Strength:
Handling is great. The AC I have to turn it down at times because you could freeze and it is on all the time. After 3 years you can still set a North Polar enviroment.
Weakness:
Can't remember any at the moment. It's a savage car. Yet I think I'll order a medal now when I retire it this week. I have taken it to Mexico, it's been all over New Mexico and now it is in Miami, Florida with 81000 miles and it still running OK. I have felt the aging a tiny bit, but to the way I drive this car is proven to last. The only problem I experience that came by nature was some oil leaking around 36000 miles and it was a seal on the left side of the engine. Besides that it's a great car. No enough space to list them all. Never, ever buy this car. This is the worst car I have ever owned. I have 68,000 miles on it and this months problem...the engine is dead, shot, no warning just stoped. Dealer has had my car for 3 weeks and it is still not fixed. Numerous trips to the dealer. Cadillac should be sued for this product. It really stinks. AAA knows by voice when I call in for a tow. Similar Products Used: Buick Riviera |

Cadillac Catera
I also have purchased a Catera more than 3 years ago for my son's graduation from high school. He is now ready to graduate from college and has driven the vehicle only 3 months (it has been sitting at the dealership while I make the payments for 3 years). At 4,500 miles, a pulley snapped and destroyed the engine (for which there was a recall). Cadillac is NOW telling me that it will cost me an additional $2,000 from MY pocket to fix the vehicle because they do not cover the labor/parts to get to the part that is covered under the recall. I am asking that anyone else who has had dealings with Cadillac and has been given the run around or the "it will cost you" please e-mail me with a synopsis of your dealings/problems with Cadillac as I do believe I'm going to file suit against them and am considering class action. Your information will NOT be provided to anyone besides the involved attorney(s). Thank you so much |

I dont think there is enough space to list them all. You name it and I am sure that there is a problem with it!!! When I first purschased this car I thought I was getting a quality vehicle because thats what I expect from a caddy! It had 25,000 miles on it and the first month of driving it was great! Then the troubles began. So far its on its 3rd battery, 4th remote keyless entry transmitter, 2nd air injector pump and as far as I know the 2nd set of brakes. The dealership blamed the batter going dead b/c of a L.E.D. on a cig lighter adapter. The gas mileage is extremely poor, it sometimes takes over steering and goes whatever direction it wants and I am starting to notice that that its eating tires. The car only has 30,000 miles on it now and I talked to the dealership about doing something about it and they would set me up in a new car, but it would cost me big. When I told them that wasnt an option they told me that it was my problem. I did some reasearch on this car before I bought it, but appearently no where near enough. I am really disappointed that Cadilliac would put there name on such a pile of junk and not admit that it was a mistake. I think that this is the last Cadilliac I will ever purchase, and from now on I think that Lincon will appreciate my money and business!!! |

Strength:
I really like the roominess and comfort of the interior of the car. And I like the solid heavy feel of this car. Also I must say that the Cadilac customer service rep was very responsive calling us while tracking the water pump from Europe and across the nation it arrived at our dealership as promised.
Weakness:
Reliability and dependability. Wow, in attempting to find out information on our latest problem with our '97 Catera I came apon this and am glad we weren't the only people who have made a poor expensive choice in purchasing a car! We purchased our car new off the lot and I have personally washed her every week since. Yes, this car eats the tires and replacements are not easy to get and are not cheap our dealership said they couldn't align the front end or get us tires the second time we were in for tire replacement, or was it the third. It also drinks the coolant, I have no idea where it is going, only know it smells hot every time I turn the thing off. I have begun to forget all of things we have had it in the shop for, it is becoming a miserable blurrrr. I wish I had a nickle or even a penny for every minute I waited in the repair waiting room. When one of the two water pumps went out we even had to wait a week for a new one to be shipped from Europe! We have also had the heater valve fail, at first the service rep didn't believe such a thing could happen, coolant dumping out from under the hood when the air conditioner was turned on, got to teach him just one more thing that would need to be fixed on a Catera. Currently the thing is leaking transmission fluid and the fuel pump just went out. Oh but all you have to do is bang on the gas tank while someone else cranks it over and she will start. So remember to always carry a rubber hammer, you could be next. I think I forgot to mention the brakes, that was another trip to the rapairman and after about 6 months with new everything they have begun to squeal again. These repairs are not convenient or cheap. where do we start!!!! bought car with 27,000 miles, very clean and loaded to the max. problems started within 1 month with the bose sound system not picking up channels and fading. this car eats tires and the brakes are always sqeaking. the sunroof has stuck a couple fo times and the daytime running lights have been repaired twice. the valve cover gaskets needed replaced at 28,500 miles for the second time.the camshaft gear needed to be replaced at the same time. the transmission is constantly shifting at the 55 mph speed limit and the gas mileage is no better than 22 mpg. the car does handle extremely well and feels very solid as you drive it. Great Bose radio, smooth ride, nice interior, comfy HEATED :) seats. Controls are easy to reach for driver. Stylish body. Nice to say I own a Caddie. Self tinting rear view mirror is a plus. I get unusually good gas mileage 25 - 29.
Weakness:
Cadillac doesn't like to fix them, or plays the "I don't know" card way too often. Tap window controls are very annoying when you want the window to open a crack. If you plan on keeping this car please find a Catera Owners Group. There is a great one on Yahoo. Next step is to find a dealer you can trust. Just because it's German doesn't mean quality on this one! The fear of something major going wrong will cause me to sell this car in spring of 2004 REGARDLESS of anything else going wrong. I bought this car on a total impulse. I didn't research or review anything. Fortunately I have only had one MAJOR problem with this car, the oil cooler went 14 days after owning it. Of course North Shore would not help, so it cost me $800 to have Metro Cad fix it. After that I have had no real problems with it. The sun roof has stopped on a couple of occations. Remotes are terrible, two new batteries in less that 6 months. Chews through tires like candy. Tires were new at purchase and are now starting to cup. I rotate every 500 miles or bi-weekly. Front brakes go fast!! Check often. I too have a hot smell coming from the engine compartment after driving. That started after the oil change and tranny fluid change. Tranny flush and fill is $100!! Pricey to maintain!!!! Went to the oil lube loint and was told they needed a "special wrench" to change the oil. What is that about? I was going to buy a Taurus SHO but bought this instead.. I am getting the SHO in spring of 04. I am not trying to slam the car but it is HIGH maintenance. I can do better for my buck. Similar Products Used: Taurus Jetta 176,000 miles and still strong!! Too many to even begin! WHAT A LEMON!! This car is one diaster after another. I cannot believe Cadillac would place their name of a piece of crap such as this one. The coolant is constantly leaking, the leveling light winks at you almost daily, it is terrible on tires, it is now leaking oil at only 58,000 miles and attempting to take off on a cold start feels like you are dragging the bottom of a rock filled lake. I am terrbily disappointed. This was a costly mistake on my part. Ladies, please do not purchase a car because it is CUTE!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK and learn from my mistake. |
