Strength:

Finally a decent engine for the CV with the optional performance package! Still less power than I would like, but more than fast enough for most folks. Comfort, style, ease of maintenance are good, as expected with a big Ford. Stereo is excellent, awesome with supplemental aftermarket subwoofer. Rear-wheel drive is a requirement for smoothness and longevity.

Weakness:

Paint is the thinest ever. Just brush almost anything against it and you see primer. Brakes suck as on all Ford products. All 4 rotors have warped, these were fixed under warranty. Have had the driver's door lock switch replaced three times and it still doesn't open the doors until you bear down on it real hard, Ford was unable to fix. Cooling fan power wire was crimped at the factory and led to overheating on the George Washington Bridge, $250 tow which Ford picked up. Bought at Quality Ford in Mt. Vernon, NY, the worst dealership ever. Avoid like the plague.

Although I've had a number of problems, I found another dealer that could fix all of them except the door locks. So as the warranty expires, I am happy. This is the only choice in the category (cheap big domestic rear-drive V-8). I'll accept the occasional quality mishap for the luxury of driving around in this generally magnificent vehicle.

I bought this car for $1500.00 around $400.00 less than book value!
I put in new brakes and a new muffler and exhaust. The car has 114,000 miles and it runs great. It is black with a tan leather interior.
Everyone tells me I got really lucky.

Strength:

Safety!!, Ride, Quietness, Performance, 6 seats, Massive Trunk, Good gas mileage for its size, Price, Insurance is cheep, etc...

Weakness:

Massive polar movement. Hard to put the power down off the line, especially in the rain. Needs more power as in the 4.6 DOHC, or the 5.4 SOHC, or best yet the 5.4 DOHC engine used in the Navigator! Stock shocks are to soft and promotes bottoming, dragging, brake dive and float even with the HHP package. Pre 98s are very prone to brake rotor warpage. Pre 98s have sloppy rear end tracking without the Watts Linkage. Pre 98s understeer and oversteer much more. The newer the car the more undersized the electrical wiring. The 98s and newer have had the towing capacity reduced by 3000lbs. This may be the lawyers stepping in with liability issues. Gas mileage drops noticeably with the 3.55 rear end, but the power is way up. Ford moved the license plate so that the vinyl bumper is now venerable when attaching a trailer. The WORST is yet to come. Ford thinks that a console shifter will improve sex appeal for this car. This will drop the seating from 6 to 5 and prevent your girlfriend/wife from sitting beside you. No sex appeal to that! That is a foo foo change. The car will not be even a millisecond faster with a console shifter.

The 98 and newer Crown Victorias (CV) and Grand Marquies(GM) steer, handle, and accelerate much better. Sharp edged bumps are nearly gone. The brakes will no longer warp the rotors. The car is much more neutral handling. She is almost flickable. The polar movement is massive. Never heard of polar movement? Think of a barbell with a 25lb weight on each side and with your hands shoulder length apart, pick the bar up and rotate it while keeping the center of the bar over the same spot. Feel the massive flywheel effect as you try to rotate the bar to your left and right. Now push the two 25lb weights to the middle. Again grip the bar shoulder width apart and pick up the same exact weight. The weights should now be against each other and be between your hands. Rotate the weight to the left and right. Now it is very easy. That is low polar movement. A car that has a very high polar movement resists quick movements. Try this car in a slalom and you will know exactly what I mean.

Power: This is a 4000 lb car. She needs all the help she can get. The 3.55 rear end that comes with the HHP package and the new torque converter make a major impact on acceleration. I could not believe the improvement over my 92 CV. Do expect to lose about 2 mpg with this option. Even with the improvement, everyone still wants an optional stronger engine. Ford makes three that would fit nicely. The 4.6 DOHC with up to 330hp, the 5.4 SOHC with its massive truck torque, and the 5.4 DOHC that is use in the Navigator. The 5.4 DOHC has both torque and HP. Just what the CV & GM needs!

Traction off the line is not the best. The antiquated solid axle tends to spin the right rear wheel just like they did in the early 1900's when it first spun a tire. This is the 2000's. It is time Ford pulled out the independent rear suspension design that it has used for years on the Thunderbirds and MkVIIIs. This may put a dent in Fords very well priced luxury car. It would still be a nice option like with the Mustangs.

The ABS system is top notch. The traction control is not as good as what my 92 had? Strange! Maybe I got a lemon.

The wiring is marginal. Do not expect to run all the windows up and down at the same time and if you do it will be at half speed.

Do not get a full size spare if you are not big, strong and have a good back. It is up high and all the way in the back of that massive trunk. You may not need to be Hulk Hogan to drag it out, but you will be to get it back up there.

The safety record speaks for its self! Thank you Ford.
The side impact pictures I have seen are still scary. The frame has no bracing in the middle to prevent the two sides from being pinched together. The steering column has what appears to be minimal travel when collapsed. Up to 35mph the car has proven to be rock solid. However the design appears questionable on major impacts. Even the rear gas tank is behind the rear axle. It takes nearly a 70 mph rear end to possibly get her to explode so this is very low on the list, but everyone knows to keep it ahead of the axle. The police have this happen about 5 times. Still this is one of the safest cars on the road. I just think it could be even better. I think it is neat that mostly older people with brittle bones drive this car and yet it still racks up fewer injuries than just about any other car on the road! The first place that appears to need improvement is the seats. Police crashes show this as the first weak point. Again, Ford knows better, but the headrest does not lock in place. During a rear end collision, this design tends to collapse the headrest back down increasing the risk of whiplash and neck injury.

Modifications: About the only shocks that anyone has liked over stock are the Bilstein HD shocks. Many Police departments across the country throw the stock shocks in the trashcan and install these. Do expect the ride to be firmer and the handling to be much better. Keep the stock shocks for a great ride. Addco at this time is the only one to offer oversized swaybars. You will not need them with the stock tires. At most you may want to replace the stock swaybar mounts with polyurethane. The stock HHP bars are that good. If you do go with the Addco bars and polyurethane mounts, the ride will be noticeably harsher. As the driver you may like it, but the passengers will not benefit from the increased performance and confidence that these mods provide. Even so she will ride better than most cars on the road. For the fun of it, my wife and I put both of our 99 Grand Marquies in an AutoX race. There were lots of laughs at us before we ran. The laughter stopped after my first run. The car is rock solid up to about 95%. If you push to that last 5% she will fight you some. She shows her very traditional front engine, rear wheel drive, big American car handling traits. You will be pushing and sliding. Counter steering skills are mandatory. The high polar movement insures there will be no sudden surprises. It is expensive and very few people have the technical knowledge to hop up the engine. You can learn a lot from www.crownvic.net .

Young people are learning just how nice these very modestly priced cars are. They are very dependable, fun to drive, and safe at a price that puts the popular vogue cars to shame. Those that think with their brain instead of going with the wind love these cars. If the stereotype of these cars being for old geezers bothers you, you will miss out. I also predict that the future for these cars is moving toward the younger drivers. It is already happening. They are learning what our seniors have always known all along. CVs and GMs are great cars!

Strength:

Size, comfort, reliability and ride. I drive approximately 100 miles per day; primarily interstate roads. The car has over 115,000 miles. The only problem was a shifting problem (that required rebuilding the transmission) that was covered under the warranty.

Weakness:

The car does not have any major weaknesses. Other than the transmission problem, the car has provided excellent service. Gas milage is also very good (almost 26 mpg) considering the size and weight of the vehicle.

I am very pleased with the Crown Victoria and expect to drive for at least another 100,000 miles. I would consider purchasing another one when this one wears out.

The body needs work, the wheel wells on the front fenders are rusted out,

Size,Awesome crash test rating (good for families), Traction control, comfort, styling,Quiet smooth ride

Weakness:

Could use more horsepower for a full size car

The best car I have ever owned! I have a fully loaded one. It has room comfort, speed and reliability. Great trunk space eye pleasingguages, Traction control is great, and a good paint job. If I could change anything I would move the Rear defrost button (mandatory in New York State) right now it hides behind the turn signal and I would add about 35 more horsepower. Other then that I love it but the one highway drawback is everybody thinks your a cop and they slow down to highway speed when you get behind them.
