Strength:

The car is so comfortable, I almost fall asleep every time while riding passenger. The car Handles like nothing I've driven before.Braking is Superb.Very stylish.Cant hear the engine running at Idle.

Weakness:

Our moon roof rattled,O2 sensor failed, and headlamp covers had condensation in them. With our warranty,The dealer replaced everything at no charge! with a smile and let us use a loaner. When you buy a european car,Always get the warranty.parts and repairs are pricey. If your too cheap to buy the warranty, Stop whinning and drive a Hyundia

VOLVO has done it again! Man, what a ride.We have the non-turbo model, wich I would suggest. When you Buy a Turbo- look at the mileage and double it,Thats about how many miles are on the engine. The 2.9 has more than enough power and acceleration.Although we bought ours used, It was pre-owned Certified,100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Strength:

Very quiet. Extremely smooth ride. Comfortable seats. Nice appearance. Sound system is above average.

Weakness:

I bought the car in Florida and drove it 1200 miles home. Within the first 200 miles the "Emission service needed" message came on. ($800.00 for an oxygen sensor) I noticed a slight wobble in the front end at about the 1000 mile mark. ($400.00 for upper ball joint) Since coming home, the rubber moulding fell off the passenger entry threshold. Yesterday it started pouring power steering fluid. Volvo dealer says its the rack and pinion steering. Needs replacement. ($3000.00+) All this is in less than 6000 miles. Carfax gave it a clean title, but it is infested with bugs.

If the car was reliabe I would love it! However, it has had so many problems I feel very uncomfortable driving it. I hear a loud sucking noise headed for my wallet every time I get behind the wheel! I have 4 other cars (including a 1972 MG) and any of them is twice as dependable as this car. I purchased it with 58,000 miles. It now has 64,000 miles. For a few dollars more I could have had another BMW 5 series...and should have

Strength:

Smooth ride is tight enough to feel the road and luxuious enough to sit back and relax. Plenty of room and great sound system to get me through chicago's rush hour. Powerful engine that's fun to drive.

Weakness:

Trunk space is a little small for such a large sedan.

I have recently sworn off buying a new car. In the 15 years I have been driving I have had 8 cars so why pay the premium when I can get a used car with plenty of warranty left. I bought the S80 T-6 and so far couldn't be happier, I love the power and occaionally using the manual clutchless shifter. The cabin both front and back are exceptionally comfortable and the sound system is great. I found the ride superior to both the BMW 530 and the lexus GS and light years ahead of the 2003 Acura TL. I haven't owned the car long enough to tell if the mechanical flaws I here about are a problem, but with the $10,000 I saved over a BMW of the same year and quality, I bought a service contract and extended warranty for a few hundred dollars.

Excellent sound system, soft seats, head rests that actually work, good power, good comments, a sleek looker.

Weakness:

Harsh ride, not always reliable, akward rear view especially when parking, lights seem to burn out quickly, cupholders?

Overall this is a great car. I'm 19, and I feel lucky to own this car. Sometimes there is a reliability problem, but honestly what car doens't have this problem at one time or another. I am very pleased with the safety features and the sound system ROCKS!

Strength:

Comfort, economy (D5), torque - D5 torque is the same as a Porche 911 by the way!

Weakness:

Boot lock failed at 12,000 miles. Main beam should be better. Can not select cold face level air and warm feet at the same time, in fact the heating/air-conditioning should be better

One of the most comfortable long distance cars I have driven. As always, the compromise of handling and comfort is a personal preference. On test I tried an S80 with low profile tyres which transforms the car to give impressive cornering power but opted to buy with normal tyres to improve cruising comfort. The compromise suits me perfectly, it will still corner very well on the normal tyres but you do need to watch out for strange behaviour under harsh acceleration whilst cornering. It is probably a function of the traction control but ocasionally you lose all sense of what the front wheels are doing. That aside it reponds very well to being hustled along, it always feels composed over rough surfaces even when cornering or braking. The brakes are the best I have ever used - powerful, progressive and confidence inspiring wet or dry. Overall the S80 is a brilliant car, underated by most people who are blinkered into BMW or Mercedes. I nearly opted for the Merc E class but model for model it was no where near as good as the Volvo - that came as a big surprise! The new Mercedes E class is probably worth looking at though. Mine is a D5 but that certainly should not be confused with slow and noisy. Yes you can sometimes tell it is a diesel but 43mpg average makes up for that at English fuel prices. I certainly never get left behind in traffic and it will show over 130mph on the speedometer without any straining. Legal 100mph cruising in Germany is effortless, relaxed and quiet - and you still get 36mpg at 100mph! Perhaps not a car with the best image but it is one of the best grown-ups' cars on the road.

To many to relist

I Cant wait until August of 2003,this is when my lease is up on the worst car I have ever owned. I have had many problems with my S80 T6 with only 22000 miles of easy driving. The Engine mounts replaced,Front axle replaced,Ball joints replaced 2 times , power steering pump replaced, front light bulbs replaced 4 times, side directional light socket and housing replaced both sides.Front tires wore out . The car feels that it is all over the road at speeds above 70 mph. I also have a Nissian Altima that I paid under 20000 for that has a much better ride then this 40000 piece of garbage. I would never buy a Volvo again.Only 6 months left and counting on the lease.

Mine is balck, wish they had another color available for me at purchase ime.

I purchased my S80 T6 used with 27,000 miles. It has far surpassed my expectations. It is quick enough to easily merge into high speed traffic on short Interstate entrances and smooth enough to have remember to look at the speedometer before the radar finds you. I have the tiptronic transmission. Inside ergonomics are superior, the stereo is amazing. The seats are by far the most comfortable I have ever experienced. I would reccomend this vehicle to anyone.

handling could be improved

It's well known that there have been problems with the first Volvo S80's, particularly those manufactured during the model years 1999 and 2000. Now, however, Volvo seems to have been able to sort out these inconveniences and produce an excellent car. My S80 T6 is a true dream to drive. It's road comfort and handling are superb, the engine very responsive and quiet, the interior well designed and nice to look at. The only problems I had with it after about 22k miles are the following: battery changed after 1.5 years, some noise from the transmission that made me decide to have it towed to my dealership: checked and fixed it under warranty (no major issue, only some rust because it has been standing for a long period of time)

Strength:

Superior acceleration and handling. Exterior finish good and parts fit well and evenly. Interior is stylish and easy to manipulate most accessories. Incredible sound system if you order the top of the line system

Weakness:

Poor left and right rear vision. Double check your blind spots before changing lanes with or without rear headrests up. You need to be a computer programmer to work on this vehicle. Do not attempt more than an oil change yourself and that can even be an experience. The only people who can fox or maintain this car is a Volvo dealer. Within the first 4 months of ownership I had transmission shudder between 2nd to 3rd upshift. Front strut mounts needed replacement. New oxygen sensor. AC decided to not work for a few hours one day. Never diagnosed that one. Check engine light problems. Left dide turn signal light just fell out. Sometimes electrical problems occur such as electric door locks would not work for a few hours or power window would not work for a few hours.

Purchased vehicle 7/10/2002 w/37,000 miles. Had several problems at first but were resolved before the warranty ran out at 50,000 miles. Car is a dream to drive. Handles great, good acceleration, comfortable seats, more than enough interior and trunk room. Large car feel but sports car handling. Handles very well at 125 mph. Good fuel mileage city/hwy at 20 mpg. A joy to drive and look at.

Far too many problems

This Volvo has to be the worst car I have ever had. I am taking it in for warranty work at least every three months. My warranty runs out in about 10k miles and I will be sure to get rid of it before and never to purchase another Volvo again. The problems have ranged from numerous oil leaks, broken strut, broken strut cover, engine mount problems, side running lights that fell out and chirping in the glove box that took the dealer over 1.5 years to finally fix after taking it in 7 times for the same chirp. I have even called Volvo of North America headquarters to express my dissatisfaction. They could have cared less about my concerns and did nothing to address them. I guess they sell enough cars, that customer service is not important to them.
