on very smooth new asphalt at about 55 mph rides smoothly. don't accelerate. Apparently several people like this model.
Weakness:
Frontend ,doorlocks, transmission, somewhat rumbling ride, very poor paint.Suggest: buy this Buick only if you have a second reliable car, have a very patient person available to take car for repair. You really have to be able to afford this nice looking clunker. Mileage now 69000. Minor problems soon following delivery: doorlocks[locked out repeatedly], vibrating front, seatbelt locking up ,leaking rt headlight assembly, heater didnt work, radio fading and interference all requiring numerous visits. Car wouldnt start[4 visits 3 with overnite stay]. At about 30 000mi transmission failed and after many visits replaced with "rebuilt", which now again failed,at 65000, and expired ext warrantee.Frontend still vibrates, after repeatd alignment.ON the whole very poor paintjob{black}, wonder if waterbased paint was used?? Strength:
Comfortable vehicle for highway driving. Great space in the trunk. Sufficient power from a reliable V6.
Weakness:
Small irritating electrical problems. Transmission chatter and shift problems that should be a recall issue. Down time while all the little items are constantly being attended to. We bought the vehicle new. It has been a headache before and after the warranty expired. One transmission was replaced under warranty and then the dealer told us it required replacement again just out of warranty at our expense. Took the vehicle to an independent transmission shop and the problem was repaired for $600.00 - a faulty valve. The dealer quoted around $3,000.00! The fuel economy increased by 20% after replacing this valve. Now, with 40K miles, there are numerous electrical problems associated with the computer function. Fuel guage, dash guages, radio, memory seats etc. We are on the second sending switch in the fuel tank going to a third. Don't let the dealer suggest that to fix this problem you have to remove the tank. There is an access hole in the bottom of the trunk. The biggest disapointment has been the total lack of understanding or assistance from the dealer network (We had it serviced at more than one). Sorry GM but this will be the last vehicle we purchase from you. I think Lexus has a lot more going for it with similar $$. 3800 engine ...may go over 300,000 miles easily with proper care and regular maintainence....nice smooth ride, quiet at highway speeds ...decent fuel economy for a car its size(25mpg on the highway)...A/C works very well and never needed any repair or recharge, ... uses R-12 refrigerant never needed to convert to R-134a....very dependable car year round...has factory streo am/fm radio and still has a nice sound...stainless steel exhaust system...tires last 75,000 miles or better....other than fluid leak, transmission has been trouble free....car is 14 years and the body has only minor surface rust...electronic climate control has always been trouble free
Weakness:
Interior is failing fast...leather seats are deteriorating, ceiling lining is falling down, power door locks have now become inoperable and power windows are getting slower, interior door panels are breaking due to the plastic used to hold them together is failing, drivers seat broke loose...had to replace cracked aluminum seat brackets with steel ones(fabricated the parts myself)...power steering pump needs fluid every once in awhile, engine leaks a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so.... I purchased this car with 116,000 miles on it and have owned it for over 7 years...it now has over 230,000 miles on it and it runs very well....I am the third owner of this vehicle ...the previous owner used this car mostly to commute back and forth to work...approx..60 miles per day ....the fuel economy has dropped from 29 to 25 mpg over the past couple of year even after tune ups and replacement of all ignition parts and coil packs....perhaps due to the age of the engine....the drive train is in excellent condition...I have spent maybe $2000 in repair costs in the 7 years I have owned this car....new main computer, brake system overhaul, new CV boots, new coil packs, transmission fluid leak repair and replaced the alternator are the only major repairs I had done to this vehicle ...the transmission still shifts smoothly and the exhaust system has never needed replacing...it still has the original stainless steel exhaust system(you got to love it)...the best car I have ever owned and I would not hesitate to buy another older Buick Park Avenue(1988-1990)...even if it does look like a grandma car Similar Products Used: 1985 chevy clebrity(junk mobile)...1987 mazda 626(a fine machine) |

Power, dependability, milage and comfort.
Weakness:
In trying to find the horn relay, it became obvious that they need to label them somehow since there are about eight of them. Makes it difficult to determing which one is the horn relay. Also, no clue as to how to pull them out as there appears to be some kind of locking device holding them in. Anyone with the knowledge on this, I would appreciate the info. Absolutely love the car. A few minor problems, such as the high beam switch does not work all the time due to the plastic cover on the steering wheel being loose. Can make it work by holding it in place when operating it. Also the horn does not work. Fuses are okay, and so are the horns. Suspect the horn relay. The milage is great averaging 24, which includes a lot of in town stop and go and many short trips. The power in the 3.8L motor is fantastic, it does not need a turbo in by opinion. I have been a GM fan for many many years and this one has not disappointed me at all. Consider this. We bought it with 143000 miles and it is just over 180000 miles now with no problems. Similar Products Used: 1070 buick electra limited. 455HO, factory. Two door hard top. 1978 buick regal. |

Strength:
Exellent ride and handling, good power, low maintenance cost so far for a car of this age. Very pleased with power versus gas mileage ratio.
Weakness:
The PAINT appears to be below average, as several areas on the hood and roof have flaked off. There is no rust or body damage, just exposed primer. Good, overall appearance but does not have the luster that it should have (it is washed weekly). I have always owned Buicks, and this one has lived up to my expectations of the Buick/GM name. I purchased it used in mid-2001 at considerably below wholesale, with 82K miles. Now, at 102K miles, it has proven to be a reliably good car. It has a very smooth and luxurious ride, many interior extras, plenty of seating room (I am 6'2".), easily get 22-23 mpg! commuting to work (18 miles one way, country/city)--all this with the sufficient horsepower of the standard 3.8L engine. It does have an oil leak--within tolerance but will probably have to be fixed eventually. The leather upholstery is still in good condition, and the other interior trim does not show any noticeable fading or unusual wear. All of the "gadgets" work fine. I will certainly consider the Buick line for my next car. Similar Products Used: 1981 Skylark, 1986 Regal, 1989 Park Ave. |

Comfortable ride. Decent mileage for such a large car.
Weakness:
Brakes vibrate; battery leaks; trunk leaks; door handles break. Bought the car used and am fairly happy, but only because I've been able to fix all the problems myself. Still, I wouldn't buy another one. Right after I bought the car, I noticed that the trunk leaked and there were inches of standing water in the spare wheel compartment caused by a gap in the welding, which I filled with epoxy. Shortly thereafter, the battery went out and I discovered it had been leaking acid. This was caused by a battery terminal attach bolt that was too long, which had cracked the battery when inserted all the way. (Check this before you replace your battery and use a couple of washers if necessary to prevent cracking the battery). The driver's side door handle broke on me. The brakes vibrate the car when applied. I've replaced the front rotors and pads, but the problem remains. I'm going to replace the back rotors and pads next. The car also occasionally hesitates during acceleration, especially when the weather is warm. I still haven't figured that one out. All in all, this car would be very expensive to own if I wasn't doing all the work myself and I would be livid if I had bought it new. Buick really ought to do a better job making a car that is its flagship. |

Watch out as the miles go by. It is a good car for the first 15,000 miles. Then you are in for trouble. Beware of getting screwed by Buick. I bought a Park Avenue new, plus the extended warranty. At 75,000 miles the car turned to crap. The paint began to crack, door handle broke, window swith broke, door lock collapsed indide the door panel, cruise control went out. Although some of these items were reported before the warranty was up, the dealer stalled. When I called Buick, it was "tough luck, your warranty is up". This car sucks, and Buick sucks big time. Watch out if you buy a Buick. If you plan to drive it a while and avoid wasting resources, you are in for trouble. There surely are better car companies out there |

Strength:
Absolutely none. Well, i do like the look of the car. But it's such a piece of junk it makes me sick every time i go to get in the thing.
Weakness:
See above, not to mention the level of service you get from GM is ZERO. This is the worst car I have ever had the displeasure of owning in my life. It is poorly designed, poorly engineered, poorly built and is a piece of junk. I would recommend anyone thinking of buying a 97 or up Park Avenue to avoid it like the plague. The major problem for me is that the cheap plastic intake manifold that GM has elected to install on this car cracked. When that happened, coolant flooded my crankcase and mixed with the oil while driving on an 18 lane highway. The result was a seized engine at 126,000 km or about 65,000 mile i would guess. The cost to repair this problem alone (i.e. cracked plastic intake manifold leading to complete failure) was $5,000.00 Canadian. I have written GM, called GM, talked to dealers. GM has offered me $800.00 compensation for my $5,000.00 problem. I told them see you in court, and I am not kidding. This car has been babied, looked after, I even had the bumpers repainted last year to keep it looking good. Then they tell me that it's my fault and that it's 800 bucks take it or leave it. Well i have learned through the internet that this is a very COMMON problem with all type K Buick Motors (i.e. nonsupercharged 3800 Series 2 motors) The EGR valve which operates at 700 degrees celscius, or about 1,300 F feeds exhaust directly into the plastic plenum. Over time the plastic melts, eventually cracking and you have a HUGE problem. Like you need a new engine if you don't catch it problem. This car has automatic wipers, an automatic rear view mirror, traction control, air shocks in the back, a compass in the mirror, 6 different sun visors, like 4 cigarette lighters (and i don't even smoke!!) All this junk you don't need. But when it comes to an engine they elect (the accounts??) to use a cheap plastic intake manifold that eliminates any sense of reliability. Please tell me that this is a joke. You spend money giving me junk i don't need, but skimp on quality on the engine???? What would it have cost to manufacture an aluminum intake manifold - $20 bucks more than the plastic one????? Thanks GM I was lucky I wasn't killed by a truck on the highway. GM is well aware of this problem but in full denial mode. Ford had been using the plastic manifolds on their crown victorias, but recalled them. AVOID AVOID AVOID, can i possibly make myself more clear. Further nightmare problems: A trunk that fills up with water sometimes 10" deep Dash lights burning out in the radio, heater control head, heated seat switch, door lock switch. These lights are soldered in and can not be replaced. If you want to see your heater control centre, you need to buy a completely new head for $850.00. For a burned out BULB! The car is on it's third alternator. 2'nd Delco battery, ok i can accept that. The alarm sounds sometimes as I AM DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. The rear window defroster CAUGHT ON FIRE. Yep, the car filled with smoke one time when I turned the defroster on. Still haven't bothered to fix that one. Rear brake rotors that warp every 35,000 km. Poor quality leather that is cracking up. A heated seat that no longer works. A creakie suspension system in the front end that makes lots of noise with every curb you have to climb. Oh yeah, an air conditioning compressor that the bearing is burning out on. Water pump replaced Power door lock switch that broke. Very noisy heater fan. This car is TERRIBLE. A steering wheel that has NEVER locked since day one. No wonder GM has lost so much market share in the mid to full size car market. It's a good thing i also own a nice reliable 75 Triumph TR6 or I would be out of luck. My Buick has been on the hook 4 times in the last 4 months. I will never ever buy another GM product again.
