A6 Wagon
Strength:
Quattro system, comfortable ride, and good looks.
Weakness:
Inherent door stiffness, weak power, and very costly service for routine elements. Plus we were not provided any options for repairs on brakes and airconditioning. Just buy a new one... The final action from the dealer always involved throwing new parts at any difficulty without having the ''service agents'' having the slightest clue as to alternatives. Blaming us for ''blowing out a radio'' during a battery replacement -- which was the 4th radio in 5 years -- Audi refused recourse with their ''no appeal'' system. We were so infuriated that we traded the car off for a Toyota product to find that their mechanics were able to reset the security device so that a new radio/cassette system was not needed. No more Audis for us. We found the A6 to be a nice fit for snowy weather in PA once we put Nokia all weather tires on the vehicle. However, the service provided by the dealer and supported by Audi left much to be desired. Similar Products Used: Volvo -- 850 sedan and Toyota Highlander 2001 model. |

/A 6 4.2
Strength:
Quality build. Smooth V8 power and torque. Five speed automatic. Beautiful to look at and sit in. QUATTRO. Handling that surprises. Great value when you compare it an equally equipped BMW 540i or MB 430 4-Matic.
Weakness:
Needs more side bolstering in the front seats to prevent you from sliding around. The sports seats should be available w/o ordering the sports package. I didn''t get the sports package b/c I was concerned with ground clearance for the front bumper, but I have the optional 17" forged wheels and performance tires. The P255/40 ZR17, Perelli P6000 tires provide excellent grip, but they follow every grove on the freeway, which is very tiring and disconcerting at high speed. I waited on the sideines for years, waiting for Audi to put the right engine/car combination together. During this time, I played with my miata and suffered through a SUV (wife wanted it badly). I initially intended on purchasing a S4, because of its performance and sportiness. In the end, however, I bought the A6 4.2 for its beauty, safety (optional rear side air bags and std side curtains), spot on combination of comfort and handling, and magnificant V8 and transmission. It is a joy to drive with power on demand and enough handling to shoot through high speed sweepers, putting a smile on your face. The ride is a wonderful compromise between handling and comfort. I have been very impressed at how the suspension dampens road irregularities while providing a very high grip on high speed sweepers. Audi interiors have always been a lesson in functionality, qualtiy, beauty, and engineering. The 4.2''s interior makes BMW and MB look cheap in comparison. The leather used on the seats looks much more expensive than that used by BMW, which seams to show wear very quickly. MB leather does look like leather. The dealership has treated us very well, giving us a great price for the car and treating us to approx $200 worth of accessories. I have yet to use the service department. The 4.2 seems to have an exellent reputation for reliability so I am not concerned about being stranded or annoyed by recalls (BMW fires?). In summary, this is a beautiful car inside and out that is a wonderful example of German engineering. The car wraps you in luxury while providing you with outstanding power and handling. A6 4.2
Strength:
V8 power, Bose stereo, comfort after hours behind the wheel, decent mileage.
Weakness:
Dealer network and customer service. You may or may not get an Audi to drive when you take yours in for service. During a recent road trip, I manually computed my average mpg and compared it against the car computer. The car computer was consistently 1.8 mpg higher. Dollar for dollar, feature for feature this is the best value in it''s class. Design is timeless, drive is comfortable, quick and quiet. Comfort is unbelieveable - you don''t tire of this. I have to agree with Finman and his review. BMWs and MBs cannot justify their prices to me when I can get this vehicle for it''s price. Why the motoring press insists on leaving this vehicle out of the mix of luxury brands is a mystery to me. Mine doesn''t have the sport package but I will be looking at the 2002 4.2 to determine if I want to upgrade to the sport package or keep this. Similar Products Used: Mercedes, Nissan, BMW |

Strength:
Interior/Exterior styling. Interior material quality. Quiet at high speeds.
Weakness:
Numb steering feel. Awefull braking power. I didnt really notice how poorly the A6 slows itself when I took it for a test drive. And Ive tried 4 different cars from 2 dealerships. The BMW 5 series, Volvo S60/80, Mercedes C-Class, and Lexus GS series ALL have better braking ability. The crash test results for the 2001 A6 are AWEFULL. Dont believe me? Go here: http://www.highwaysafety.org/vehicle_ratings/ce/html/photo_comp_midlux.htm The 2001 A6 recieved the WORST crash test results of ANY car in the class. There are dozens of simlarly poor results all over the web. I feel really cheated and will terminate my lease in Sept. Living near Seattle WA I went looking for a new luxury car that would stand out a bit from all the BMW and Lexus cars that flood the streets. And at first the Audi A6 seemed to fit that bill perfectly. But now that I have owned the car for a bit over 8 months, im having second thoughts. Poor reliabity and dozens of electrical problems have kept my silver A6 at the dealership for way too long. And im now learning that the resale value of the Audi A6 is awefull. A lexus GS430 would have been a better choice for me - there are tons of them out there, but I guess its for a good reason. Audi have lots to learn from their Japanese competitors. Similar Products Used: 1998 Lexus GS 300, Ill probably get a GS430 or Mercedes C-Class when my Audi A6 lease is over in Sept. |

Perforamnce, handling, Bose system, interior lighting outrageous in Red, roominess, Magical interdimensional trunk( from the outside it doesn't look as big as it is, vewwy, vewwy quiet... heh, heh, heh.
Weakness:
Could be a little bit better in gas milage, but I just got it, and it's boound to improve. A combination of luxury, power & handling. WOW!!! I never thought I would find a car that was both comfortable & sporty at the same time. All the power in the world with an incredibly quiet cabin. Amenities enough for anyone plus a really superb interior( after all, that's where one is mostly looking at it, from the inside ). I do, however, recommend upgrading the stock Conti's with some Michelin MXV4+ rubber. Same size, but much better performance. When those wear down, I'll probably go with 225/50's V rated, just to upgrade handling a schooch. All in all an INCERDIBLE value in this price range. Similar Products Used: Drove BMW 3&5, Acura 3.2tl-S, found the A6 to be a much better value/performer in the range. |

Strength:
Georgeous interior, SPORT mode on 2.7T lowers suspension and 17" wheels look VERY cool, built like a vault, PERFECT blend of power-luxury-sport-size. 4 wheel drive, great warranty, Lots of Speed avaialable at LOW RPM and I personally think the car will never go "stale" as far as looks go.
Weakness:
Audi brakes give off a lot of carbon dust. Cold start hesitation, could have better gas mileage Be very careful about the A6. All models are of the highest quality and I personally think they are great looking cars inside and out but.. ALL A6 MODELS HAVE VERY DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES! I have owned the 2.8 Quattro for 30 months. GREAT car- 100% trouble free for 50,000 miles (which is the warranty) but was SLOW. The guy who said hauling kids and stuff is right. from 0-40 it is a dog in my opinion. NOT worht the 35K they are asking for them. When 4 cylinder Camrys are just as fast, Audi has a problem. From 40-80, in typical German fashion, the 2.8 is very fast- but we do not drive the autobahn here. I looked at other brands for my new car- BMW nice but 3 series too cramped and 5 series too expensive (540i very nice but 55K is pricey) also I do not like the center consoles of the 3 and 5 series- much too wide and cuts into the knee room. SAAB-NO, Lexus GS300/400 looking a little old, need refreshing soon.GS400 is also 50K+. Volvo-nope nice cars but their style is not mine. For that much money I am driving Japanese or German. Did not even consider E series Merc-too expensive for the fast models and I dont like the fidgety interiors. So back to Audi. Took a test drive of the 2.7T SPORT model (emphasis on the SPORTS package) and I found the car that I thought the 2.8 was going to be. VERY fast for a 3800 lb. car, not as much body roll as the 2.8 in cornering, SPORTS seats ARE FANTASTIC and the car looks completely different with 17" wheels and lowered suspension. ALso cant beat one CD in front and 6 in the trunk. Bose sound system is good, but Bose is over rated as an audio manufacturer (that subject for another day). This car is NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENT than the 2.8. Almost bought the 4.2 model, with it's wider fender flares and "stubbier" more compact nose, it looks even better than the 2.7T sport. I think that some will pay the $5-7k more just for the looks- I could not afford that. |

Strength:
The A6 Avant is one of the best looking wagons out in the market right now. Exceptionally clean styling, roomy interior, very good ergonomics, and the benefit of Quattro. The interior feels airey and roomier than a 528i sport wagon. The rear seats are particularly spacious. The car is luxurious and smooth. I'm not sure how it compares to a Mercedes E320 4-matic, but that wagon costs $55k +. Fit and finish on the Audi seems good, although I was surprised at some of the cheap accesories attached to the car.
Weakness:
For a 200HP car with 207 pd feet of torque, the car felt disappointing off the line in acceleration. The quattro adds some weight in the equation, but the car feels far more sluggish than a 528i wagon. Part of the problem can be the sluggish tiptronic transmission which I feel is not as efficient as BMW's. The car definitely rides a little soft, and steering feels loose and vague. Audi needs to add another 25 HP to this car, or either that, change the gear ratios so it can pick up better on the highway ramp. I wish there were more choices available for the A6 Avant. Audi should offer a wider variety of options, like a sports package with bigger wheels the way BMW does, or maybe even offer the V8 Avant also. Fit and finish on the Audi is good, although I was rather surprised at some of the cheap accesories on the car. The cruise control system is more efficient on a $19k Accord. The windshield wipers are a joke on this car and unacceptable for a car of this class. I also found the trip computer rather jurassic, offering limited features, and not that accurate readings. The fuel gauge on our car has not worked since the 2nd month and still not fixed. Audi has a recall on this item, but parts are scarce, and still could not get a dealer appointment to get this fixed. The Audi A6 Avant offers true European style and luxury. Quite an impressive offering for a staion wagon. If you want a true AWD sport wagon with luxury this car is for you. The BMW 528i Wagon, although sportier and more luxurious just doesn't compare in foul weather, plus it feels more cramped. The E320 4-matic wagon, may be a better match, I don't know, but even the 4-matic is really based on a rear wheel drive platform unlike Audi which is truly all wheel Drive. The Volvo cross country or AWD V70 models just doesn't compare in refinement, and driving experience to the Audi. For the price and considering dealers are willing to bargain, I think the A6 Avant is a good value. Similar Products Used: 1993 BMW 525ia. After 7 years of ownership, I like this car better than the Audi. My BMW is a better driving car than the Audi. |

Audi A6 2.8 Tiptronic
Strength:
Price, performance, build quality, equipment, fuel consumption
Weakness:
Tiptronic transmission is relatively slow. It´s extremely classy, the build quality is so much better than the american junk. The car has a lot of power and tops out at 240 kph (150 mph). The transmission isn´t exactly the fastest, but that´s what you got to accept when buying an automatic gearbox. The interior is spacious enough, but the ceiling seems lower than in my Audi 100 , the one i had before this car. The price is good and the equipment is also very good. And it only consumes 11 litres per 100 kilometres. Similar Products Used: Audi 100 2.8 |

A6 2.8Q
Strength:
Styling, Quattro (of course :), Handling, more space than the A4
Weakness:
Underpowered - Look into the PES supercharger if you have the 2.8 I love the car. Its build quality, styling and overall engineering are a testimant to its German designers. Had the fuel sender unit recall done (for the second time on this vehicles lifespan) which AOA picked up. Good idea to get some larger than stock wheels and tires, and sway bar. Stereo is underpowered during heavy bass. Similar Products Used: 88 Audi 90Q - obviously a vast difference, but the 90Q still held corners almost as well. |
