Volvo S70 Luxury

Volvo S70 Luxury

DESCRIPTION

When 1996 was coming to an end, a new Volvo model was introduced, the Volvo S70.

The Volvo S70 was developed from the successful 850 models, which had been on the market since 1991.

The exterior of the new S70 showed softer styling than its predecessor, but still carryied a strong Volvo identity. Inside the car, the dashboard was new as was most of the interior. In the area of safety a number of improvements were made.

The Volvo S70 was produced until 2000.

Strength:

able to keep repair bills high, accurate fuel gauge useful head lights, nice tires for dry pavement

Weakness:

everything that's not a strength

You might think this review came out of rage, but it was not. I was trying to get those words out of my chest for the last 5 years.

One of the wrost cars ever drove. The performance degrades like there is no tomorrow, even with services on time everytime. No pick-up what so ever. Even with some track testing, cannot exceed more than 135mph (this car doesn't have the speed limiter and is suppose to go ~150mph). Interior noise is unaccptable, little crack here little click there and little clinc somewhere else, the entire car sounds like it is gonna fall apart when driving on not so perfect pavement. The AC broke about 3 times in 2 years, stupid dealer won't warrent the repairs because each visit is right after the warrenty expires. The oxygen sensor broke couple times, the cooling fan broke once. Engine so unsmooth even the steering wheel shakes, engine sounds like a truck especially with the trubo charger screams in the background. Body flex too much, steering is unpricise and slow to quick inputs.
In another words, piece of JUNK, can't sell the car now due to depriciation, besides waiting to save some $$$ and wating for the new M3 to debut.

Family car! With so much repairs and costs, I cannot afford to have a family!

$40K range VOLVO buyers watch out, better look into something else...(AUDI S4, A6 or S6, BMW328, M3 or BMW528, Lincoln LS V8)

Strength:

NONE unless you LIKE the excitement of having your windshield wiper arm fly off while driving down the middle lane of a crowded Texas freeway during a severe thunderstorm.

Weakness:

This is the WORST excuse for an automobile except for maybe the Yugo. Mine has cost me over $5000. in maintainance and repairs in the past two years. The service from the dealer has been very poor but expensive. Parts literally fall off of it on a regular basis. On one occasion the seatbelt buckle failed for no apparent reason and trapped me inside the car. I luckily had a cell phone with me so I called the dealer to have their personnel meet me in their parking to break it off. I was recently rear-ended by a Chrysler minivan going about 30-40 mph. The Volvo's drivers seat back broke and the rear seat back latch failed. The car is probably (HOPEFULLY) a total loss because the passenger compartment was so badly compromised in this relatively minor accident. In my opinion this is a car to avoid at all costs. The S70 appears to be the exact car with a different hood and tail lights. BUYER BEWARE!

This car may ruin your life!

Strength:

S70's rock, powerful (even without the turbo), smooth, comfortable, handles great, stops on a dime

Weakness:

little noisy, with the windows open engine is pretty loud when you wind it up, mine's not a turbo

I flat out LOVE this car. Leasing mine and got a great deal (compared to equivalant models from other manufacturers). Actually, great deal period. I didn't get the turbo, wish I did. I had a turbo loaner while they detailed mine before delivery. The turbo flat out hauls! Even without the turbo, it's a quick car. As someone else mentioned, great on the road. It'll pull from 65mph to 100+ in a snap. Very comfortable at speed. Actually it becomes more comfortable the faster you go.

If you like gadgets, you can get'em with this car. I drive mine hard and still get 23 mpg (I know this from the handy trip computer).

I know the Volvo styling turns some people off, a lot of my friends were included in that group before I got mine. This car converts people.

This is my first Volvo, and won't be my last. Many people have posted reviews about older/different Volvo models. Those reviews don't apply to this car.

Weakness:

Expensive
Boxy looks aren't for everyone
Needs to get over "Your Dad's car image"
Not as tight handling as the Euro competion.

I've had my T5 for about a year now. Very nice car. well made and you can feel the quality. If you don't want to fit in with the every body has one type car (BMW, Benz, Audi) you really owe it to yourself to test drive this car.

Strength:

Very strong engine, very supportive and comfortable seats.

Weakness:

Terrible reliability, interior hardware is flimsy, frequent brake pad replacement, very poor electrical system

This car, with the turbocharged engine, is very powerful with great acceleration and passing ability. The seats are also very comfortable. Unfortunately, the other aspects of this car do not measure up. The car is frequently in need of servicing for a variety of minor but annoying problems that Volvo seems unable to permanently fix. The brake pads wear out in less than 20,000 miles and are very expensive to replace. The exterior and interior hardware is very flimsy and costly to fix. The paint will scratch with the slightest touch. Our lease expires in ten months and we are eagerly awaiting that date.

Strength:

Safe, styling, performance, price, exclusive, exhaust sound, upgraded sound system, steering, seats are best in industry, rock solid at 132 mph,

Weakness:

Ride (Even reducing the air tire pressure wasn't enough to soften the ride) Can be tippy when cornering hard....brake dust builds quickly on front tires...squeaks and rattles....stock 195/60/15 inch tires are too skinny for driving hard....brake squeal when brakes wear down....even non-turbo engine requires 93 octane fuel...

Mine is a loaded version of the base so i have just about everything except for the turbocharger.
I feel that the base engine is underpowered...though i didn't expect much from a 162 Hp but it feels so slow off the line compared to other cars i have driven. It feels like its only making about 130 hp.
Where i live there are very few european imports so i like the feeling of my car being exclusive..i hardly see any other S70's on the road.
Many compliment the car inside and out. THe styling hasn't changed dramatically in the past but the few styling changes they made make the car look that much more attractive.

-I likes volvo cars but i have to say this, the car is not
reliable at all. Tons of problems. I have a T-5 with 5 speed and it is a very early model. I got some electrical problems, the car became a Normal aspirated car once and clutch and gearbox was having problems, the car does not start. In the winter, the windshield water spray was frozen
and the wiper wasnt' working, .... can't mention them all.

Just want to say, avoid T-5 S70 as a used car. i DON'T recommend it to anyone. My 850 turbo was a lot better.
Now we are getting a bimmer very soon.

Strength:

Comfortable seats, smooth quiet ride, very roomy inside as can seat 5 person comfortably

Weakness:

A lot of noises and squeaking going on when going over bumps (ie. sunroof moulding, rattle from dash); rotors warps very quickly (ie. 18000 miles I had to change mine); persistant little electrical problems (ie. engine service light, turn signals (recall on them), bulbs burning frequently (recall)

Feels solid and safe as a Volvo should feel. The 190HP turbo engine gives the extra power needed because of the weight. It's fun to drive and very comfortable inside. No problems on those long distance trips. Overall, a great car with Volvo's safety reputation!

Model Reviewed: S70 TDi SE

Strength:

This car was built to cruise on the motorway. Once you reach 60 mph, you never need to leave 5th gear. Handling is great and the sound system is top notch

Weakness:

The ride is a bit hard but thats the trade off you get for decent handling. There isn't that much room inside the cabin for storing things such as cans of drink, maps etc. Plenty of leg room though.

I bought this car as I wanted something a little bit better than the usual run of the mill Fords I have been running for the last few years. I did have a BMW 325 as a company car for a while but was not impressed. By buying it used, I saved a lot of money yet with only 20000 miles on the clock, it has just run in.
The S70 came with all the toys and is a nice big comfy car that seems to shrink around you once you get it onto the open road. The TDi engine is a bit slow away from the lights but once rolling, leaves most things for dead. It will cruise on the motorway all day without even trying. On top of that, it returns an average of 43mpg which can't be bad for such a big fast car.
The dealer has been great. He should be as I drive about 1000 miles a week so servicing comes round far too soon although the cost of servicing is on a par with the BMW so can't complain too much.
Yes I would buy another one but they don't make them anymore which is a shame. The V70 would just be too OTT as I don't need the space it gives. Besides, the S70 has a more sporty image.
