaligned rear suspsension that tore rear tires to shreads. Little part number stickers on everything. Dealer repair department is extremely bad. ie: warranty work.

Yikes, Dealer charged me to remove mice stuff from car. Dealer says this is hazardous material. This stuff makes my alergies, etc. real bad. This is a lease car. It seems to me that the mice crawl in and out of car at will. I've got a feeling they come through the air vent door. I have to give this car a zero rating as it can make one sick.

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic EX

Strength:

Engine, transmission, most of the interior

Weakness:

Mileage, suspension, ac, gas cap release

Let me start off by saying that I have been a loyal honda fan for about 20 years. This Civic is my 7th Honda to date and I couldn't be more disappointed. With the exception of the transmission, this car feels more like a Sunfire than a Civic.

Sticker on window: 39mpg HWY, my best: 32mpg HWY (w/ my wife driving)

ac: dead @ ~60kmi

suspension: deteriorating ~40kmi, dangerous by 65kmi. This car used to handle like a slot car when I bought it w/ 9,900mi on it.

body: rust @ many weld seams ~3yrs.

Gas cap release cable: broken @ ~50kmi and then again ~60kmi. Dealer not interested.

Exhaust: Leaking @ 75kmi

Rear defroster: On my 1996 Odyssey (still going strong) you can reheat food on the rear glass if you leave the tailgate up, or melt off 1" of ice at 20below; my civic has trouble clearing a fogged up window.

Tires: OEM's were the lowes rated tires you could find on Tirerack.com. And the people doing the rating - they were right.

What to say??? I feel completely let down by Honda and the dealer. I have driven multiple Hondas to well in excess of 100kmi and expected to do so problem free with this Civic. I could not have been more wrong. Even the service guy at the dealers admits that they're replacing struts on Civics like brakes on Saturns (older ones anyways). A nice $1,200 - 1,500 job at the dealers and $1k aftermarket. And try and find ANYONE who will garantee your handling after working on your suspension.

I'm tapped out. I'll be looking for comments on this one. . .

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic Ex

Strength:

- excellent gas mileage
- nice and roomy/sporty feel
- peppy

Weakness:

- major tire handling problems
- car wanders all over the road and the driver has no control

I purchased a 2006 Honda Civic Ex after having owned a 2004 Honda Civic for 2 years. I had put on over 52,000 km on my '04 and came across the '06, so went ahead and made a deal on it. I purchased it in May '06 and have had the car for just over 7 months.

I now have 20,000 km on my '06 and am seriously reconsidering my purchase. I loved the car from the start but now am finding major problems with the car wandering all over the road.

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and over the past couple of weeks, we received our first major snowfall plus share of cold weather. Temperatures are around -20C with a fair amount of ice and snow on the road. The car came equipped with Goodyear Allegra RSA tires (P205/65 R16).

When I'm driving the car down the road (either at city speeds or highway speeds), the car can wander from side to side at any time. The road can be completely smooth with no ruts or ice on it, and still the car will move on its own from left to right or right to left. It's not a continuous thing, as I can drive for and nothing will happen and then all of a sudden, the car will take off on me.

I'm now looking at getting rid of the goodyear tires and seeing what else I can get for it. I know that the tire pressure is good as I recently took my car in for service and also had the tires rotated at the same time.

I'm curious to know if any other '06 Civic Ex owners are experiencing this same problem. I would be interested in seeing your reviews posted here and what you have done to rectify it.

Strength:

Fun to drive, looks nice.

Weakness:

Doesn't get anywhere near the MPG range they state and advertise.

2007 Civic gets 19 MPG and Honda says that is OK :(

Do NOT believe the MPG estimates. If you are lucky enough to get one that gets the kind of mileage they advertise then you are very lucky. My car gets 19 MPG and Honda says that is just fine with them. They said there is nothing they can or will do about it and it is just bad luck.

If you get the grey interior expect a very dangerous reflection of the entire dashboard on the windshield while you are driving. This is present in all light.

Strength:

Dependability
Looks & Features (EX model is fully loaded)
Gas Mileage
No Worries
Resale value

Weakness:

Ride exhibits some kicks and bumps
Handling is not crisp
Without a stick shift is is a little pokey

I owned a 1994 Accord EX for 11 years (from new) and it was the best car I've ever had. Eventually sold it and bought a civic (for the gas mileage & dependability). I haven't been disappointed. I bought the civic from a private party who had purchased it new and had put 44,000 miles on it. She took good care of the car and had the dealer got through it before I bought it. The first tank of gas, I got 35 MPG. I check the mileage occasionally, but even with 95% city driving (to BART and the store & home), it still gets 31 MPG. I'm sure if I drove it to LA or Tahoe, it would get 36-38. I got an automatic (1st automatic car in 25 years) and it's a bit pokey, but it will easily cruise at 80 if you ask it too. Shifts are excellent. Cruise control switch is inconvenient - placed to the lower left of the steering wheel, as is the sunroof switch. Split fold down rear seat is very convenient. Trunk is good sized. Sunroof has tilt feature. A/C & Heater work well. Steering is good. Handling & brakes are adequate. Stereo is good. The Accord had better stereo, handling, power, steering, brakes and overall comfort, but what the civic offers are all acceptable and the trade off is a smaller car which get better gas mileage (7-11 MPG better) and is easier to park, takes less space in the garage, easier to wash, etc..

Cope it excellent exterior design
Excellent economic designed and perfect gas mileage
Excellent dash board designed
Very comfortable seat for my size
Ease of use and very good safety feature. I love engine oil life indicator feature.
Great suspension
Perfect for city use
Small car but roomy
Play MP3 and audio input (Aux) for iPOD

Weakness:

Cheap and plastic built interior design
No sunglass Holder and no coin pocket
No CD changer and not that good speaker placement.
No tiptronic automatic transmission
Poor adjustable seat

I bought this car new few months ago as additional car. Another two Honda that I have it EX model and I think I just made the right choice to purchasing Civic LX. Some of feature I have compared to Volkswagen Rabbit 2006. I think Rabbit 2006 it very classic interior and exterior design, great feature and very solid built but engine and lease program Honda it the best.

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic EX 4-Door

Strength:

Still using the original brakes, AC system, struts, electrical, etc., etc. 5 speed manual transmission works flawlessly after 125K. Still get 37 mpg on interstate and 30 mpg in town. Not one plastic or trim piece has broken. original paint shines like new (I do wax regularly) even though it spends its life outside. Inexpensive to own and insure. It should easily last another 10 years.

A fantastic car if you don't:

a) want to spend all your time and money getting repairs.
b) want a car that will run forerver with minimal investment.
c) aren't trying to compensate for other inadequacies with your car.
d) want your trips to the gas station to be infrequent and less painful.

Weakness:

Noisy interior, particularly at highway speeds. C & D pillars are wide and create blind spots. Not super peppy, but the 5 speed helps. Some thumb-sized rust beginning to form above right rear wheel well. Poor stock radio.

What's not to like? My 13 year old Civic was bought new in mid-94. I replaced the urethane suspension bushings 2 years ago--mostly because the squeaking was driving me crazy-- and a small part of the starter last year.

-Good stearing
-very compact design, yet spacious inside

Weakness:

-Grinding noise when steering all the way to the left
-Blind spot in rear driver's side

I bought this car brand new. I had no problems the first two years, but now things are starting to show up and I wonder if it's a manufacture problem? The acceleration seems weaker and even weaker with the AC turned on. There's also a squeaky noise every time I have to break fast or turn a corner. Does anyone else with this car have these problems?

Model Reviewed: Civic DX

Strength:

Loaded with well designed features, great handling, good accelaration, supberb ABS breaks. The suspension is firm and sporty without being too rigid and the steering is responsive and solid. 75 000km later and the car has yet to encounter anny mechinal/electrical problems. Depriciation is virtually inexistant. The craftmanship is flawless and the materials are of A-1 quality.

Weakness:

Much more expensive then americans (it would have cost me 12 000$ CDN to buy it, instead of 6900 for my Cavalier) Shifts a litle when negotiating turns at high speed. Performances are less apealing then previous versions. Plain looking. Despite all of these minor flaws, the Civic is in my minds eye the best option when looking at a compact car. Its not min. Defintely worth paying extra for.

We have a winner! Despite the contervsial drop of the hatchback and a more sobber, less sporty look, the 2001-2005 models are a gem. Reliable, loaded with features and great perfomrmances (limited by the fact its an automatic) this car is the ideal buy.
