Strength:

Interior is superb, nice touches, leather and real wood. The engine is silky smooth, transmission is perfect as GM is known for their great 4T80 trannys...which the 4.0 model gets. The 3.5 V6 model gets a 4T65 tranny, still good though but not as robust.
Value is great - can't get another car this good at this price with a V8. The Lincoln LS cannot hold a candle here, and I know thats a nice car, too.

Weakness:

GM needs to put its foot up these dealer's rear ends - enough said.
That GM is killing Olds is a sin because they have the best lineup of cars of any GM division.

I really like my 2001 Aurora 4.0, the V8 model. While the V6 (Aurora 3.5)is an excellent car, the v8 is more suitable for this type of a luxury car. Do not get me wrong, the V6 bumps up the value for the dollar up even more than it already is with the V8. Keep in mind that the V8 also gives you much nicer looking 17" wheels (instead of 16") and Precision Stability control, and other nice things standard. You can get SOME of these feature as options on the V6, but not all and when you add them you are pretty darn close to the V8 anyway...
This car now has 12,000 miles - trouble free and squeak/rattle free. Who says that the US cannot build a great car is still brainwashed from the troublesome 80's. I, for one, replaced a Toyota Camry XLE for this car and the difference is just too much to describe.

I also own a Buick Regal GS with the supercharged engine. This Aurora more than hangs with it - it passes it.

Everything

Awful, for the past few months, I've had many problems with this car. I recently got new tires, which cost a pretty penny - and, not 4,000 miles later, I had to buy new ones. The alignment was off, the brakes squeaked, and no one could fix the problem. As if it couldn't get worse, my wife was driving my car last weekend, and was in an awful car accident. Luckily, she was not hurt, but I'm interested in finding more information about this car. I've read your reviews, and a lot of you believe that it is a lemon. E-mail me with any information at neenabu@aol.com. Thank you.

Strength:

Power, styling, comfort, ride & handling, creature comforts.

Weakness:

Wish it had Onstar - - which I will have when I get the new one!

Terrific car. No problems. I can't wait to get the new 2001 model, it is said that it is even better. Most of the complaints I read hear seem to be from people who bought USED ones --- hey any car can be bad when you buy it used since it could have been wrecked or a flood car! The guy before me wrote about needing tires in 4k miles....HELLO!!! sounds like it has been wrecked by the prior owner w/ frame damage.

This is a great car, but I am also amused at some of the postings berating the car when they say they have a 2000 model. THERE WAS NO 2000 MODEL! The 1999 was the last Aurora before the new model came out as a 2001!!!!!

Audi A6 - very nice car, but not as powerful or good looking. Also a lot of upkeep required.

Nissan Maxima - who ever said Japan builds the best cars are brainwashed as this one was trouble from day one.

Jeep Grand Cherokee - nice, but too many squeaks/rattles.

New Trailblazer 2002 - Wifes truck, 270hp, seems great so far at 6700 miles.

Strength:

Powerful engine (atleast the V8 I got, I hear the V6 is peppy)
Amenities
American Made!
Seems very well built with nice touches thru-out.
OnStar
MANY MANY MORE!!

Weakness:

None that I can see yet...but I would prefer a more knowledgable dealer network.

A very smooth, quiet, powerful, and luxurious car. It is light years ahead of the 1997 Buick LeSabre I traded in. The Buick was nice, but the Olds just rides better (can take a corner w/o leaning badly, looks better, and speaks more European taste than the older mans's Lesabre.

I do reccomend this car, it is probably one of the best cars GM has to offer (in company with the Corvette and Seville STS). Plus, great deals are to be had with the phase out of Oldsmobile in the next 5 years. Free extended warranty too. So far I have 4500 miles and everything seems tight and trouble free. My old Lesabre had 98000 miles when I traded it and it was reliable, hopefully this Aurora will follow suit.

Similar Products Used:

1997 Buick Lesabre - good car, just old fashioned.
1999 Ford Taurus - company car, slow and not as refined by far. Of course it does not compete in the luxury market.
1995 Honda Accord - car before the LEsabre, nothing special about it. Was pretty reliable except for the 2 transmissions and dozen or so other service visits.

Strength:

Obviuos reliablity, luxury, power, value.

Weakness:

A little less sexy when compared to the older model, but still nice looking overall. The car is a few inches shorter than the old model BUT its more roomy.

I love the car. It is a replacement for my 1996 Aurora which I traded in with just over 178,000 miles. I still got a good trade value on the car as even used Auroras are in demand. The engine is the same general 4.0 V8 as my old Aurora, but much improved. My old Aurora was very good to me only needing a waterpump and regular maintenance its whole life. The best thing about this new model is that it makes the same 250hp - but on regular gas, whereas the old model called for premium fuel.

1996 Aurora - treated me well.
1992 Nissan Maxima - thank goodness for the "96 Aurora to get me out of it!

Strength:

Smooth V8, luxury appointments, VALUE, reliability (hey I got 18,000 miles so far w/o any trouble so far), looks, better than what Japan has to offer.

Weakness:

Dealerships

Very nice car, very nice. The car may not be a standout in the crowd, but it isn't ugly either. The front and sides are awesome, the rear is a little bland - sort of looks like a Taurus sometimes. But, many people look it over in traffic - wonder how many think its a Lexus since there is only one emblem that says Oldsmobile on the rear. The big 17" tires (on the V8 model, 16" on V6) in chrome turn heads. I also like the many do-dads and safety features. You can't touch a better equipped car with a V8 for this price! Gas mileage is not bad, either. Luxury abounds throughtout the car from the real wood trim, supple heated leather seats, rain sense wipers, stability system, OnStar. the list goes on!!

I will never by Foriegn again - no need to as long as cars like this can come out of the good old USA. Now, if GM could just build its other cars as good they'd be okay. Figures, the are going to drop Olds just when it gets its act together!!!!! Typical.

Similar Products Used:

1999 Lexus ES300 - just an overblown Toyota, over rated
2000 Toyota Camry - decent car, just too bland.
1997 Buick Regal - nice car, a little lacking in finesse.
1995 Cadillac Seville - terrible, but they're much better now I hear. I would have bought a new STS, but this Olds was $12k cheaper and also has a Northstar motor, stability control, and other same features.

Strength:

*Transmission is perfectly balanced for the weight of the car and power of the engine. Actually, this is the same trans used in the Cadillacs thus making this transmission "overpowered" for the car.
*Emenities are fantastic. I enjoy getting into a car that looks as sophisticated on the inside as on the outside.
*The car is heavy, but you wouldn't know it with the power you get out of the 4.0 v8 32 valve engine.
*Gas mileage is great for this size of car and engine performance. 28MPG on highway and 21-22MPG city.

Weakness:

Nothing... I am a car fanatic when it comes to car details. This car is built to last.
The only one thing that could be improved is the suspension. While the ride is smooth, the car seems to have too much memory of the road.

Prior to purchasing this car, I had been looking at a number of other cars ranging from Pontiac Grand Prix GTP to BMW 540 series. In my opinion, the Aurora is the best in class if you are looking for a car with power, looks and no end to emenities in "European" interior styling. You don't have to be wealthy to buy on of these babies used.

Weakness:

Some interior materials could be better quality. Paint job could be better.

I am very, very satisfied with my 1999 Aurora. It is extremely comfortable, smooth running, and remarkably reliable. Plus, the body is so unique and attractive. To me, the first generation Aurora is art in motion. The car's shape and back end remind me of the original (1966) Toronado, which was a milestone car for Oldsmobile as well.

I now have 27K miles on the car and have had so little trouble with the it over the course of 2 years. I haven't seen a dealer service dept. in well over a year. (I do my own preventative maintenance.) The few warranty claims I made after I bought the car were for cosmetic things.

The car runs very smoothly with the Autobahn package. The engine is responsive and runs flawlessly. The car well built -- its doors feel heavy.

When I purchased my Aurora new, I took advantage of a $4K rebate, plus I got the car for dealer invoice.

Now that the Olds division is being dismantled, I have become even more of a fan of my Aurora because of its uniqueness. I have a feeling the first generation Auroras will become collector choices in the future. The 2001 models are nice, but the first generation Auroras stand out as such a milestone for Olds.

Model Reviewed: Aurora 3.5

Strength:

The base model is loaded. Any additional equipment or packages are just laignappe. Other luxury sedans charge a premium for equipment that is standard on the Aurora 3.5.

Weakness:

No significant weaknesses to report at this time. However, I question GM's rationale for closing Oldsmobile's doors. Olds has the most attractive, well-made automobiles that GM has to offer. From the Alero to the new Bravada, all of these vehicles out-class its GM counterparts. Forshame. GM needs to rethink its decision. Revolution is a good thing.

Absolutely the most attractive GM product to date. I have studied this automobile for 4 months and it easily exceeded my impressions of other luxury cars that were being considered. Styling is still impecable. The interior is thoughtfully designed: all controls are made convenient, cabin is spacious, and the seating is luxurious. The Aurora handles like a smaller sports sedan while holding the road like a performace car should. The power and low-end torque available on the 3.5 litre justified saving money over the 4.0 litre. I test drove the S60 and 325i. It cost too much money to match the power, perfomance, and comfort offered by the Aurora. This is my first Aurora and my first "family" car. I am well pleased.

Strength:

Power, handling, pick-up. All very important aspects for buyers. The medium price is good for a high quality machine such as this. Luxurious and beautiful. Sure to catch a few eyes while driving.

Weakness:

Maintenance. Since it is mostly computerized many mechanics won't even touch it.

Smooth ride and very roomy inside. The power was very impressive and i like how the console is turned towards the driver so there is no uncomfortable reaching while wearing the seatbelt. Very quiet engine, couldn't even tell it was running while standing outside of the car. I like the outer design and the interior is comfortable. There were no odd sounds or squeeks while driving.
