Strength:

Performance at speed
Very comfortable
Great brakes 60-0 in 129 feet( as quick braking as a 2001 BMW M5 according to all sources)
Very reliable IF you know it's quircks and how to deal with them.

Weakness:

poor reliabilty , IF you dont know how to maintain it properly
Fuel consumption is in line with other V8 luxury sports sedans (which means hi).

Wonderful cars can do things mere mortals can't.
Example: drving about 100 mph uphill the long stretch of I 15 at 115F and 9000-9800 feet, with 2 heavy male passengers, a huge icechest, a full tank of gas, lots of luggage, the A/C on full blast with incredible smoothness and little effort.
All the while, other cars are having trouble maintaining just 65 mph due to the extreme heat and altitude going uphill.

Beautiful interior, very comfortable seats.

ATTENTION: This is a flagship luxury V8 sports sedan that would cost new 60,000. A lot of people can afford them used that have never been exposed to such.
This is the root cause of all the whining about it being expensive to maintain.
There are people on this board whining about spending a couple grand shortly after purchase. What do you expect? Nothing is free when you car depreciates by 50,000 in 10 yrs there is a reason for that. Those are completely normal expenses and likely would have cost you more in a comparable BMW or Mercedes that cost more, yet are less car!
When you buy a car in this class you have to expect shelling out of grand here and there for maintenance.
This applies ESPECIALLY if you or the previous owner have failed to a) put in a tranny cooler if u live in an area with warm summers ( that is the entire US!) b) FREQUENTLY flush the tranny c) DO THE GUIDES TO THE CAM CHAINS!!!!!!
If you own a 90-93 Q you must perform c) at no fail , it costs about $1200-1300 installed at a good independent ( dealer is much more), or you WILL lose your $12,000 engine.
(This applies to 90-93's only as 94's and up have an improved design guide)

Similar Products Used:

much much cheaper to maintain than comparable BMW, MB and in the long run cheaper than Lexus in the long run, (short run is more than Lexus).
More power and better suspension hardware than LS 400 in ANY model yr.

Strength:

Extremely powerful for the size of the car. Great used car value. I never would of thought that i would be able to afford such a high callibur automobile. Great balance between sport and luxury. Handles suprisingly good while also retaining a good highway ride. I have had good luck with it and from the way it sounds i think in about 5-6 years the new Q will be a
perfect replacement. I have actually had pretty good luck finding replacement maintanance parts for cheep. Brakes, rotors, struts and other
parts can be found at just about any reputable parts store. There aren't
very many cars that even attempt to pass you..evidenty they previously tried and got burnt. I just love pulling up against these kids with their
souped up loud sport compacts and just blow their doors off while you can
barely hear your cruiser run.. Their just aren't too many cars that can run with the big dogs.

Weakness:

V8 gas mileage. Parts are sometimes pricey. I realized when i purchased
it that it needed some maintanance parts but it goes with the territory.
Crappy stereo..Tape deck worked for about a day but i expected certain quirks for its age. Trans. went out at 158,000 miles and i was out $1500 for a rebuild
but that was still cheaper than the $3-5k wanted from dealership. Fuel pump went but from what i have heard that is pretty common. Eats brakes
but thats partially due to my driving habits. Stay away from the dealership unless you just like to be corn holed. A good independant
mechanic can be a money saver...After all its still just a Nissan with a luxury package.

Good car for the money..

Lexus LS400. BMW 7 series. Acura CL. Mercedes . For the money you cant go wrong. I know people who own LS 400s and they break down just as much the only differience is they innitially spent 5-6k dollars more for the same class of car. Has a nice blend of classic styling and refinement.

Strength:

Awesome looks and power. Distinctive cars that always get noticed.
The interior is one of the best I have ever seen.
Handling is superior when it's not snowing. (have another car for winter driving)

Weakness:

Tires and brake life. Only Michelin V rated tires have lasted.
Fuel mileage mediocre and it needs premium gas !
Have you ever seen a car so big with such a small back seat ??
You need another car to drive in snow, keep the Q in the garage !!!

My Q-45 is the finest automobile I've ever owned (I've had 9). It combines distinctive, Jaguaresque looks with monster performance and good reliability. You won't find a better all around luxury vehicle for the cost. That's the upside. The downside is that you need to have a very good mechanic that is familiar with the service quirks of the vehicle. I have found only one dealer out of three that could properly debug problems. Look for service mechanics that are part of the original Infinity trained team from 1989 !!!
Some service tips. Use only Michelin V-rated tires. Everything else will wear prematurely (especially OEM Dunlops) . Use gasoline additive fuel injector cleaner every 6,000 miles to try and keep injectors clean.

1992 Acura Legend - The Q beats it in every way.(Ok except fuel cost)
1994 BMW 740I - The Q's interior is much better and the Q has a better ride and stereo.

Strength:

Value, comfort and quiet ride in a good looking package

Weakness:

I don'r like the transmission shift settings, not positive about shifts between 2nd and 3rd

I am very impressed with this car, the value, the ride, the performance and the interior comfort. It is NOT a Mercedes 500, or BMW 750i but it is not at that pricepoint either. As a value, definitly a 10!

Similar Products Used:

BMW735 - This was a better driving car but weaker overall in the remaining catagories

Strength:

You can hit 100mph easy all most anywhere. On sharp turns this car holds and feels the road more then most of the cars I’ve drove in. The engine is a powerful 4.5 V8 that's what I really love about it. The interior is comfortable and the trunk size is also great.

Weakness:

The engine eats a lot of gas and the wheels should be larger and wider then they are, so the car can have more handling. Rear seats are kind of tight and small but can still fit 3 people easy. Every time I push the gas pedal hard after stopping on a red light or stop sign the car actually burns rubber automatically which uses up the tires quicker.

This car is one of the most exciting cars to own. I love this car because of all it can handle, it can handle New York life so I think it can handle almost anything. This car has hit bumps and received its dents and burses. But for the long run this car can out do almost any other 4door sports car in my opinion. It can probably run to 250,000 miles in my opinion without really breaking anything.

Similar Products Used:

Compared to the new Lexus Ls 430 and new 2000 Nissan Maxima. These cars don’t come near in performance and handling like the 1994 Q45a. They might be newer but they can’t drive anything like this car. The interior might be more technological but when it goes for engine power and beauty the Q45a is better then both.

Strength:

Power, handling, and appointments. Very comfortable and a true joy to drive. I easily drove 500 miles to Phoenix, AZ or 400 miles to San Francisco, without getting tired from being bounced around in the car. A wonderful travel vehicle!

Weakness:

None really. As a high quality performance vehicle, gas mileage was low. But that is not really a complaint.

This has been the most impressive automobile I have ever driven. I owned the Q45 for 9 years. Very quick when accelerating, very tight handling, and well-apointed. I drove the car for 100K miles before selling it. The vehicle was designed with no front radiator grill, but NEVER over-heated. Many people did not like the grill-less front, but the car had performance that was truly awesome. I regularly drove the car at 80-100MPH with no shake, rattle, and little wind noise. Maintenance costs were high, but not unexpected. The V8 engine is finely tuned, and needs the attention. I currently own a MB and the MB is not as much fun to drive as the 1992 Q45. I was going to purchase a 1996 Q45, but it did not have the performance or power of my 1992 Q45. The salesmen admitted that after 1994 the Q45 was "de-powered".

This vehicle is for individuals who like to drive, and who appreciate fantastic handling and performance. Not for those who feel that $30,000 is too much to pay for a car; or who changes the oil when the engine oil light comes on; is not willing to pay $200 or more per tire; or feel that $1,000 or more annually to maintain the automobile is ludicrous.

Similar Products Used:

I currently drive a 1997 MB and a 2000 QX4. The 1992 Q45 was much more fun than my current 1997 MB. More powerful than my current Infiniti QX4.

Strength:

The car drives well and wears well. It would be very sporting for one who drove in such a manner. I'm very pleased with the way all systems have maintained themselves. An anonymus car. No worries.

Weakness:

Gadgetry, attempt to be Euro.

Excellent car. Do your homnework as you are doing. No problems so far.
The car is comfortable, responsive, and has plenty of room for a large American male who is 6'3" and weighs 190', and carries a bike and luxury camping gear wherever he goes. It is gadgety, with stupid things I'd never use--rearview mirrors that point to where you want when backing up, some kind of automatic rearview mirror darkening system, outside temp reading. It's kind of like a Chrysler product that has Euro controls with Japanese quality.

So the whole thing is Euro-Chrysler, nothing to inspire confidence in my opinion. The controls are counter-intuitive, there are automated features to despise, as if the designers were guessing that Americans really wanted European features like window controls on the console combined with autodarkening and outside temp. These are meaningless and irritating features Americans who buy Chrysler products want. I'll spare you details of that, but it is a nice car.

Last owned a Lexus LS400. Better ergonomics, thicker leather, and much better gas mileage. Not as sporty or quick. Bigger inside and hauling was much better.
