Audi A4 (2010 and older) Luxury

Audi A4 (2010 and older) Luxury

DESCRIPTION

The Audi A4 has a planted, sportier stance and holds the road with a new sense of confidence and enthusiasm. Its new underpinnings are shared with the S5 and A5 coupes. Thanks to the liberal use of ultra-high-strength steel, the body weighs 10 percent less than last year's, yet is more rigid.

The 2.0 T is equipped with a new 2.0-liter, I4, 211-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 21-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 23-mpg. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The 3.2 quattro with Tiptronic is equipped with a new 3.2-liter, V6, 265-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 20-mpg. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

Strength:

Styling, it's not flashy but it looks good. AWD, this makes this car the best handling car I have ever driven, awsome on the snow. The free maintenance for 50,000 miles, this has come in handy.

Weakness:

Cup holders, on the first day the cup slipped out of the holder and spilled on the passengers seat. The remote control for the alarm has very poor range. Been having problems with the drivers seat, thumping noise and broken springs in seat. I'm not a heavy person 165lbs, 5' 11". Front suspension problems, there is a known problem with the control arms on the front suspension with heavy creaking and rasping noises. At high speeds there is too much road and tire noise, I hope to fix this by changing brand of tires. Standard headlights are very weak. Skeaky breaks.

There are many minor problems/annoyances with this car that Audi could easily fix and they have fixed some in the newer models. But some like the cup holders are still waiting to be fixed. Fun to drive and great handling but all the little things make it annoying to own. I expected better things from a German car. Next time Volvo or Saab.

1988 Mazda MX6, it too had it's problems. The muffler had to be repaired every 20,000 miles and a lot of over steering. But those are the only two things I have to complain about.

Strength:

Fun to drive in the snow. You can do controlled powerslides in the snow with a little gas. Bose sound system with cd changer is very good. Goes real loud, don't think anyone would ever need to add stereo equipment if they got the premium sound.

Weakness:

I wanted to post this review because no one else complained about this: When it's cold out (below ~ 35 degrees F) and the little snow flake comes on the climate control window, you cannot get recirculated air. This means if you are behind a stinky truck you can either breath in nasty fumes, or freeze.
Also, if you enjoy doing your own car work you won't after working on this car. I changed my alternator, and besides having to pay the dealer $570 for one (no one carries them in stock yet) it was a major pain trying to remove it from the well designed and cramped engine compartment.
The 2.8 with the automatic lack the power to get moving from a start in a hurry.

If I buy another Audi, it'll be the S4. The twin turbo incarnation of the A4.

Strength:

Quattro system is the best. Power has improved. Awesome handling. Excellent 5 speed manual transmission. Fit and finish is unequaled by even higher priced automobiles.

Weakness:

None, this is the best vehicle I have ever purchased.

I have always owned fourwheel drive trucks and/or Jeeps. In December I took delivery of a 2001 Jeep wrangler Sport. However, it turned out to be a horrible winter handling vehicle. Out of curiousity I went and test drove the A4 one week ago and I drove it off the lot the next day. It handles the snow incredibly! Comppared to higher priced cars, it is a very good buy.

Similar Products Used:

Tested BMW 323i and Lexus IS300. While these cars had an edge on acceleration, the A4 was more refined, handled better, and an allround better value.

Model Reviewed: A4 1.8t Quattro

Strength:

Elegent, understated styling. No gimmicky, fadish touches. Safty.. has air bags all around. The Quattro AWD is wonderful! Cornering is a breeze, no over or understeer. Solid, well built in and out. I paid extra and got the sports handling package and am damn glad I did. Body roll is near zero even at the limit. Tight turning radius. Perfect gauges, near perfect controls. Xenon lights! When the Turbo kicks in, hang on boys and girls! Sports car like handling, MB like interior, better than SUV bad weather control, exclusiveness and style... what more can you ask for?

Weakness:

A few minor ones:
- Wath out.. don't put any coins in the center console. If you lift the console up, the coins will jam in the hinge's and are a royal pain in the bottoks to remove (the lid wont shut when a coin is in there).
- No automatic seats... however, the manual controls are cool.
- Some interor trim is metal. Looks nice, but a careless wife with a diamond ring will scratch it up (and just try to get her to remove the ring... HA!)
- More low end tourque would be nice., but once that turbo kicks in, hang on boys and girls!
- Cupholder (yah.. me too..). It's just above the stereo and will drip down onto the controls. Keep some napkins handy.
- Still havn't figured out the alarm (maybe I should read the manual?)
- It's not a S4 (but then again, it's $10k cheaper too)
- Seats a bit to hard for some, but I like em!
- Back seat cramped for adults

A great car for a fair price. I was considering a BMW 323, Contour SVT, Lincoln LS, or a Dodge what-cha-macallit. I narrowed it down to the BMW and Audi. Sure, beemers may have more ooomph, but they are more expensive and it seems everyone and thier grandma has one, and I prefer the all wheel drive over the BMW's rear wheel drive hands down.
I drive this car on twistie mountain roads almost daily and the more I do the more I appreciate this car, specially in the rain. Love to pass up SUV's which have spun out with a smile!

Model Reviewed: 1.8T quattro

Strength:

The level of refinement is impressive. The phenomenal steering feel combined with quattro and ABS inspire confidence in any kind of weather. The attention to small details both inside and out, continues to impress, even after nearly a year of ownership. 3 years of paid maintenance makes this car easy to own.

Weakness:

The base stereo speakers and base seats are mildly disappointing. The 4 cylinder engine is just a little weak for a car of this weight, although the car can be easily modified, and newer models already have more power. The triptronic transmision is a good comprimise between a fully automatic and a manual, but can be quirky sometimes. The warranty could be longer.

My wife and I both fell in love with this car when we first saw it at the auto show. (99.5 1.8T Quattro) The car has plenty of room, yet drives like a much smaller car. The steering feel is excellent. Combined with quattro and ABS, the car inspires confidence with it's handling in any weather conditions. The interior is a little bit plain but very functional, and the quality of the parts and construction are to the highest standards. This car tells you it's put together well every time you look at it, touch it, and drive it. This is simply a great car for the money.

Many people complain about the size of the back seats. Though they are a little small for a car in this class, one shouldn't confuse them with the vestigal seats found in the back of many compact cars and pickup trucks. I've carried 4 medium size people in this car for an hour at a time in perfect comfort. I can attest to this because I have sat back there myself. Six footers may not be able to stretch out for marathon road trips, but they would be very comfortable on a trip accross town to your favorite restaraunt.

My only complaints with the car are relatively minor. The base stereo system is not very impressive. Even with 8 speakers, the system sounds weak and washed out. I'm not an audiophile, but the poor sound quality is plainly obvious. The base seats are somewhat flat and unsupportive, and don't offer enough adjustments. When you are going through the options list, you should strongly consider getting the upgraded seats and stereo system. I guess I just expected a little more from the base options from a car in this catagory.

My only other complaint is with the triptronic system. While it is probably the best auto-manual system available on any car, it's not as responsive as a manual and it's behavior can be a little quirky. Even in manual mode, flooring the accelerator can still cause a downshift, sending the tachometer deep into the red. In spite of that, it's still much better than not having the option to shift yourself. If you opt for triptronic, be sure to get the sports steering wheel with the shift buttons on it. They are wonderful.

Look around for a good dealership when you buy an Audi. This is not like buying a Lexus or a Saturn. The quality of dealerships varies greatly. Some will give you a great deal and service the minute you walk in. Others will put you through the ringer just to get a test drive and then offer to let you pay MSRP on the car. It pays to look at more than one dealership if you are not getting the price and service that you want.

My only other complaint is with Audi of America. My car broke down on the way home from the dealership. (After a little research, I realized that this is not as uncommon a problem as you would think, and not just pertaining to Audi.) When I called Audi of America, they politely took my call and offered to look into it. Afterwards they neglected to ever call me back and refused to take my follow up calls. Luckily, the dealership I found was able to set everything right, but the way I was treated by the parent company was still disconcerting. It is a testament to the quality of this car (not a single problem since then) and the dealership that I still recommend this car as highly as I do.

Exterior styling is simply beautiful/you pick interior combinations/very quite. Fit and finish are the best I've seen in any vehicle, much better than BMW...this car is built like a tank, very solid/quattro keeps you on the road/sport package is a must/red illumination at night looks too cool/ very safe car, seats are very very comfortable.

Weakness:

More low end torque on the 2.8 engine/ cup holders/

I bought my '99 A4 at invoice last year. Everyone who enters my A4 admires the beautiful sporty interior (ecru/Blk interior).
The 1.8T does not seem like a 4-banger, and the V6 is silky.
I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a sporty feel with a touch of german luxury. I waited almost 2 years to get my hands on mine, worth every penny.
Gotta go drive now......

Very quiet ride, excellent stock stereo, great powertrain and wonderful fit and finish. I had a Contour SVT and a 325iC before this and neither can compare to the refinement and beauty of this car. It handles better than the SVT (which by the way is saying a lot) and draws more looks than the Bimmer.

I would like full blown leather insted of "leatherette", but that is my only complaint

$30,100 fully loaded with manual trans
