Volvo S70 Luxury

Volvo S70 Luxury

DESCRIPTION

When 1996 was coming to an end, a new Volvo model was introduced, the Volvo S70.

The Volvo S70 was developed from the successful 850 models, which had been on the market since 1991.

The exterior of the new S70 showed softer styling than its predecessor, but still carryied a strong Volvo identity. Inside the car, the dashboard was new as was most of the interior. In the area of safety a number of improvements were made.

The Volvo S70 was produced until 2000.

Strength:

I like the fact that the lease will end.

Weakness:

Many concerns and breakdowns. The electronics from lightbulbs to computers dont work thus leaving you stranded. Customer service.

The car in and of itself is a disaster. Volvo is not concerned about quality or customer service.

Strength:

Power and pick up

Weakness:

Reliability is extremely low - i had to visit dealer almost every month of my 3 years lease:
1. All 4 door locks were replaced
2. Almost every bulb was replaced, record - 3 times for rear brake lamp
3. In-dash CD-player - was repaired 4 times!
4. Problem with ignition - 1 time
5. ABC module was replaced
6. Multiple squeaks and rattles
7. Battery is dead after 2.5 years of service
8. Front door bass speaker was replaced
9. Fuel door lock was repaired 3 times!
10. Engine is very noisy
11. Suspension doesn't soak even minor bumps
12. Steel on the doors is so thin that even a light touch causes a ding
13. Sunroof was repaired 1 time; it also causes a lot of squeaks

Thanks god, it's over - I just have returned the car after lease.

I've leased it, monthly paiment was about $440.
I got some excitment from this car - first 6 monthes. After that - I've to see my dealer more often than my girlfriend.

Cannot recommend it - totally unreliable and feels outdated. Good bye, VOLVO! Forever.

Strength:

Amazing acceleration, comfortable seats, excellent climate control system, powerful stereo system

Weakness:

Lots of squeaks and rattles, certainly NOT maintainence free, some turbo lag, stiff suspension takes bumps incredibly hard at times,

Overall, I would reccomend this car, but I have had some trouble with it. There is an oil leak around the transmission now and the car only has 65,000 miles on it. Not under warranty anymore. $650 to fix it. Love the crisp stereo system with excellent bass and growl of the car's Inline-5 Turbo. Bought an automatic in our S70, but next time I'd go with a standard, especially with a car that has this much power (236 hp).

Luxury, big interior, safety, confortable seats, powerfull...and many other things,8 speakes...

Weakness:

just say that the audio receiver is too expensive (about 1000$ a radio cd/casette receiver is too much!!!)

It´s a real good car, on the other hand, even the s70 has a very good speakers installation, the audio receiver isn´t good enought for the price.

Strength:

Good looks both out side and inside. Very nice entertainment system and other standard features. Handles well on the high-way, but the ride is a little bumpy. Positive steering and good brakes are a plus.

Weakness:

Rides like a stage coach. The suspension is very stiff and does not go over bumps very well. Five cylinder engine sounds and feels more like a four cylinder engine.

Not worth the $29,540 I paid for it. I would not recommend the Volvo S70 SE to anyone I care about.

Strength:

Cargo capacity - able to pack in 4 adults, golf clubs and luggage.
Gear ratio and acceleration points through downshifts.
Performance in the ice and snow (with the right tires - I replaced the original Continentals with Michelin XOnes)
Interior controls layout very logical.

Weakness:

Original Continental tires - cornering squeal and poor winter weather handling.
Too many warranty repairs (heat seater, seat belt, speaker grill, door lock, dash light, passenger light, power windows, transmission, and others)
Wind noise at highway speed.
Dealer capabilities (There has never been just a single trip to the dealer for either regular maintenance or warranty repairs)
Annoying customer satisfaction surveys that are preceeded by calls from the dealer encouraging high responses.
Sqeaks and rattles from sunroof and dash.

Paid 48K+
This is my 4th Volvo which shows my loyalty to the brand over the years. It seams as though the reliability of the cars manufactured has been declining and I will be unloading the car soon (before the warranty expires to maximize resale value) and will be moving into a BMW or Mercedes.

Strength:

Excellent kick, took off like a rocket, good handling, very comfortable to drive, excellent climate control, safe (I was rear ended twice when I owned this car). I traded it in recently after a serious rear end collision.

Weakness:

Beware of VCNA (Volvo Cars of North America) when you need parts. I was seriously rear ended a few months ago, with extensive rear damage, and VCNA held up the repair of the car for several weeks because a part was on back order...for more than 6 months, and wasn't open about this to my dealer for more than a month. A reconditioned part had to be substituted. This was the second time we experienced VCNA not having a part available for more than 6 weeks. VCAN customer service is also useless--if you call them, you'll get the "we'll look into it and call you back" song and dance, and you'll never get follow-up--they consider contacting your dealer enough effort. My car was very reliable up until the accident--from what I have read, the newer ones, 99 and forward don't come close to the reliability level my 850 had.

I cannot recommend Volvos anymore because of the lack of company service and support for the vehicles and the delay in obtaining proper parts from the parent company

Picks up alot of road noise, otherwise very quiet.

Just bought the car, but I love it! Dependability? Well I don't know yet, but other's I know have the 850 and no problemos. I really like driving the car, I am used to a Land Rover Discovery, so getting into a Sedan is a real bonus. The interior is great and very roomy. Did I say great acceleration? Awesome.

Solid, reliable, safe. Accesories. Westport dealer is excellent for service. FM reception. Heat available soon after startup on cold mornings.

Weakness:

Number of squeeks, rattles and wind noise.

Dealer service dept took genuine interest in eliminating the offensive noises. Car handled 55 mph deer strike very well and is back to like new after $3500 repairs.

Nl aspirated 5 cyl engine good enough for us. Miss leather seats (base model). Will keep V70 for 150k+ miles. Looking now at S40 sedan to replace aging Saab 9000 (nearly 150k on odometer).

Strength:

Predictable handling, good road feel

Weakness:

Squeaks and rattles, more warranty repair than I would like

Although my prior 240 was a maintenance nightmare, I decided to go again with the S70 on the basis of Volvo's legendary safety and the fact that, at the time, it was the only car with side air bags that was in my price range.

Strengths:
As noted above, I have enjoyed driving the S70 greatly: it obviously accelerates much better than the 240, and has rock-solid road manners. It is not a sports car, but it handles and accelerates very well while keeping its passengers very comfortable. Highway stability is wonderful. Once the engine broke in, the cabin noise level dropped considerably as well.
The car is also very functional. It has great passenger and cargo space: we transported our dining room table through the rear split seats!
Personally, I also like the styling.

Weaknesses:
My early impression is that the fit and finish is not up to par. The adhesives used in the doors, while probably environmentally friendly, were weak and caused the vinyl to bubble in the hot California sun. My dealer assured me that multiple customers have come in with the same complaint. Thank God that problem was fixed under warranty. A couple of squeaks and rattles have also emerged from the doors and the ceiling.
No mechanical problems so far, however (*knock on wood*).

Overall, an excellent car and a vast improvement over the 240. A pleasure to drive and own. One of the safest cars out there.
Long-term durability is probably better than that of the 240, but still not be up to Mercedes, BMW, or Lexus.

Peace,
WTC.
