Weakness:

Poor initial mechanical quality.

After many initial (1st year) mechanical problems - all of which were taken care of by tyhe dealer - the car has been running well for the past 2-3 years. Has 39,000 miles now and is running fine.

1999 Volvo S80 - If you are in the mood to spend more at the Volvo dealership that you would for a new car, then buy this car. 39000 miles and I have been stranded due to the throttle body being bad (two weeks after having this fixed ), Both turbo's are being replaced due to oil leking into them. Transmission slipping ( waiting for this to fail ) This car is definately not worth the money, but the worst thing of all is the dealer will always fight you about any warranty work. They will deny everything and make you prove its covered. Selling and never owning a Volvo again.

Everything, especially the sound system, and handling.

Oil changes done properly are hell(turbos)

Wow, I am amazed at what some people have said about the S80! It is simply the best car I have ever owned. I have had it for 1.5 years, the car has 30k miles on it, and has not seen a dealership or repair shop since I took delivery. The way the car drives and handles is simply amazing for such a large vehicle. I don't hesitate to say the S80s suspension grips corners better than my Audi TT roadster. It seems to just glide at 80mph+... the twin turbo 6 never runs out of power and the steering and pedal feel are very solid and responsive. I highly reccomend this car to anyone shopping for a high end performance sedan.

The ionterior is a drean, the sound system really rocks and the body style it awesome.

Weakness:

Where do I start? during the test drive, the check engine light came on. They fixed it 2 days later. After that, it has been in the shop 8 times an average of 4 days each time for suspension problems (rack & pinion, bushing retro-fit, wheel hub, wheel alignment). AM radio reception sucks big time. I should have kept my Honda Accord.

It looks good, but that's about it. This has got to be the worst car that i have ever owned, mechanically.

Safety is a given. Interior ride is smooth and quiet, even with the 17" tires. Great speed off the start BUT especially on the highway -- passing is a dream. I recently rolled down I5 with a S-class Mercedes and Porsche at speeds that were over the limit, ride was smooth and the music was great. All i can say is that if you have a chance to purchase this car, you should -- I highly reccommend it!!!

Weakness:

Old-style light bulbs went out at 10k miles. New ones have/will last longer. I may need brakes at 35K. Turning radius could be tighter, but not a problem.

I really can''t believe some of the reviews that I have read. My Volvo is a dream. Fast accelaration, great steering, comfortable seats and awesome sound system. My previous car was a Audi and I was going to purchase a new A6 Turbo but went with the Volvo instead because of the interior elements.

Nice power, comfortable, good looks, friendly service department(believe me, you''ll get to know them).

Weakness:

Were do I start? Emissions control check light-6 dealer visits, finally fixed with a new mass air sensor. Check engine light, has gone away last couple of months. Knocking of CV joints, only took 3 visits to fix. Bulb failures at the worst times, how come they never go out during the day with daytime running lights? Turbos have problem of deciding weather or not to work while passing cars on two lane roads. Brakes starting to go bad at 30 K. The tire jack has to be the worst design ever made. Car has turned off probably six or seven times while driving, luckily I am still alive. Car "flicks" on and off numerous times on Interstate during rain storms. Speaking of rain, the worse wipers ever used on a car $40+. Transmission has been slipping for a while, and as I write, it is supposedly being fixed.

Best seats in this class. Being 6''6", this is the most confortable I have ever been in a car. You second car will be the dealer courtesy car. Mine is a weird yellow S40.

Strength:

Comfort, driving pleasure, smooth creamy engine, audio quality, safety

Weakness:

the 2 litre turbo is a very little bit under powered

This is the best car I have ever owned. It is luxurious, quiet, and adequetly powered. I purchased the 2 litre Turbo, with 180hp @ 3500rpm. 3500rpm is when the turbo kicks in, and you can DEFINATELY feel the kickback. only problem is, you have to really hit the gas to get 3500rpm. otherwise, the car doesn''t get there, only reaches 3500rpm at about 120kmph. the acceleration is smooth, a little(very little) bit underpowered. however, this is a luxury car, (so power is less of a need), and it feels like one. the interior is modern, but very classy, unlike that of the Mercedes Benz E200, which is full on wood(overdone) or the BMW 5 series, which is all buttons. The Volvo S80 reaches and equilebriam between the two, which makes it a far better choice than either. When you sit in the seats, you think that they are hand made, and wish you had the same for your living room. When you open the door, and enter the cabin, you a sure of the car''s safety, which is a high compliment to the swedish manufacturer know for its safety rather than style. Yet, Volvo has ascended to a new level with the S80, making it a more than formidibal rival to the Merc and BMW, in safety, as well as style. The S80 has a beautiful, unique shape, that is modern, yet, in keeping with Volvo tradition, imposing. Make no mistake, this is a big car.big yes, but not bulky, and definately VERY stylish . driving it is a pleasure, because the driver, as well as the passengers, know that they are in one of the safest cars, and also because they feel the pleasure of being in a Volvo.
