Strength:

stylish, great sound system, comfortable.

Weakness:

electrical and front suspension and alignment problems.

I bought my Catera in Feb 2002 and like many of you, I have had nothing but problems. After going back and forth with Cadillac and the Used Car Sales Manager at Audette Cadillac about how the sales person mislead me during the purchase and all of the problems that I have had, I am still stuck with the car. The Used Car Manager had promised me she would try to work something out, but it turned out it was only a numbers game and I was going to have to take a huge loss on the car. I bought the car with only 21,000 miles on it. I now have almost 60,000 miles on the car and a file folder 2" thick on service bills. Thank goodness for the 100K mile warranty I did buy for the car, but it has been a huge inconvenience. Repair visits to the dealer included: window controls power steering pump engine cooler leaks sensors replaced (2) Timing belt recall sunroof opens on it own CD player wasn't working (2) steering wheel controls didn't work (2) Gas tank replaced left strut replaced tie rood replaced wheel bearing replaced steering link replaced fog lights keep burning out etc. I still have a major problem going on in the front end and the mechanics at the dealership can't seem to figure out what it is. When driving at slower speeds over bumps the car rattles in the front end. I can't tell if it is the left or right side and even though they have replaced some parts, it has not corrected the problem. If any one has had the same problem......please contact me and give me some advise. The lights will go on and off whenever they feel like. Dealership cannot duplicate. Transmission is not shifting as smoothly as it once did (I did have the trans fluid changed at 30k miles) not that it matters with this car. My key has gotten stuck in the ignition once or twice, but hasn't happen since. I would like to think that GM is concerned about their future business and would extend some special offer to get us to buy another GM. This was my first GM in 15 years....maybe I will go back to buying Fords. I am disappointed in the car, the dealership and the company.

"strengths" related to this car...are you kidding? The owner of this car is who has strength.(along with your wallet) But unfortunalty you couldnt have enough strength in the world to take on the problems this car has, and not enough strength to fight GM!!

Weakness:

Tie rods, coil packs, relays, cam shaft, sensors, tail lights, ohhh I'm afraid to continue. (Afraid it might need another repair before I am done with this entry)

I hate this car! period! All I can say, never buy a used catera! If anything goes wrong with this car, you better be prepared to fork out serious cash!. Rear wheel drive. Take the bus instead.

This car sucks! It's not worth it. I wanted to trade it in for a truck and blue book value was only $4500. I cant believe it depreciated so much. Not to mention this car is awful in the winter.

Pick one a part on the car

This vehicle is a complete waste of money. It has been in the shop more than 45 times in 5 years all service is well documented. Parts for this vehicle are atronomically expensive. This vehicle has cost me more than 3000 in three months and not to mention that the re-sale value is non-existent. I cannot express how much disappointment I have in this brand. Although the dealership and customer service has been very helpful but really how much can they really do?

Strength:

Beautiful inside and out. Comfortable memory seats, a lot of luxury.

Weakness:

When you see this car you expect that it has a CD player. Mine didn't have it. Repairs too expensive - even break pads are 5 times more then for other cars. Cadillacs can only be fixed with special keys that only authorized dealers can do. Get rid of this car if you don't have a warranty on it. Rear wheel drive is awful in snow.

This luxury car requires luxurious pockets. I just traded it in for a new Honda Element. I really liked how this car drives and interior is superb, however, it scared the heck out of me with the strange noises it was producing.

This was the only luxury car we owned. I figured that many features are unnecessary. Cadi is old people's car.

Needs more engine power To Exspensive to get parts for, I think cadillac knows they messed up with the car and thats why they wont return my calls! Security System is lacking!

I Bought this car a while back and have had a few problems, AC went out and was exspensive to fix, but I find that regular maintenace keeps the car in great shape, I only have 60,000 miles on it but runs well, There are rattles when I hit bumps that are impossible to find, but all I say to that is turn up the music louder!!!

Strength:

Bose stereo system, road handling, comfortable interior, low road noise.

Weakness:

Mechanical mess. Expensive parts, hard to obtain.

I want to add my review to the list of negative ones. I purchased the car because of the Cadillac name and expected that kind of performance. To make a long story short, the timing seal blew, blew out all the oil and ruined my engine. I was told it would cost $12,000 to replace the motor. I had an extended warranty on the car, called that company but they denied coverage stating" faiure due to lack of lubrication". I had to get an attorney involved to get the warranty company to pay for the timing seal that blew out and the towing fee. They still would not pay for the motor, stating they were looking at a $12,000 claim against a $1200 premium. The car has been sitting at the dealership for 10-1/2 months. The attorney and the dealer have tried to locate a motor. No rebuilt motors available. To rebuild one will cost $16,000+. They have found a couple of used motors, not sure at this time about the milage on those motors, but the cost will certainly be more than the car is worth. I have made it my mission to inform all Catera owners to get rid of this car as soon as possible.

Beautiful car, good sound system

Weakness:

Bad engineering. Parts are expensive and hard to get. Every repair no matter how small was a majoy issue.

This car is a piece of junk. Cadillac should be sued for putting it on the street. I have had to replace the radiator, cooling system, the coolant mixes with the oil and oozes a brown sludge, this has happened a number of times with great amounts of steam and sludge bubbling out of the car. It stays in the shop more tha it's out. the mechanics don't know what to do with it. Armen of Ardmore the dealership would not even talk to me until I filed a claim with the Attorney General. they still will not get me out of the deal, they should have just taken this car back and scrapped it. I just got it back from being in the shop the whole summer and guess what the check engine light is on again. i am going to roll it to the first place that i can get rid of it. I will never buy another GM vehicle again.

Strength:

Great design and looks, super performance. Classy interior, I love every aspect of this car.

Weakness:

The one and only thing i wish it had was a more powerful engine, but it does perform adequately.

I purchased this car from Classic Chevrolet in Owasso Oklahoma about a year ago and I have truly enjoyed the car. It had 48,000 when i purchased it and I also purchased an extended warranty. I have had one small problem with the car and it was a minor repair covered with the extended warranty. I feel that the extended warranty is a must but with that in my back pocket, I am driving the heck out of this car with no worries. I read all the reviews before buying this car and I bought the warranty with the idea that I will enjoy this car for the life of the extended warranty and then I will be in a position to get out of the vehicle if I need to. With all that said, I have driven just about all the major brands of luxury vehicles and I am just as satisfied with this caterra as I was with my Acura Legend. By the way, I truly believe the dealership makes the difference. When I did have the car in for it's one and only repair, Classic Chevrolet gave me a rental car no questions asked and they fixed my car promptly with no questions asked. P.S.-- If you will do your scheduled maintenance on this car, as with any car, it WILL perform to your wishes.

Strength:

Handling is great! Bose stereo is awsome! Nice styling! Trans Sport Mode/Winter Mode is cool! Smooth ride! Finally cup holders that don't get in the way!!! Nice trunk capacity! Competitive bumper-to-bumper warranty! On-Star system is great, even @ $30 a month!

Weakness:

Gas mileage --pretty poor @ 16 mpg highway. Stock Alarm is lacking. Expensive to maintain. Could use a little more room in the back seat. Some rattles no one can figure out. Could have more standard features like heated front seats.

Well, I got a really great deal on this car! The dealer was asking $17,999 on the lot, but I saw that he had also posted the car on Ebay for $11,400. I was the high bidder and picked it up for just above its trade-in value which according to KBB was $10,900. It's crazy the amount of mark-up on these cars. It had 35,000 miles on it with the remainder of the original warranty to 50,000 miles. Overall, I like the car. I've had it for 2 months now and haven't had much to worry about. The car has been to the dealer twice for warranty work--the front suspension has been rattling for some time and they still haven't fixed it yet--that upsets me a little. Other things that went wrong were not major--just little stuff that irritated me. I did have to have the a/c air filter replaced and the dealer charged me 25.00 labor for something i could have done in 5 minutes. This car is expensive to maintain, which is surprising. My Saab and BMW were less expensive, when it came to replacing the air filters at least. The Catera handles just as well as my 1998 BMW 528i and much, much better than my 1995 Saab 9000 CSE Turbo. As far as power goes, the Catera's 200-hp V6 does well, but isn't as powerful as my previous two cars. I am a little disappointed with that. The car is comfortable, but not as much as the BMW or Saab. Alarm is pretty lame--no alarm indicator (red flashing light to let thieves know your car has an alarm) on the dash. Instead of a panic button on the remote, they put a gas cap release button--give me a break. If it weren't for the On-Star system being able to track the car if it gets stolen, I would be down at Best Buy getting a new alarm system installed! Overall, for the price, I am happy. I drive the car 50 miles roudtrip each day and it performs well for a commuter car (much better than a Ford Taurus or Toyota Camry which my company gives out). OH--gas mileage is disappointing. I get about 16 mpg. Much lower than the window sticker said I would get. Maybe the poor mileage is b/c I have the transmission in Sport Mode all the time. New this car cost $35,000 according to the window sticker--I wouldn't pay that for the car when you can buy a BMW or Benz, but at $11,400 it's well worth it! Another plus, my car insurance went down 15%, so that's good. It's not a BMW 528i, but given all the American cars out there, the Catera is certainly near the top and I would recommend it. P.S. I did buy an extended warranty for up to 100,000 miles or until 08/2005.
