Strength:

Loved the car in every way until it burned my house down.

Weakness:

Burst into flames and burned my house down.

I had a wonderful experience UNTIL the car burst into flames in the driveway of my home and burned my house down. This 2000 Buick LeSabre had 21,000 miles on it and had a completely cold engine (9 hours at rest) when the fire occurred. We believe this to be a product defect and would welcome hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience or knows of one.

Strength:

Nice car and reliable, too.

I think this is the nicest car on the road. I haven't had any trouble with it at all, except for a flat tire, and I don't think that's anybody's fault. I also had to replace the windshield wipers, but that's also no big deal. Mostly, the car has been really nice to drive.

Strength:

Ability to transport 5-6 people comfortably. Large trunk. Good acceleration for a V6. Nice styling for large car.

Weakness:

Extremely soft handling. Disappointing gas mileage- 16 suburbs and 27 highway. Stereo could be better.

I purchased the car with an extended warranty through AAA. It was a good move! During the first 4 years of ownership, I had to replace all 4 of the electric window motors, the alternator, the water pump, the master cylinder, the starter, the rear brake self-adjustor mechanisim, interior "chrome" door trim, etc. These problems were a big suprise to me because my previous Buick gave me no headaches. Over the past 4 years, however, only 1 major problem has occurred. I noticed an oil-like
substance floating on the antifreeze in my radiator (possible head gasket replacement?). I tried some head gasket sealant after flushing the radiator and have had no further problems over the past 6 months.

I previously owned a 1986 Buick LeSabre. The 1992 with only 25 more hp (barely noticeable) gets 2 mpg less in the city and 3-4 less in extended highway driving. Although I like the styling of the 1992, I would rate the 1986 superior in gas mileage and reliability.

Strength:

I like the ride, handling, lots of leg room, head room is good. A lot of trunk room. Road noise very little. Starts well in any sort of weather from 90 above to 40 below zero. Instruments are easy to read, vision is good all around. Acceleration is very, very good. Very happy with gas mileage- 25 MPG just back and forth to work and 30 MPG on longer trips.

Weakness:

none that we have found so far.

Excellent overall. Have had many buicks and this one is the best. Very happy with everything.

Strength:

It drives beautifully, and it is great for long trips. You feel like your in a big lazy boy. Great for carrying 5-6 people and there luggage at one time. Most reliable vehicle I’ve ever driven. The 3.8 L V6 engine says I’ve got power with every rev. Can out run most of the those pimp mobiles. Put there egos where they belong. A car like this can really take a beating. It has been through four different drivers in one family 2 of them being teenagers. Nothing but praise for a car like this.

Weakness:

Well after 260,000 KM isn’t able to hold up to the Canadian winters anymore. The bodies needs it's 2nd paint job done on the body, The seal in the transmission for the overdrive has cracked, (meaning no overdrive). The coils for the suspension makes loud billowing noises, and some of the pwr options are not working anymore. Terrible for driving in snow or slushy conditions. Snow tires are a must with this vehicle. (only applicable to models with buick rims)

In the past 8 years of own this car we have only put about $7,000 worth of repairs, (including gerneral Maintenance)

Strength:

Bullet-proof engine (3.8L) that gets great gas mileage and is very reliable. It gives a smooth ride and is very luxurious. The stereo system is fantastic. Very smart styling (I like this version better than the 90's or the current one). The interior is very roomy and the trunk is very big, but the car's overall size is not too big for city driving - just right.

Weakness:

The alternator has bearings that wear out quickly so be prepared to replace it fairly often. Ours failed only four months after buying it ($230CDN parts and labour), and my father had to replace the alternator on his 88 LeSabre at least 4 times, although his now has 275,000km. The transmission whines a little, like you're driving a car with an aircraft turbine engine, and the fourth gear overdrive kicks in at too low a speed for my liking - probably designed that way for better fuel mileage ratings. The climate control system is nice but a little TOO automatic - with past cars I liked to have hot air on my feet and fresh vent air on my face (Canadian climate, eh) and control the fan precisely, which I can't do with this car. The seats are too soft; my back aches on long trips, and my mother always used a back support cusion with their car. The driver-side power window motor needs replacing, which shouldn't happen after 83,000km. And of course, since it's a luxury car it rides softly but handles like a wet tennis ball.

I can't say enough good things about this car as a used car choice. I've felt for a long time that the car magazines are biased in favour of imports, but this has provided great opportunities for bargains on fantastic, used, domestic cars like mine. We bought our '91 model last year, with 83,000km on it, and paid $5,800CDN. If it performs as well as my father's 88 model it will give us at least 5 years of (relatively) trouble free driving, and it still looks and drives like a brand new car. I can't imagine why anyone would pay $38,000CDN for a new one when you can get one like mine with 70% of its life left at 15% the price of a new one. The key is to find one with low mileage. Sure you have to pay for repairs once in a while but it's always much cheaper than making those huge new car payments, and it frees up your borrowing power for other things like a mortgage. I suppose if you are looking to buy a new one be prepared for some hefty depreciation.

My father had an 88 model and put more than 275,000km on it without too much trouble, which is why I jumped at the chance to buy my 91 model with only 83,000km. He replaced the alternator many times as mentioned above, the wheel bearings, and a few other typical repairs. All in all they were extremely pleased with it.

Strength:

Very strong engine and very easy to maintain. I do most of the minor basic maintenance myself with simple hand tools. Very comfortable and the most beautiful riding car I have owned.

Weakness:

Body has not aged well, the driver seat had to be replaced, but thats more my fault (putting too much weight on it) The stock 14 inch tires are way too small.

This car has been amazingly reliable considering the life its lead. I bought it with 90,000 miles and I am selling it next week with 160,000. This car has been nothing but reliable. It had one minor problem with the coil and plug wires but once those were replaced it ran fine again. I did the repair myself with only a simple tool kit. This is also the best car I've seen in the snow...ever...In 4 years It has yet to get squirrely in the slush, I can't even force it to slide. The 3.8 v-6 is simply the best car engine out there. I don't have enough good things to say about that motor, it is rated at 165 hp but feels like about 210. This would be a great car for a teenager on a budget or someone looking for a winter vehicle. The only real problems are that it looks like an old man's car and it rusts...fast.

Model Reviewed: LeSabre Custom

Strength:

This car has many strengths. It has a great stock radio, very peppy 3.8 litre engine, even though my car is almost 13 years old. No major mechanical problems. Very roomy, and comftorable for 6 people. Great gas mileage (19 MPG City, 28 MPG highway)

Weakness:

The only thing I need to replace on this car after 135,000 miles are the struts, and the alternator. The only major problem that I have had with this car is that it would not start, But that just turned out to be a bad battery. I really don't like the "waffles" on the seats on the 88 custom LeSabre, they are one of the ugliest designs that I have seen. I also wish that the instrument panel had more gauges for that year.

I would really recommend this car to anyone. It has been the most reliable car that I have ever owned. Even though it is an 88 model it doesn't have any body rust at all. Most Buicks are known for not having a problem with rust though. This would make a great car for anyone, unless they don't want a car that is extremely reliable, and pretty peppy for a car that was made for people over 30, not teens. It's just too bad that all cars don't have the quality that the older Buicks had.
