Strength:
See above.
Weakness:
Several for a car that cost this much money. See above. The seats and steering are cheap; the car has already been through a turbo (14,000 miles) which I found unbelievable. Carpets are thin. Handles well and a good car to take on a trip. Storage is adequate and I like the cupholders. On the downside, the list is long. The car is "tinny" and does not feel as solid on the road as it did during the testdrive. There have been many mechanical issues and several parts have been on backorder. Why pay for a 9-5 if it is in the shop all the time and they give you a lesser 9-3 as a loaner? I thought Saab made better products. I will never lease or buy another one. 9-5 Aero Wagon (manual)
Strength:
Excellent quality (zero problems in almost 2 years - never been to the dealier except for scheduled maintenance) Strong engine, very comfortable, superb highway cruiser, good gas mileage, great stereo, nice size
Weakness:
Engine power & torque do not come on as smoothly as a normally aspirated 6 cylinder. Car feels underpowered initially and then comes on abruptly at 2000 rpm. Torque steer noticeable, but easily controlled. Gearbox pretty bad. It does not shift smoothly and quickly. Sticks in neutral & feels like it is being forced into gear on 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts. 3-4 is fine. Hard to keep up with the automatics out of stoplights. 2nd gear too high to lug around right angle corners around town. If this is typical, Saab shouldn't offer the option. Probably will turn car in at lease end for this reason. Dealer service department poor. Not responsive to this issue and rarely answers the phone, even to make an appointment! Why isn't a shop manual available at a reasonable price? Larger ouside mirrors to reduce blind spots. A good car, almost a great one. Attractive appearence & useful size. Great on the open road. Less satisfying to drive around town. Aero engine may be too much of a good thing. Not smooth enough to be a real BMW competitor. Really could use 4 wheel drive to balance the chassis with all that power. Gearbox not up to par. Saab 9-5
Strength:
For $30,600 (I thought I was getting a great deal...boy am I wrong), it is a smooth driver, looks good, and smells good.
Weakness:
Cheap leather seats (way too soft, wear too easily). Bad parts (ICU, Direct Ignition, and recently the turbo) Steering Wheel vibrates too much. Loss of faith in car and brand. I bought this car because it was different. Boy, have I been learning the hard way how being different can really COST you in time and patience. While the car is a comfortable car, with the exception of the HORRIBLE LEATHER SEATS (they are wearing like a cheap piece of furniture), I have been stranded twice and have had the car back at the dealer three times in the past two months. Failed ICU, Direct Ignition problems, and recently "Blue Smoke" (bad turbo). The car is comfortable to drive but it has proven thus far to be about as reliable as a Yugo. Unless you want to be really quirky (it's a GM, afterall, so it's not too far out of the ordinary) look elsewhere. I'm being serious and honest; I would feel less threatened by another breakdown if I took my ten year old Ford on a road trip. Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan
Strength:
The engine is superb - I only wish it were putting its power down via four wheels. Safety and comfort. My kids are large and teenage and they still fit in the back without complaint! Handling is good for such a large (by Euro standards) sedan. In my experience, excellent customer service.
Weakness:
SID (info) display broke at 2 years 4 months - replaced under warranty (standard 3 years / 60,000 miles in the UK). Brake dust is, as other reviewers have pointed out, a real pain (on the front wheels especially). Fiddly intermittant windshield wipe control - not very clever when you consider the easy-to-use devices that were available on Ford Granadas (Scorpios?) 15 years ago. I have detected a slight 'knock' that I feel through the steering wheel when accelerating after braking. Although it is subtle, it is most noticeable when turning left under power, having used engine braking to slow down (it's a manual shift). If anyone else has experienced this or knows what is causing it, please send me an e-mail! I am unable to convince the Saab people that there is anything wrong. An opinion from the other side of the Atlantic for the amusement of you Yankees. I've owned the car from new and run it for 2.5 years. In that time, it has never let me down. It has been serviced by a Saab main dealer at the required intervals and the services have, by and large, cost pretty much what I had been expecting according the Saab servicing 'menu'. On reading all other reviews (90 at the time of writing) in the 9-5 section, it appears to me that there is a bimodal distribution of opinion: those poor folk who bought a 1999 model, who have suffered dreadful reliability problems, and those of us who bought 2000 or subsequent models, who appear to be delighted. There were a few exceptions in both camps, I should add. Similar Products Used: Saab 9000 (owned 4 years from new, no problems at all. Sold it and bought 9-5 Aero). Strength:
I'm so dissapointed with the car that I can't say anything good to said about the car.
Weakness:
Zero reliability Plain and simple stay away from this car. I've spent over $4,000 in repairs in the last two years. Just to give you an idea of the unreliability of this car, it has been in the shop for repairs 6 times on the last 3 months. The check engine light will stay on no matter what you do to the car. In addition, of its unreliability, Saab customer service will not help you or listen to you. I can wait to paid off this car up and get rid of it. I can't trade in because his resale value is too low. Once again, do not buy a Saab! Similar Products Used: Saab 95 1999 |

Saab 9-5
Strength:
great seats, unique styling, peppy turbo engine, radio controls on steering wheel, very smooth ride.
Weakness:
poor reliablity, noisey engine, road noise I have mixed feelings of love and hate for this car. I bought this car thinking I would drive it at for at least ten years. It was really a wonderful car in many ways, and it fit my body and personality like no other car before it. I finally had to get rid of the car because of the HUGE reliability problems incurred between 20k and 77K miles. The engine computer died at 20k,leaving my wife and I stranded at a party. At 50k the direct ignition module caught on fire, leaving me stranded at my office. The SID module was replaced 3 times. The climate control module had to be replaced. After the warranty expired things really went down hill. I had two head gasket replacements within two months. A wheel bearing went out. The throttle body sensors failed. Problems with the heating/cooling system: expensive hose assemblies failed. The last straw was the failure of the master brake booster. Total repair costs after warranty was close to $4,000! There was a major repair bill every month during the last six months I owned the car! I finally traded it in on a 2003 Lexus ES 300, a much more refined car, because I knew I would have a hard time selling such an unreliable car on my own. Despite my bad experience with Saab, I would still consider leasing (not buying) another Saab, but only the new 9-3. I would avoid the 9-5. The Lexus is much more refined, extremely quiet and presumably more reliable, but I miss the Saab's personality, driving experience and unique features. I guess you can't have it all. /9-5 Wagon - Gary Fisher Ed.
Strength:
Attractive, distinctive styling, great value, good economy combined with power and manual 5-speed (in a wagon!! - not gonna see THAT in any american made "fambly hauler")!! No need for 4x or All Wheel drive when you have Traction Controland Snow Tires in Winter. Add a roof rack to the bars and this wagon's room, power and flexibility shines!
Weakness:
We're tall - so rear leg room could always be a little longer. Second accessible cup holder in front would be nice. Odd size tires/rims - difficult and expensive to replace. We absolutely LOVE this wagon! "Quirky" = different, 3rd SAAB we've owned, but this one's the best yet. 30k Miles - drive three time across country last year as we moved back to Colorado from Virigina/DC. Had to replace engine's torque control module gopinf cross-country - Indianapolis SAAB repaired/replaced (inlcuding wash and vacuum) in only 1 1/2 hours under warantee!! Otherwise only bulbs/oil changes. Appreciate the included maintenance and loaner cars from SAAB dealers everywhere! Great power from 4 cyl (manual tranny) - even the Rockies love this wagon! Bottom Line - FUN FUN FUN + Flexibility and it comes with Bun Warmers! Strength:
This car has Utility, the rear seats fold down completely flat with enough room from the trunk to the front seats for my 88 key digital piano{in a flight case}and other equipment I need to transport for my music jobs{aka gigs} The ride and comfort is the best of both worlds. I feel completely safe in this car on winding roads wet or dry. It's the only sedan that feels and handels like a two door sports car that I've experienced. Yes,the infamous cup holder is a conservation piece, but this too has utility.Excelleration when needed on the highway is very appreciated. One has to experience turbo to understand what I mean. At this point in time I would plan on buying a 2004 when they arrive.
Weakness:
After four months I needed to replace the ignition cassette.{58K} It stalled on the way to work. Warranty covered the $800 part and I recieved a loaner Saab from the dealership. The service tech @Saab told me this happens even on brand new Saabs at times, though not a common occurence. The service tech said he's seen Saabs w/200k miles that have never needed an ignition cassette.{The ignition cassette works with the onboard computer,so it's a little pricey piece of software if it comes out of pocket. Found this beautiful Saab 9-5 from someone I know. All records kept and a transferable warranty too. This Saab came with 56k miles.I purchased it in june of 2002.This is the SE package{fully loaded} B&B Saab of Santa Clara preformed a diagnostic check on the car for me before I bought it. This Saab recieved a clean bill of health. They had copies of all records too, because the party I bought the car from had their work done at this dealership. /95 Aero Wagon
Strength:
The way it looks and drives. The sensible design and layout of the interior. The sound system is great. The seats are very comfortable and the heaters in them are fab. The direct spray on the head light washers is an improvement over the mini wipers on the 1999. The wipers just smeared the dirt around. The engine rips and the tires grip.
Weakness:
Brake dust is a drag and the blind spots that result when the rear head rests are up. Who needs an air conditioned glove compartment? Engine exhaust has a stronger smell than the 1999, not in the car but outside. This is the second 95 I have owned. The first was a 1999. I had very few problems with the first which is what prompted me to get the second. Maybe I was lucky....maybe not. The car handles well and has plenty of room for stuff; kids, dogs, tools, bikes, skis, etc. The engine has plenty of power and really goes. Similar Products Used: Volvo XC, Passat wagon |
