Strength:

Very roomy, my friends and i got seven people in there comfortably! More reliable than many modern cars. It keeps going and going and going...

Weakness:

Poor accereration, but what do you expect from a tank? Only has a 283. Starting to leak in various spots.

I love this car. I got it from my parents and and it just won''t die. It has been on 4 6000km road trips with out one problem. Has 400,000km and with no big problems, recently replaced alternator and rebuilt carb but thats it.

see above. Size, mileage and comfort

Weakness:

Poor attention to details. Broken door lock switches ( flimsy construction) needed a new water pump at 30,000 miles needed new rotors at 32,000 miles. Automatic wipers have never worked.

Excellent road car. Highway mileage is superb( over 30mpg), car is comfortable and quiet, and roomy.

Strength:

Excellent gas mileage with the normally aspirated 3.8L. Great sounding stereo.

Weakness:

The GM transmission will slip. Lots of quirks. Quality needs to be 20% better for the price tag

I have several comments to make. First the accolades. I love the 3.8L engine. Easily gets 33 mpg. Great range with the 18 gallon tank. I have all the extras including the gran tourning suspension which I love. Brakes are excellent as is the stereo. Now the quirks. Unfortunately there are several. First, the lights in the rear view mirror are disaster as the switch to turn on is flush with the mirror causing one to have to explore to manually turn on the light. Secondly, the guages and idiot lights need revamping. I don't like crooked lights. Next, the door panels squeak. Why, because 2 types of plastic are used for the interior door handle, one is soft; the other is hard. This is where the squeak occurs. Don't mean to unload, but the next thing that bothers me is that in a normal vehicle, you move your hand to the power window switch and it's right there. With this car I constantly lower the back window. Seems you have to reach forward to work the drivers window. As long as this model has been in production (since 1991 I believe) one would think GM would have been able to resolve these problems. The transmission, ergonomics, and general overall quality is not worthy of a $38000 retail price tag.

Strength:

Strong supercharged V6. Several top of the line extras.

Weakness:

Elictric wendows and sunroof quit working off and on. They are worth nothing as soon as you drive off the lot when buying new. Only offered $5-$7K on trade in excellent condition when Kelly and NADA list it at $95K

I would by a used one again to keep until the heap. Bought it 3 years old for this price with the origional sticker in the glove box listing it for over $36,000. Depresiated over 50% in 3 years.

Strength:

I have lost confidence in this Park Avenue.

Weakness:

It has been in the shop around 150 days since purchase. Defects: security system, radio, alternator, load leveler, transmission, electric rear view mirror, handle pulled loose, gas gauge malfunction, road noise, air noise around doors, etc.

After owning four Park Avenues, this will be my last. It has just been full of problems and no one at the company will listen. -- I have called the 800 number and written letters. It is always the go around or no response. Additionally, I am fed up with the comsumer questionnaires by phone and mail that keep expressing concern about my feelings toward the car -- I have always responded and nothing happens -- giving me the impression that no one really cares.
My local dealer has tried to work with me and get it fixed but I did not purchase this quality of car to have it in the shop so much. In the meantime, I am begging rides from friends.
I even suggested that they buy my car back or that we work out a favorable trade for another car. All the company could talk about was that they would call my dealer to get the "problems" fixed on my present car.

Electronics nightmare: seat heaters, altenator, dashboard electronics all out. Cheap touches: cloth covering over visors coing off, plasticky glove compartment. 3 batteries (Delco).

Hard to recommend a vehicle I had so many problems with.

Model Reviewed: Buick Park Avenue Ultra

Strength:

Supercharged 240hp V6 has been a pleasant performer. I have yet to experience any drivetrain problems. I am at 37K miles on a vehicle built in April of 1999. The car takes corners pretty good(a bit of body roll and it's expected because it's a big car). I feel the interior is roomy and comfortable for one to four, and no more. Insurance rates are pretty low since I am in the most expensive age bracket. The car is pretty tough. I rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and totaled the Jeep while causing moderate damage ($2750) to my front. I drove away and he didn't. That made me a believer in this car. It may have some cheap materials, and a few problems with the generic GM parts, but this car will take care of you, and look good at the same time. My car was a rental, but the seats and carpet don't look or feel worn at all. It is a car that has given me, an ungrateful driver, much to appreciate. Size is perfect. It's not too big like an 1981 Ford LTD, but it's not small like the BMW 3 series, it's just right (for me and the other three adults, including the BMW 318i owner).

Weakness:

There is a quirky noise when the HVAC switches from hot to cold. I think it's the vacuum door that switches the two. It keeps making a sound like someone who is puckering their lips and exhaling at the same time. Dealer said it's normal. Oh well, playing the radio drowns the sound. The body lines on my car aren't exact. They are fair. I looked at the 2001's and they showed the same problem. Put your finger under the driver's side headlamp and repeat on the passenger side headlamp. You will notice that the gap between the lamps and the fender is not equal on both sides. I would not buy this car new, it's too overpriced for the average workmanship you get. Used, this car is a wonderful deal.

This is not the best car in the world. To me, it is the best car for MPG, safety, power, and total cost. STS has lower MPG, insurance is higher, and STS has similar faults with it's generic GM parts. I would buy another Ultra. I have looked around for a better car, and I can't find the balance the Ultra has to offer. I did not initally like this car, but bought it for purely common sense reasons. Now, after 8 months, I cannot think of paying my own money for another, I am too cheap. I hope that Buick doesn't cheapen future Ultra's with the same workmanship as mine. Mine had walnut woodgrain detailing inside. 2000 and 2001's I saw in the dealer showroom did not. I have to thank my salesman as well. He took care of me when I bought the car, and continues to take care of me when I go in for service. I have only a few complaints. The rest are glowing positives.

Strength:

Big, safe, fast, comfy, looks pretty mean (black), handles pretty good for big sedan. Seems bullet-proof

Weakness:

Not much. Needs driving lights, the seat heaters have been a problem. Crappy standard tires

Paid 18800 and got a bargain. I have put 10 K on it and loved every minute of it. BTW, gets great mpg for a big, powerful car. Try 28.2 on a 900 mile trip w/the pedal to the metal and 25 avg. I highly reccomend it.

The amenities; head up speedometer, heated seats, marvelous sound/cd changer, windshield wiper control.

Weakness:

Just too large, but very comfortable for everyone on board.

$29,000. Guy at the inspection station said the emissions were the lowest he had seen on anything he tests! Wonderful long range cruiser but it handles expressway ramps very well. Always secure feeling.

High tech stuff is bulletproof. But suspension, Water pump and lo tech stuff is a problem.

traded it today. sigh!

I had a Cadillac before the Ultra, and in past, owned
a Park Avenue, but the Ultra is the way to go. It out
performs the Caddie. Best car I have ever owned and
is virtually maintenance free.
