Strength:

It has nice looks, excellent fuel economy (37mpg in the city with an automatic!), has tons of room for a little car(the front seats are roomier than my mum's Grand Prix and it can haul a lot more in the back), very easy to work on, good acceleration for a 3-cylinder, easy to use dashboard, perfect transmission (even though it's a three-speed it always shifts at the right points and smoothly), has tons of character, and was very cheap!!!

Weakness:

Interior trim is falling apart (dome light doesn't work, door panel popping off, etc.), feels a little cheap and nasty (the vinyl door trim is gross, the bare metal exposed inside the rear pillars is obnoxious, and so on) and not the most comfortable people-hauler.

Overall an excellent car. I bought mine two years ago for $1800 at an auction. Her last owner(s) had abused her and she was not in the greatest state. But she did run me around everyday without complaint but I just didn't have peace of mind in it. But it has been a great experience and it gave me a new view on very small cars. I now respect them because three-cylinders doesn't always have to mean slow and small size doesn't always mean cramped interior. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't hesitate.

Replaced it with a 1995 Ford Aspire because my Metro was starting to show the wear and tear. But I prefer the Metro over the Aspire and I will definently replace the Ford with another Metro when I'm done with it.

good looks, fun to drive, easy to maintain, reminds me of my dad's old VW. good A/C, and comfortable around town. last but not least, GREAT gas mileage, very low priced transportation. SUV owners just don't understand. you can drive smart or you can be fashionable.

Weakness:

automatic is screaming for an overdrive. the controls are hard to find at night.

I can recommend this car for what it is, 4 wheels and a motor. nothing fancy, just a nice little car.

Strength:

Excellent fuel economy!!!! I once got 64 mpg on the highway, loaded! I have the 3 cyl. model, standard, and appreciate the gearing. It has plenty of power in first gear, and stays fairly calm in fifth. It's quiet, easy to park, and easy to get out of someone's way.

Weakness:

Other vehicles don't even pretend you exist. It's about as tall as a tractor trailer tire. I've had to replace the motor (because the previous owner didn't take care of the bearing problem when it loosened up), if I hit a pedestrian or bicycle, the car would be totaled (not quite, but sometimes it feels that way)

I paid $900 for it at first, then needed another $650 to put in a used motor. Now I have $1700 into a car with a motor with <50,000 miles, brand new tires, a decent radio system (now), and unbelievable gas milage. I'd definately reccommend this vehicle to someone who drives a lot and doesn't mind risking their life every time they get behind the wheel. It's a decent ride, and fairly cheap transportation.

Strength:

GREAT gas milage, Very easy to manuver in and out of traffic, fair acceleration with the 5 speed amazing amount of cargo space with the back seat folded down. VERY reliable.

Weakness:

12" rims, cheap plastic interior panels. No tachometer on my 5 speed.

I can fit almst anything into the back of my metro-honestly. For only $7,000 I couldn't asked for anything more plus a 6 year 100,000 mile warranty that I haven't had to use in 9 years or the last 103,000 miles-still going strong by the way. Mechanically the car has been sound, not one problem yet (knock on wood). Very easy to maintain and inexpensive as well. Overall a great car for commuting or a small family

Model Reviewed: LSi Convertible 3 Cylinder

Strength:

I bought this car *RIGHT* before the Gas Crunch hit the midwest. Best idea I ever had. 40+ MPG, 106,000 miles and still running strong. I wouldn't have even considered the Automatic version of this particular year, as I have heard they are unreliable (and make the engine run at 5,500 rpm at highway speeds (65MPH)). The 5 speed is fun to drive, reliable, and a great car to teach people to drive stick with. Since it is a convertible, it wasn't available with air conditioning, but I just put the top down and it fixes everything. If the clutch ever goes out, I think I can just lift the engine out by hand. :) It's also the first fuel injected vehicle I have had in a long time.

Weakness:

Like other Metro owners, I currently don't have an interior dome light. The factory stereo was a little weak for me, but replacing it with an aftermarket Pioneer unit was a snap. (Probably just as easy for someone to steal it, too). The window seal leaks slightly, during a hard rainstorm the passengers get a little wet. It is my first convertible, and I am not too sure how noisy it's supposed to be inside, but it is tolerably noisy.
Also, the Inflatable Restraint light is constantly on, and the (only) V-belt slips on start up for a couple seconds.

For a $1200 Car, it was a very good investment. I was soured about the idea of buying a small car, but the fact that I survived a car accident in the Spectrum made me feel a little better. I think the Drivers Side airbag also gives me a (false?) sense of security. I use the car as a daily driver, and I do quite a bit of highway driving, and I feel relatively safe (the Bright Yellow color is much more visible than some other ones). If I had to do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.

Strength:

Gas mileage is great, parks in tight spaces easily.

Weakness:

I wrecked mine at 30mph hit another car in rear.Did$3,000 damage to my car nothing to the other persons car(ford tempo).Unbelievable prices for parts.I could climb a hill slower if I walked.Slips and slides in the slightest bit of rain-be careful with this car or you'll end up wrecked quickly.Takes forever for air to kick on.Doesn't seem to shift gears on it's own correctly.

7,000 for automatic.Wouldn't tell anyone to buy unless they cannot afford anything better.Good car for someone who has a bit of driving experience on bad roads.Definately wouldn't purchase it for a teen or new driver.

Lack of Power

I paid $6000 for my 1993 Metro in April, 1994 and, except for two front brake rotors and a new side window, I have not put one thin dime into repairs for this car. It is, without question, the most durable and reliable car I have ever driven. And it is economical as well. Before the gas price increases, I could fill the tank for $11.00 and drive for three weeks. If you don't mind a little engine and tire racket, the Metro will serve your needs well.

I strongly recommend this car for anyone who appreciates basic, affordable transportation. It excels in urban driving/errand running situations and can be used for short highway trips.

If you're driving on the highway, watch out for crosswinds and drafts from large trucks. This car is very light and nimble and will move around easily. Drive at all times with your lights on, as operators of larger vehicles may have trouble spotting you.

In the city, you can't beat the Metro. I find the hatchback offers the most utility. I often put two mountain bikes and all their accessories into the hatch and I can still close it easily. You'll also feel good driving past gas stations while you watch SUVs fill up at $1.90 a gallon. Then, at the mall, you'll take that parking space on the end from the same SUV!

As long as you don't expect high levels of refinement and power, you will be very happy with the Metro. Four stars for value, four stars overall.

Strength:

Excellent gas mileage.
Easy to park in tight spots.
Pretty good heater system in -40 winter weather, not too bad in snow as long as it's no more than 6" deep.

Weakness:

The back seat does not flip up like the old festiva's.
Considering what you get thought the price 13,900 canadian was a little high at the time.

Good little car for getting around. Great gas mileage especially now the gas prices are absolutely crazy.
I am averaging 60+ miles per gallon, thats about 22km/litre. and have yet to spend more than $19.00 canadian to fill up.

Previously owned a Ford Festiva for 10 years, it was of similar size but seemed a little bigger in the interior.
Gas mileage was comparable to metro and if ford had still made the festiva's I might have bought another.

Strength:

It has great mileage, It is very maneuverable, very cheap to purchase and maintain, good car for subwoofers

Weakness:

Acceleration, insurance rates in Canada are high if you own one of these.

I paid $10,000 Canadian for it new, and I recommend it to all my friends, even though they do not like the acceleration. If you have a set of subwoofers, try them out in this car, they work pretty good but the entire car rattles with loud enough bass. The battery is good enough for everyone who isn't into loud car stereos, but if you need to put out more than 400 watts, get a better alternator and battery.

If you want a good car that is extremely easy on gas, and you do not care about the acceleration, consider the Metro. Otherwise, you have enough money to continually pump gas through one of the many gas guzzlers out there and you do not need to even see a Chevy Metro
