Model Reviewed: Audi A6 Avant Wagon

Strength:

Great comfort/convenience items (mem seats/mirrors, auto dim mirrors that work, too many others to list). Excellent ride. Very good handling (excellent for a wagon).

Weakness:

Needs more power, although with 5 speed Tiptronic transmission it's adequate, especially for my wife.

Bought this when it was a brand new model in high demand with short supply, ordered it and had to wait 4 months. Consequently paid near sticker($1000 off, $40,000+).

This is a great car overall. With 50 more horses it would be awsome. It has every comfort/convenience feature you could ever dream up. It's ride is among the best I have ever experienced, easily as good as any BMW or Mercedes and definitely better than a Volvo. It handles great and the braking is superb. The Quattro all-time all wheel drive is excellent (probably the best all wheel system in the world).

It's an expensive car at $40,000+ but you will pay more for a BMW (no 4 wheel) and a lot more for a Mercedes wagon with 4 wheel (probably $55,000+). The Volvo is a little less but doesn't drive nearly as good. If you need more cargo space then the Volvo may be a better choice, it will hold a lot more stuff.

Audi got a bad rap in years past. Their current line-up of cars are strong competitors for BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo. The build quality appears to be excellent, only time will tell, but after 12,000 miles it's just as tight and quiet as the day we drove it away from the dealer and we have not had any unscheduled maintenance.

I gave it only 4 stars on value because at this price I expect a little more power. Excellent car overall, glad we bought it!

Strength:

Looks awesome, excellent interior style, great BOSE stereo
excellent warranty, 4WD, trouble free.

Weakness:

I CAN'T GET NO POWER SIR!

Paid 35k a year ago. I want to LOVE this car, but I only like it a lot becasue 200HP simply is not enolugh for the price paid. If it had 225-250, this would be the most perfect luxury car on the road. I know that you can get the Bi-Turbo now and I am sure that it is the car I am looking ofr BUT... it is 40k (that may not be a big deal to some)and it is turbo meaning 5000 mile service intervals instead of 7500 for normally aspirated. I love EVERYTHING about this car but it doe snot have enough low end grunt- the tiptronic helps, but is not the answer. In typical German fashion - it goes from 40-80 MHP VERY FAST. But from 0-40 it is simply not good enough for 35k.

One more note- I got mine with the "warm weather package" That has a solar powered sunroof that powers the AC fan when the car is parked if the ambient temp gets too high- it DOES WORK! And a motorized screen can be raised to cover the back windshield to keep the sun out, very cool (all puns intended)and worth the money.

To some the power is not a big thing- if not, buy this car. The style and overall competance of the car is truly stunning.

Strength:

Good visibility, comfort plus, excellent room, handling and driving is enjoyable. Goodies galore.

Weakness:

Overpriced and the door armrest does not go back far enough to catch my elbow in my driving position.

Better to wait and buy a 2 year old model and let someone else take the depreciation. I would get one of these used rather than a Passat or Maxima new at the same price.

Model Reviewed: A6 2.7T

Strength:

Best Luxury car that performs well.
Dealer is close with good reputation.
Great interior.

Weakness:

Poor head room, particularly in the back.
Floats on rails instead of driving on rails.
Despite the specs, the 5 series has better rear leg room.

I test drove both the Audi A6 2.7T with automatic and manual transmission and the BMW 525, and 530 with and without stick and sport transmission. I ordered a 530 with stick and sport package.

The Audi is a great luxury car that performs well and the BMW is a great performance car that is luxurious. The BMW says drive me and the Audi says ride me. Personal preference, I opted for the 530 with sport package and manual transmission.

However, if you are considering a non sport 530 with an automatic, take a hard look at the 2.7T. Since only 2 in 15 530s come with a manual and even fewer with the sport suspension, that means most BMW buyers would be better served by the 2.7T. (IMO)

Note, the 2.7T 6 speed is a pain, and requires constant shifting. Get the automatic for the Audi. If you want the sport suspension, get a BMW. If you get an E-class Benz, you wasted your money.

Strength:

The product. The car is very nice. Very comfortable. Very fast (faster than is really necessary -- I'd say that 200 horses are plenty for accelerating onto freewyas and the like). Nice amenities.

Weakness:

There were some problems with both the car and the service. First off, the fiberglass bumper is weak and too low. So it doesn't clear those cement park lot bumpers that are everywhere. And should a vehicle back into the front bumper as most drivers are prone to do, it can show no visible damage but severe structural failure to the fiberglass. Hello Audi -- do you really drive these in the real world??? Worst of all is the local dealer. For example, I bought the Audi for AWD. I bought it in Canada. But guess what? I got summer tires!!! It never occurred to me to look! The dealer is also supposed to include regular maintance including oil changes. But it's just about impossible to get the free service -- they never answer the phone in service -- it's taken an average of six calls to get one returned -- and then they have no space available or loaners! For the money I expect better service. Seems to me this is a 30,000 value. If they include stellar service it's worth the selling price. If not, forget it. Beware -- if, at the end of my lease, Audi gives me ANY grief, I'm getting a big truck with huge tree stumps for bumpers and aiming at wimpy Audis. If they don't I'm opting for a new Subaru outback -- a much better value, probably safer, and the bumpers clear the parking lot bumpers.

I have the 2.7T. The car itself is nice. Not really a good value, though. I have had some very real problems that should not have occured, especially if Audi and the dealer were really up to the Audi reputation.

Well, the Audi has more power than the Datsun did, is more dependable than the MG, has more space than the first four, but doesn't have the perfomance in the snow of the Subaru and many more mistakes than the Japanese made. Finally my dealer doesn't seem to understand that the level of service for a forty thousand dollar vehicle should be better than awful. Tip: performance in the snow has much more to do with tires than the number of wheels that are being driven.

Model Reviewed: Audi A6 Quattro

Strength:

Great to drive, great to ride in, all wheel drive, value for money compared to competitors.

Weakness:

Gas gauge recall and servicing ad infinitum; cup holders, how do they expect passengers to see the clock?

We've had a 1999 A6 Quattro for over two years now, and love the car. We have had no driveability problems whatsoever. We have had a series of inconvenience service needs - particularly with the gas gauge (both repairs - all under warranty, and recalls) and with the power windows. We have never run out of gas nor spent a dime on the gas gauge problem, but we've probably been back to the dealer at least six times on the problem.
The car is great to ride in, but the interior seems more designed to European than American tastes, as might be expected. The cup holders are just plain cheap - reminds of Subarus I've rented. If Audi has not yet changed to the type of cup holders that the 2001.5 Passat has, they should. The other interior complaint is probably a personal style preference - while driving in rush hour traffic, I would find a digital clock easier to glance at. It would also be nice to have an in dash rather than in trunk CD changer.
When we bought the 1999, the 2.8 6 cyl engine was the only engine choice. Our other car has an 8 cylinder engine, and by comparison the 6 feels a bit underpowered, particularly in quick acceleration. It's certainly adequate and the highway gas mileage often exceeds the EPA rating, but if you crave powerful engines, be sure to test drive all engine choices on the A6 before buying.

Strength:

Plush interior, Quattro System, Audi quality , 4yrs/50000m warranty for everything except tires. Very competitive pricing, 39 month/15000 miles P.A. lease with $0 down and a payment under $500 a month, you just cant beat that for a car of this quality.

Weakness:

Bose- dissapointing sound on low end, but kicks in when you crank vol.
Exterior-Still not in love with the rear styling but I can live with it.
Havent had the car long enough yet to really get to know it but so far so good.

Great lease deals on the A6 during June, with 2.5% financing it is hard to go wrong. I took the 2.8 Quattro for a test drive and found that it had plenty of power for me(acceptable oomph for merging onto highway and plenty of passing power). IMO the extra 6k for the 2.7T is not worth it, but then again I am not hauling around 3 kids and a trunk full of stuff either or flooring it off the traffic lights!!!. What really sold me on this car was the luxury interior. One of the best of any price car on the market today. I opted for the celebration package,(sunroof and leather seats), cold weather package and the Bose stero. The quattro is a no-brainer for driving in the North-East.

BMW 325xi-very dissapointed when I test drove it, plain jane interior, lack of oomph, not as smooth a transmission as the Audi's, add a few options and the price gets really up there. Just bad value for the money.
Audi A4 2.8 Quattro-really liked this car had everything, blew the BMW 325xi away in my mind. Would probably have bought this except for a little more you can have a much bigger "luxury" car.

Too many service problems. First it was the fuel sending units. I have been through two recalls. Then it was the tie rods which ruined one of my front tires. Next it was the temperature gauge sending unit. Then the windows began to squeek. After that my CD light became dim.

Too expensive for what you get.

Strength:

Nice interior, Cool sun roof, good steering wheel, nice speeds, adaptive transmission, comfortable seats, nice paint, nice interior dash board lights.

Weakness:

Big time problem with what I think is the transmission (Yet to be fixed), Can't see well while backing up, bit cramped space for tall people, a bit too much gas consumption, too much brake dust, cheesy trunk (dosent open well)

My overall experince with this car as been good. Though I have had some problems that all still trying to be worked out. I car handles very nicely which I like. Some problems I have noticed are that you can't really see behind you when backing up, its fairly tuff to do so. The front passanger side is fairly small for tall people. The left leg is constantly hitting against the side.

Strength:

Build quality. Excellent engine.

Weakness:

Overboosted steering

I agree totally with the previous writer who describes different personalities with different A6 configurations. I owned a 01 S4 prior to this--was wrecked in an accident. I purchased the A6 as a replacement for more room.

My A6 has the APR Stage I dealer installed chip--307hp and 366 ft lb torque--absolutely dizzying speed. The car came with the new sport package consisting of 17 inch rims, sport seats, stiffer suspension, 225/40 ZR 17 tires.

With the above package, the vehicle is comprable to the S4 in every category except steering. The A6 steering is a bit overboosted. In every other category the A6 is superior to the S4--more luxurious, more room, more features, better ride.

Similar Products Used:

S4 (excellent but small vehicle), Boxter S( totally different product and feel but definitely not as quick feeling or luxurious as my current A6--not to mention unable to haul 4 people comfortably), BMW 325 (no comparison), Mercedes S class (luxury cruiser with no sporting intent)
