I love the styling its a 95 but manages to look great or better around new cars. Look at other 95 models and you will see what I mean! Nice interior, feel like I'm in a plane. Good power, engine sounds great goes fast too 140+ got it to 135 but chickened out( the whole time car ran flawless) overall it seems like one of those cars that GM but some love into. Goodbye OLDS we'll miss ya!
Weakness:
Terrible resale value, expensive oil changes,Elec. system can have problems, Premium gas guzzler. Wow, cant believe all of the problems these people have experienced. I have had none of them, knock on wood! Im not sure if its because mine is an autobahn or I just got lucky. I know the electrical sys. has problems- all GM cars do, it just depends on that particular car- My heated seat went out on the drivers side last year, so did my dads 2001 Tahoe. My traction control has a short- my friends 1998 riviera has the same thing, see the trend! I think this is a very well built car and Im happy with it. There are a few things people don't seem to know about them the main one being OIL!!! No matter what the book says it takes -8- quarts, the dipstick sucks so dont reley on it. Alot of people have engine problems and at least half always seem to to use 6/7 quarts. I dont know if that could be a factor. I just saw a 95 with 226,000 miles and it still ran strong. Have to be a millionare to own. Manufacture defective design that has alternator damage all computers including ABS (brake control)-GM will not admit there is a problem. I am not aware of any technical advisories to dealers to help solve. You will frequently have to spend consideral funds to keep this car running. I recommend anyone else having similar problems to file complaint with the federal goverment and The center for Auto Safety-these problems could lead to a serious accident. Click here: ODI - Office of Defects Investigation The history includes records from date sold new. I purchased at end of my business associates lease: 12,808 miles (2-29-96) seal, lower crankcase replaced. 34,603 miles (11-25-97) diagnose electrical problems-replace radio. 44,513 miles (8-19-98) diagnose electrical problems, replace alternator controller, PCM/VCM (computers) 49,098 miles (12-30-98) diagnose electrical problems, again replace alternator (alternator is causing computers to fail) 63,420 miles (3-1-2000)- I purchase at end of associates lease and he leased new Aurora-dealer never advise him the electrical problems would be reoccurring. Dealer performed major 60,000 service and indicated the care was fine. 65,777 miles (7-9-2001) The car backfired while wife was crossing busy intersection and was not very responsive (it also started missing). I was just able to get to local garage next to intersection to try to at least get repair it enough to drive. I had no idea it would require major repair since it had only been 2,357 since it had a complete major 60,000-mile dealer service. The repairs ($2,480) included the ignition module, ECM (computer), Electrical brake control module (ABS system), and alternator. The diagnostic showed the alternator malfunction was damaging the above components. This is the third alternator in 21,264 miles (and second EMC ). There is a manufacture design problem and the manufacture appears not to be able to fix it. 70.090 miles (5-28-2003) The car was taken in to the dealer because it slams into gear when shifting from park to reverse and shifts rough during normal driving. I was advised that the ECM (computer) was causing the problem and would have to be again replaced. After getting the complete car history, I found that it has been an on going electrical problems that GM has not solved. The current dealer was just going to replace the computer until I advised him he needs to check alternator since it appears from past experience it is involved in taking out the computers. The only way to get GM to own up to their error and develop a fix is a forced recall. Please get a print out of your car's history from a GM dealer and review for repairs under warrantee and after. Look to see if you have had similar problems that are also reoccurring. If so please email me "donnapaca@aol.com" Also file report to federal gov and Center for Auto Safety (they could consider filing class action if they get enough complaints and are deemed safety issue) as these defectscould cause serious auto accidents. Great running motor, good seats, plenty of leg room front and back, oil filter in a convenient location for oil changes
Weakness:
Costly maintainance, poor handling suspension, 1 ton truck turning radius, poor power steering, poor head room, Costly maintainance This is an arguably attractive car with good power in the higher RPM's. The seats are comfortable but won't accomodate taller driver as the headroom is limited. I have to have the seats set just right and I'm only 5-10. The HVAC controls require you take your eye's off the road for too long. It's handling is slow and there is way too much lean in the corners as the suspension is tuned to soak up the bumps. Maintanance is where this car falls short, especially with the '95. Many of the problems were fixed over the next few years but as I've heard they didn't eleiminate them. This car seems to love being in the shop and the repair bills aren't cheap. We have had the brakes completely replaced, power steering pump rebuilt, and the car currently needs some suspension work and there is a major water leak. EVERY time it rains we have to vacuum a gallon of water out of the back seat floor and underneath the back seat where the battery sits. Cuased a short the last time. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CAR AND CAN JUST BARELY AFFORD AN AURORA, DON'T GET IT BECAUSE THE REPAIR BILLS WILL BREAK YOU. I will stick to driving my pickup, 93 Ranger, as the only thing that has had to be done is some minor brake work, @100k Similar Products Used: mostly trucks and SUV's and will keep it that way, also have driven 93 intreped (door never hung right), 96 tauras, great car despite the weak engine (no maintainance needed) 98 grand prix, (no main |

Power, looks, trouble free, wonderful interior, powerful engine and smooth tranny, easily the best car I have ever owned. I disagree about maintenence costs with other reviewers. They are actually very low. I had Mitsubishi's Diamontes and other products for 20 yrs and at 15,30,45,60 thousand miles it cost an arm and leg. At 60,000 having to change the rubber timing belt plus other maintence ran me $1,200 bucks. Metal timing belt in OLds and no major maintence until 100k.
Weakness:
None. I do agree the cup holder is in ackward place but it is a minor inconvenience since I don't allow eating in the car. I'm 6'2" so the 97 Olds with sunroof was a problem as my head was close to the headliner so special ordered my 99 without sunroof from factory. Absolutely LOVE this car. Have had the car for four years of wonderful trouble free service. Change oil every 3,000 miles. 0 problems from the day I bought the car. Love the diamond white color with beige interior. Ordered the car from the factory without the sun roof but all other options including the Autobahn package, the Bose sound and 12 disk trunk system. Car performs absolutely flawlessly on the road. Lots of 70 plus freeways in Ca, but you need to drive closer to 80 to avoid getting run down. Even at that speed on the road gets close to 26 miles per gallon. 21 around town. Love the Northstar engine and drivetrain. No rattles or interior noises and I am a real fanatic about extranious noises. Bought the 99 because I had seen the upcoming 2000 styling in Motor Trend and did not care for it. My previous car had been a 97 Aurora also white diamond metallic. It had close to 50,000 trouble free miles on it as well. Wanted the classic original styling so bought the 99 at least 2 years earlier than I would normally have done. I have not been sorry for a moment that I did so. My dealer here in Fillmore is Wm L. Morris and they have been great to do business with. I've always loved big cars. I've owned a Lincoln, a Caddy, and two Buicks. This car is easily the most luxurious and powerful of all. The combination CD/cassette player is something I'd always wanted and the sound system is to die for. At night, I feel like in the cockpit of a 747 - very impressive lighting. The car gets as good mileage as my previous LeSabre did and has 40 more horsepower. I've had her up to 100mph several times and the car is rock steady. My LeSabre got 'squirrely' at 85. The road noise is a tiny bit more than I expected, but it's still a very quiet car. Shifting is silky smooth and consistent. Seats are very comfortable with 6-way power and 2 lumbar adjustments.
Weakness:
For 8 months, I enjoyed hassle free driving. Then it started. One afternoon, for no reason at all, she stalled at a light. Re-start was instant and no further problems...until about a month later when she died again. Restarted instantly. Over the next 3 months, the stalling became more frequent until I finally had to put the car in neutral and keep the rpm's at 1000 or above at every light. My regular shop wouldn't touch it. But they did put new plugs and wires in for $550! Took it to the Olds dealer and they couldn't find the problem. Took it to a Pontiac dealer that said I had a bad neutral switch but couldn't find anything on the computer that would show a stalling problem. They changed the switch and cleaned the throttle body and that stopped the stalling. Now the gas guage is acting up. On a full tank, the guage needle bounces from "E" to "F" every 5 seconds and causes the "low fuel" to chime. This happens until I burn off about 8 gallons, then it stops. The trunk opening is awful. And both of the trunk lid strut support mounts have broken at the base. I've managed to fix this with some bolts and scrap metal, but it's a very poor design from GM. I was on my way to look at Lexus 300's and decided to have a look at an Aurora that had been advertised at this dealership. I had read some very positive reviews at Car Talk about this model. On the lot, it didn't look that impressive on the outside, but when I opened the door and saw the interior, I 'melted'. It was immaculate and my favorite - grey leather! I was prepared to pay up to $18K for a used Lexus 300, and the price tag on the Aurora was $6k less. Test drove it and bought it that day. Refused the offered warranties - don't believe in them. Later I wished I hadn't. Similar Products Used: Cadilac DeVille, Buick Park Avenue, Buick LeSabre. |

Cup holder. Last summer, my wife purchased a 1999 Aurora. This car has been absolutely fantastic! It is truly a unique automobile. The styling is unmatched and the motor is so smooth!! I loved hers so much, last week I went out and purchased a l998 Aurora!! We are now a two Aurora family...hers is white and mine is maroon. Just a lovely car...hope I have the same luck with my '98 she's had with her '99!!! |
