Strength:

5-speed transmission-shifts so smoothly factory sound system seats are really comfortable

Weakness:

power windows are alittle slow other than that it's great.

I absolutely love this car. It's my first real car and so far so good. I had a 1990 ford escort GT but that car sucked. I had my cavalier for about 2 weeks and the cam sensor went but other than that it's great. The shifting with a 5-speed transmission is excellent. The lady who had it before me had gotten a custom pin stripping done on it so it's truely a one of a kind. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a great 1st car.

Model Reviewed: Base Model Coupe 2.2L OHV (not the Ecotec) and 3-spd auto tranny

Strength:

*Sporty Coupe Styling *Reliable Transportation

Weakness:

*Dismal Sedan Styling *Weak Engine *Poor Handling *Too Expensive (if new) *No decent performance options from factory

Other than the nice coupe styling, there's nothing special about this car. There's nothing bad about it either, except for the lack of horsepower with the 2.2 OHV that ran from '95-'02. I'm sure the 2.2 Ecotec and 2.4L DOHC engines are a little better, but the latter engine sacrifices gas milage and reliability. I hear that the Ecotec has strong internal components. With the 2.2L OHV you get basic reliable transportation with average gas milage. The 3-spd auto tramsmission is the most reliable out of the available 4 (3-spd auto, 4-spd auto, 5-spd Getrag manual, 5-spd Isuzu manual), but is the least efficient when it comes to gas milage. My short trips around town yield around 22 mpg. I've taken advantage of this car's decent aftermarket in an attempt to make the engine more peppy. If you're not interested then skip this paragraph. I've added a high flow intake, exhaust and a carbon fiber extractor hood to put the car on a diet. All of that helps a little, but it's probably not worth the money spent. It would take a $5,000 turbo kit to get a significant boost in power. Even then you risk blowing the engine with it's weak stock internals. If you're looking for a project car for creating a fast and furious 4 banger, stay away from the 2.2 OHV. The newer Ecotec is more mod friendly, but is still costly. I've added nice 16" wheels with wider tires, which is an improvement on handling. On the appearance side of things, I put on clear corner turn signals in the front and added altezza taillights in the back. Appearance is this car's strength and is worth taking advantage of with some nice aftermarket stuff. These things are readily available online. In general the ride is nice, and the handling is ok in normal driving situations. In hard turns the body roll is bad. Tell everybody in the car to hold onto something before making a quick move. The back seats are hard yet tolerable. Our family of 4 traveled from Chicago to Boston and back a couple of times (2,000 miles round trip), and we survived. It wasn't that bad. The stock exhaust (the one with the limp exhaust tip) drones at 75 mph and will put you to sleep. With regular maintenance the car has been fine except for minor problems. My mom also has a 2000 Cavalier, and we have been having similar problems. We both had an o2 sensor go bad, we both had a stress crack in the dash, and we both had the 1 and 2 fan settings stop working because of a blown resistor. We've both had our cars for 3 years. Things like this are fine until the 3 year warranty runs out. I still need to get my fan fixed, and the dealer wants $150. So hopefully these little problems will stop after this. Other than this both cars have been very reliable with nothing major having gone wrong. If you're looking for a new car, the Cavalier may not be the best choice, at least not right now. The car dates back to '95, and GM is releasing an all new Cavalier for '05. The '04s are all dressed up with gimics and the dealers want to sell them to you for $18,000. That's nuts. For $2,000 more you could buy a Toyota Prius (60/50 MPG) or a Dodge Neon SRT-4 (230 HP and limited-slip diff. for '04). If you're looking for a reliable and decent looking used car, consider this one. Check out other cars, but leave this one open as a viable option.

Unfortunately none, unless you call a '99 Chevy Lumina similar. The Lumina rides better, but has poor braking ability.

COST Very dependable (I have 113,000 miles and have not had any problems at all.) Good gas milage Good AC/heat Easy to park and make U-turns

Weakness:

Small back set area Load exhaust Road noise Ruff ride The radio is to close the the gear shifter The AC/heat has a mold smell in the winter Not enough horse power (I have a 2.2 4 cl at 116hp)

This is a great car for someone who wants a dependable car but, doesn't have alot of money to spend.

Strength:

-came with nice rims -auto sun/moon roof actually works -has easy access to trunk from inside car -sounds better when its turned off...

Weakness:

-too much noise from engine -gas gauge not linear with tank which I was told is usual for chevy's...? -has turbo, but doesn't accelerate well...?

Other than all the ticking and rubbing noises my car has had, and the gas gauge/tank problems, and the bad clutch... I'd say overall this car is crap. I bought this car thinking it would be wonderful to have for trips back and forth from NY to OH, but I was wrong. The car isn't capable of being healthy long enough to get there. On top of everything else, the paint is chipping off the spoiler that came with the car...

Strength:

Good mileage. No rust on body so far. Peppy. Good handling on highway or town.

Weakness:

Biggest complaint - ABS brakes. Car shudders when brakes are applied. Dealer says that's the way they are. But my Toyota has ABS brakes and they are great.

Really like the car. Bought it because it could be towed on four wheels behind a motorhome.(4-speed autormatic). Little rough but it's a second car.
